Eve was frowning, her heart filled with trepidation. They had searched thoroughly, yet they still could not find Alex’s cat anywhere, and the longer they failed to hear from the cat, the more uneasy she became. Her breathing grew ragged, and sweat slowly formed on her forehead.
Before Roan had found and rescued her, Eve had seen Ascendants doing terrible things to ordinary humans. Those people had been drunk on their newfound power, and she had learned that strength could easily make someone lose sight of what was right.
Alex was clearly strong, so what would happen if he became angry with her, and could even Roan stop him if things went wrong?
For a brief moment, Eve wished that Alex would die to the Wild Orcs he had gone to face. The thought disappeared almost immediately, and she was horrified that it had even entered her mind. Alex was fighting those monsters and risking his life to rescue people, yet she had been thinking about his death simply because she was afraid of what he might do.
"Eve! William! Come here!" Noah shouted from the other room.
Eve and the old man, William, looked at each other before quickly making their way back to the room where everyone had gathered.
They found the others standing around Noah, who had a bright smile on his face as he looked toward the doorway they had just entered through. Most of the people were looking at the table, or more specifically, at the phone lying on it, which probably belonged to Noah.
"Roan says they killed more than twenty Wild Orcs. He and Alex are fine, and they should reach Patrick High School soon!" Noah said with a beaming smile. He sounded so relieved that the tension in the room seemed to disappear almost immediately.
Eve felt a rush of relief when she heard the news. As she became aware of her own emotions, she realized that she was genuinely happy to hear that Alex was safe, and that realization made her happy as well. She was relieved to know that, despite her earlier fear, she had actually hoped for Alex to be safe.
At the same time, Eve was amazed by the number of Wild Orcs they had killed. She knew Roan’s strength because she had seen him fight before, and three Wild Orcs had already been around the limit of what he could handle by himself, although that number could increase if he had a proper plan and the circumstances were favorable.
Still, defeating more than twenty Wild Orcs before even thirty minutes had passed since they left was something else entirely. Eve did not need anyone to explain who had killed most of them, because she already knew the answer.
"Alex is really amazing," Noah muttered, his smile widening as he looked at the phone. The others could only nod in agreement, because after hearing what Alex and Roan had accomplished, they could not think of another way to describe it.
...
Alex looked at the evolution options.
[Fire Bullet Spell and Mana Bullet Spell can be fused for an evolution. Choose an evolution: Fire Piercer Spell, Fire Volley Spell, Fire-Mana Weaving Spell.]
Alex was surprised when he saw only three options. He had expected the fusion to produce more possibilities, especially since evolution choices seemed to be influenced by the way he used his spells. After thinking about it for a while, however, he came to a reasonable conclusion.
Fused spells were more complex and powerful than normal spells, so it made sense that the Talent would provide fewer evolution paths for them. Instead of offering a large number of variations, it was probably giving him a few options that represented the most suitable ways to develop the combined spell.
Fire Piercer Spell was clearly a penetration-type attack. Alex thought about how it might work and quickly came up with a possible use for it. If the spell allowed the fire projectile to penetrate an enemy and then stop its momentum inside the body before exploding, it could cause an enormous amount of damage.
Alex could already make his Mana bullets hard and fast enough to pierce through targets, but that was also a problem. Once a projectile became powerful enough, it would often pass straight through the target and continue flying, meaning some of its destructive potential was wasted.
A spell that allowed the projectile to enter the body before releasing its power would be much more effective, especially against creatures with hard outer shells but softer internal organs.
Fire Volley Spell was another option that immediately caught his attention. Alex could imagine creating dozens of fire bullets or other fire-type projectiles and launching them at an enemy at the same time, and with enough power, he might eventually be able to create a massive rain of fire from above.
He could already create several Fire Bullets without such a spell, but controlling them was difficult. At present, three was his limit, and even controlling those three simultaneously required concentration. Alex believed Fire Volley Spell would teach him how to efficiently create and control multiple fire projectiles at once, and that knowledge might also help him control several other spells simultaneously.
Then there was Fire-Mana Weaving. The name immediately reminded Alex of Mana Cable Spell, since Mana Cables were created by ’weaving’ several Mana threads together into a single cable. At first, Alex could not understand what the spell would actually accomplish, because he could see how weaving Fire Mana and normal Mana together might allow him to compress the Fire Mana more efficiently, but he was not sure if that was all there was to it.
Then, a flash of inspiration struck him, and Alex immediately recognized the feeling. It was his SSS Rank Origin Spell Physique giving him enlightenment and showing him something he could not have understood through ordinary reasoning.
