SSS Awakening: I am the First Legendary Mage
Chapter 160: Dance With DeathEve became alert instantly.
"I will search for the cat with my skill," she said as she stood up and left the room with the man. Noah watched them go with furrowed brows.
He was concerned as well. After so many deaths and so much destruction, people had become attached to whatever they still had left, even if it was something as simple as a pet. Roan was the perfect example of that, because he was fighting the Wild Orcs to save the servants living in his family’s main mansion, people he had rarely even met.
For Alex, who had been carrying the cat through these monster-ridden streets, the animal was clearly precious to him. Noah could understand that feeling, especially now that almost everything familiar had been taken away from them.
A sigh escaped his lips as he thought of Roan and Alex.
’I hope they can return alive,’ he prayed silently.
However, even Noah knew that if Roan and Alex encountered five or six Wild Orcs at once, then escaping might become impossible, let alone fighting and winning. Despite knowing that, he hoped they would return alive.
...
Alex dashed forward to meet the Wild Orcs head-on. He counted four coming from the front, two from behind, and another two approaching from the right, leaving him with very little room to move once they closed in.
He poured an insane amount of mana into his lungs and throat, forcing his voice to carry across the battlefield despite the chaos around him. "Roan, pay attention. I now know how to find the debuff caster!"
Alex launched the three Fire Bullets he had created at the Wild Orc rushing toward him from the front. The bullets punched through the monster’s knee, and Alex deliberately avoided aiming for its head because the monsters might be able to dodge if they were being strengthened—buffed—by the hidden caster.
The Wild Orc began to fall. Alex stopped running in the next second, planting one foot in front of the other as he created Mana Threads beneath his feet and used them to anchor himself to the concrete road. Then he threw the sword in his hand like a javelin.
The momentum from his run transferred into the sword, and together with the power generated by the advanced Battle Instinct Spell, it zipped through the air and buried itself in the falling Wild Orc’s neck. It did not punch cleanly through the neck like the Fire Bullets, but it buried itself deep enough to make the monster choke on its blood.
Although the thrown sword did not have the same speed as the Fire Bullets and had already begun to lose its shape, Alex did not need to use as much concentration as Fire Bullet for it. Larger constructs were harder to keep stable, but since he only needed the sword for a quick throw, it was faster to use than Fire Bullet, which needed intense control.
Before even confirming that the fallen Wild Orc was dead, Alex rolled to the side. A traffic pole plunged into the road where he had been standing moments earlier, thrown by a Wild Orc from the back, and Alex immediately dashed into the nearby building.
The building began to collapse behind him as he ran, courtesy of the Wild Orc that reached him. He rapidly moved over the falling obstructions, but just as he was about to come out from the other side, another Wild Orc appeared there.
The six-floor behemoth’s legs were visible as it prepared to crouch. Alex jumped onto the window sill and pushed himself upward, shattering the concrete beneath his foot before sailing through the air.
He created a new Mana Sword and drove it into the Wild Orc’s neck as he reached it. The giant did not even see him coming, and it fell onto the building while Alex swung himself while holding the sword, and landed on top of its body.
Alex immediately strengthened his throat and lungs with mana before shouting across the battlefield. "The closer you are to the caster, the more you will feel that you are losing something! The caster’s ability’s strength is determined by how close you are to it!"
When Alex had been kicked into the building moments ago, and reached somewhere above twenty-five floors, he had likely moved farther away from the caster. At that moment, he had noticed that the rate at which he was losing Will had suddenly slowed down, but after returning to the ground, the rate had returned to normal.
That was how Alex deduced that the monster’s ability affect changed with range. The closer he was to the caster, the stronger the effect became.
"I will search for it! You distract the Wild Orcs!" Roan’s shout came from another street.
Alex turned toward the sound before answering, "Got it!"
Alex was better at fighting these Wild Orcs, so he would serve as a better distraction while Roan searched for the caster. He fired the three Fire Bullets he had prepared, and as expected, the Wild Orcs dodged them.
That was enough to attract their attention, though. Now, out of the six surviving Wild Orcs, five were running toward Alex.
He did not jump away from the corpse he was standing on. Instead, Alex watched the monsters carefully and noticed that they were not throwing anything at him, likely because he was standing on top of one of their fallen allies.
He filed that detail away just as the first Wild Orc finally reached him, its enormous hand shooting forward in an attempt to grab him.
Lightning element mana flooded Alex’s neurons, sharpening his reactions as he twisted his body out of the way. The monster’s fingers passed beside him, and Alex cut two of them away before the Wild Orc could react, then fired a Fire Bullet straight through its head as it roared in pain from lost fingers. The Wild Orc fell dead.
Alex noticed that the remaining four Wild Orcs did not immediately attack. Instead, they watched him carefully, as if they had finally realized that he was a threat and were trying to understand how dangerous he actually was.
Alex smiled faintly. If they were not willing to come to him, then he would go to them, so he crouched and jumped toward the nearest Wild Orc.
His leg muscles launched him through the air. While he was airborne, the Wild Orc quickly moved its hand and prepared to punch him, knowing that Alex would have limited ability to change direction while in the air.
Alex fired the three Fire Bullets. The Wild Orc immediately changed its movement, stopping its punch and twisting its head to avoid the bullet aimed at its skull, but the other two bullets punched cleanly through its knee and elbow while it was distracted.
The Wild Orc roared in pain and staggered. Alex continued sailing through the air, landed on the monster, and drove his Mana Sword into its skull as he slid to the side to stop his momentum. The blade tore through the skull, killing the Wild Orc.
