There were a few things that truly scared Alpha, and they could be counted on one hand. It would come as a shock to a lot of people that the feminine-looking boy who looked like he couldn’t hit a fly would have so little fear.

Walking down the corridors towards class in the morning, Alpha couldn’t help but shiver.

"Probably the approaching winter..."

Alpha whispered, but he wasn’t so sure himself. He had experienced far too much to tell the difference between natural chill and one that felt... stalking.

Living with Silas meant experiencing a whole lot of unnatural things. Pink pillars of light visible across the world, systems that punished you for skipping meditation, an orc queen who used five-ton benches as warm-up equipment, and a billionaire housemate who somehow managed to attract monsters, beautiful women, psychopaths, and national-level incidents every other Tuesday.

After living through all that, one developed instincts, and right now, those instincts were screaming.

He slowed his pace and casually looked over his shoulder. All he saw were students, lots of students, some chatting, some running because they were late, and one guy eating instant noodles while walking. Nothing unusual.

"I’m imagining things. I hope so..."

He continued walking. Three seconds later, the feeling returned stronger. It felt like someone was staring directly into the back of his skull.

He spun around, but still found nothing.

"Nope. I’m not dying today."

His elegant walking pace immediately transformed into a brisk speed-walk. Not running. Running attracted attention. Speed-walking was tactical. Completely different. Yep.

"I refuse to become today’s headline."

’Beautiful Student Found Dead After Ignoring Survival Instincts.’

"No thank you."

His pace increased again. A few students looked at him strangely as he marched through the hallway with the determination of someone escaping taxes. The feeling didn’t disappear.

If anything, it became worse.

"What the hell?"

He rounded a corner...

THUD.

"Oof."

He bounced backward after colliding with someone.

"Sorry."

A familiar white head looked up.

"Alpha."

It was Chloe.

She wore her usual immaculate uniform, every button perfectly fastened. Her long white hair flowed neatly behind her, while those blue eyes remained as calm as an undisturbed lake. Ever since her enlightenment, she had changed.

Not physically, at least, not much. It was her aura. Before, she had been shy, gentle, and soft-spoken. Then after the awakening, she became a bit cold, but still gentle.

Now, she was still gentle and kind, but there was a quiet coldness surrounding her. It was not arrogance or pride, simply... distance.

She spoke less and smiled less. Most conversations with her earned nothing more than a small nod. Only around Silas did she still brighten noticeably. Around Anna, Gromda, her parents, little brother, and occasionally Raymond, she relaxed.

Everyone else received Winter. Alpha leaned closer.

"I think someone is stalking me."

"Mm." She nodded once, then continued walking.

"That’s it?"

"Sit down."

"You’re not concerned?"

"No."

"Shouldn’t you ask questions?"

"You’ll answer if necessary."

"That’s annoyingly reasonable."

They entered the classroom. As expected, Silas hadn’t arrived yet. Maybe he overslept, or got lost inside the estate again, or Gromda kidnapped him for morning training, which everyone knew what it actually meant.

All three were equally likely.

Alpha dropped into his seat, and Chloe sat beside him, leaving one seat in the middle for Silas. He had requested that Chloe and Alpha be in his class, and the academy had accepted it without as much as a sneeze.

Without saying another word, she calmly pulled out her phone and launched a game. Tiny cartoon monsters immediately began exploding across the screen.

"..." Alpha stared at her in shock.

"You’re playing games?"

"Mm."

"I just told you someone might be stalking me."

"Mm."

"..."

"Do you care?"

"I do."

"Then?"

Without taking her eyes off the game, Chloe answered quietly.

"If they attack..." A boss monster exploded. "I’ll freeze them."

"Fair enough."

That was actually reassuring. A little. Alpha reached into his bag and pulled out a thick sketchbook. Drawing had always helped him relax. Whenever life became chaotic, he sketched. People, landscapes, weapons, and recently, even Silas, mostly because the idiot made bizarre expressions every five minutes.

He flipped to a blank page and took a graphite pencil and started drawing... first line, second line... His pencil stopped, while the temperature dropped.

He frowned.

"Chloe."

"Mm?"

"Is this you?"

She looked up from her game.

"No."

"You’re sure?"

"Positive."

"That’s worse."

Because if it wasn’t Chloe, then who? The air suddenly felt heavier, not physically, but mentally, as if invisible eyes had settled upon him and were watching, studying, and evaluating.

Alpha slowly lifted his head, but saw nothing. Students chatted normally. Someone laughed loudly near the windows. A teacher walked past the open classroom door.

Everything looked normal. His pencil trembled.

"Definitely not normal."

The sensation intensified, and this time, it wasn’t only cold. There was pressure, like being targeted, like standing before a predator patiently deciding whether to pounce. Alpha swallowed.

"Okay.... I officially dislike today."

He casually looked toward Chloe again. She was still playing.

"You’re seriously playing games?"

"Final boss."

"..."

"Priorities."

"..."

He couldn’t even argue with that. Then, his instincts exploded. Every hair on his body stood upright. Someone was looking directly at him specifically.

Slowly... very slowly, Alpha turned his head toward the classroom windows. Sunlight streamed through the glass, students walked outside, trees swayed gently, but there was still nothing.

Then, for the briefest fraction of a second, he saw it, a figure standing on the rooftop of another academy building.

Far away. Too far for ordinary eyesight, black dreadlocked hair dancing in the wind, golden eyes, and those eyes were looking directly at him.

The figure raised a hand and disappeared from the rooftop edge. Alpha blinked. He immediately closed his sketchbook.

"I’m going home."

Without looking away from her game, Chloe spoke.

"Class hasn’t started."

"I don’t care."

"Sit."

"I value my life."

"Sit."

Alpha sat. "Fine."

He folded his arms.

"I’m only staying because you’re here."

"Mm."

"Promise you’ll freeze whoever tries to kill me."

"Mm."

"Why do I feel like that wasn’t a promise?"

Alicia breathed in and out, sweat covering her brows.

"He saw me... he saw me... ARRRGH!"
