Surprisingly, Charlotta did not complain or resist like a child her age normally might. She simply allowed Alex to take Mia from her without saying anything.

Alex wondered if Charlotta was simply someone who had matured early, or if she already understood that she should not trouble others during the apocalypse. Either way, seeing such a young child behave like that made him sigh inwardly.

He pushed the thought aside and reminded himself that he was about to learn something new about magic. That thought was enough to lift his mood slightly as he carried Mia toward the rooftop.

An Ascendant from Stefan’s faction was standing guard near the rooftop door. The door itself was locked, and the moment the man noticed Alex approaching, he immediately straightened his posture and saluted.

"Hello, sir!"

Alex nodded. He did not bother asking why the man was saluting him and instead pointed toward the locked door.

"Why is the rooftop locked? Are you worried about flying monsters?" Alex asked.

"Yes. Stefan was worried that some flying monsters might try to enter through the rooftop, so we locked it," the Ascendant answered.

"Alright, then open it. I’ll keep an eye on things while I’m up there," Alex said.

The man hesitated for a moment before unlocking the door. Alex stepped through and found himself on the rooftop of the six-story building.

A cool breeze passed over him as he looked around. From this height, Alex could see the surrounding buildings, streets, and several distant areas that had previously been hidden from view by the lower structures. He took a deep breath. The air was crip and refreshing. The rooftop itself was mostly empty, with only a few scattered pieces of equipment and concrete structures breaking up the open space.

This was a good place to keep watch.

If the leader of the Wild Orcs sent a group if Wild Orcs toward them, Alex would have a much better chance of noticing them from here. He could also attack from a distance before they reached the building.

Alex closed the rooftop door behind him and finally let Mia down.

"I’ll talk to you later," he said.

The cat looked at him but did not seem particularly interested in his promise.

Alex then opened his Status Screen and retrieved the reward he had received from completing the Tutorial Quest. The map appeared directly at his feet. It was not stored inside his Inventory. Rewards from Tutorial Quests were stored in Status Screen.

He bent down and picked it up. The moment the map opened the map and looked at it, his eyes constricted. Alex pushed the Battle Instinct Spell into overdrive. He needed his emotions under control.

Mia seemed to realize that Alex was suddenly using a large amount of mana. The cat looked up at him and let out a worried meow, but Alex could not spare any attention for her right now.

His eyes were fixed on the map.

It was a map of San Francisco, and two crosses had been marked on it. One was red, representing his current location, while the blue cross was located directly at his sister’s high school.

Alex stared at the blue cross for several seconds. The map reminded him of the one his group had received from Hell Difficulty, where a blue cross had also marked a specific location, although they had not found out yet whether it indicated a treasure, a powerful monster, or something else entirely.

Alex increased the output of his Battle Instinct Spell even further. He knew he was entering a dangerous state where pushing the spell too far could potentially damage his brain, but he needed to remain calm because allowing his emotions to overwhelm him would only make his decisions worse.

With absolute calmness, Alex took out his phone from his Inventory. He checked his messages and call logs one more time, but there were no replies or missed calls from his parents or sister, and none of them had even seen the messages he had sent.

His message to his sister had been delivered sometime ago, but she still had not opened it. Alex stared at the screen for a moment before putting the phone away and looking at the map again.

He hoped the blue cross represented some powerful item or treasure. However, the fact that a map with similar markings had appeared in Hell Difficulty made him suspect that it could instead indicate the location of a powerful monster, perhaps one that was guarding a treasure or an important resource point.

If there really was a powerful monster at his sister’s high school, then—

Alex stopped the thought before it could develop any further. He forced himself to remain calm and reminded himself, ’Don’t think about negative outcomes when they haven’t been proven yet. Focus on what you what you can do.’

He took a deep breath and stored both the map and his phone in his Inventory. After finding a suitable place to sit, Alex settled down and prepared himself for training. He needed to become stronger.

Mia seemed to understand his mood. The cat rubbed herself against his leg before settling down near him, almost as if she were trying to comfort him.

"Thank you," Alex said.

He reached down and gently rubbed her head. Mia closed her eyes for a moment before Alex turned his attention back toward his training.

He first attempted the Mana Circuit Spell. Alex created a Mana Cable and began using it to form a rune, deciding to recreate the Kinetic Element Rune he remembered from Josepha’s Wand in Hell Difficulty.

Fortunately, remembering the rune was not difficult. With the Battle Instinct Spell constantly improving his mental abilities, his memory was working better than usual, allowing him to recall the structure with remarkable accuracy.

Soon, the rune was completed.

Alex immediately knew that something was missing. The Kinetic Element Rune required Kinetic Essence before it could actually function, but that was not what he was trying to accomplish right now.

His goal was to use Will to reinforce the rune and make it maintain its shape even after he stopped actively controlling the mana. According to Ben, Will came from the soul, and using it required both a strong soul and intense concentration.
