The Wild Orcs pursued Alex, but he was already inside the school grounds, and his eyes immediately swept across the battlefield.
The entire area was flooded with people, with civilians and ascendants scattered across the grounds while injured survivors tried to stay away from the monsters. Even so, there were several gaps between the crowds, and Alex immediately focused on those areas because they gave him enough room to move without putting too many people at risk.
The first gap was near the Wild Orc Shaman. Just like the previous Wild Orc Shaman, this monster was holding a staff that looked like the previous SS Rank Staff, and Alex could not help wondering if such weapons were really that common among monsters or if there was another reason they had two SS Rank weapons.
That question did not matter right now. What mattered was that the Wild Orc Shaman was injured, with an iron rebar stabbed through its abdomen as it coughed violently and blood flowed from its mouth and wound.
Nearby, Roan was trapped inside a crushing hold created from the ground, with his body pinned down while the earth continued pressing against him. Despite the increasing pressure, he was staring at the Wild Orc Shaman with a bloodthirsty gaze, while several other people around the monster were trapped in similar earthen restraints or simply frozen in place.
Alex understood what had happened almost immediately. Roan had somehow managed to convince the captured people to help him, and many of them had rushed toward the Wild Orc Shaman, forcing the monster to divide its attention between them.
It could not freeze so many people at once, and with its ability weakened, Roan had managed to throw an iron rebar with enough force to break through its shield and pierce its abdomen. He had not defeated the monster, but he had created an opening.
The next target was the Wild Orc Leader.
The monster was standing farther inside the school grounds, still staring toward the sky as though it was focusing on some important matters. Around it, numerous humans were lying on the ground, bleeding and injured, and they had likely tried to fight back after the Wild Orc Leader fell from the building, only to be defeated easily.
It took Alex only a few seconds to gather all this information. Advanced Battle Instinct Spell allowed him to process the battlefield far faster than before, and he no longer needed to consciously examine every detail because his instincts were already connecting the information for him.
Alex moved toward the Wild Orc Leader with a blitz, forming two Mana Bullets with elastic mana casings. Fire Bullets would cause too much destruction in such a crowded area, while creating a Mana Railgun would take too long, so Mana Bullets would have to be enough for now.
Alex had taken only two steps when he realized that something was wrong. His foot moved forward, but the ground beneath him shifted backward at the same time, and when he took another step, the ground moved backward with him again.
Alex looked toward the Wild Orc Leader. The monster still had one hand raised toward the sky, but it was now staring directly at him, making it clear that it had noticed his approach.
’So it can use magic from this distance.’
Alex immediately understood what was happening. The Wild Orc Leader was most likely manipulating the ground beneath him, pushing it backward and preventing him from getting closer.
The Wild Orc Mage he had killed earlier could not use magic from such a distance, but this monster was clearly different. It had already created multiple shields at considerable distances to stop his Mana Railgun projectile, which meant its control over magic was far greater than that of the other Wild Orc Mages he had fought.
The Wild Orc Leader began forming several Earth Bullets. Alex pushed Mana and Will from his feet into the ground, thinking that if the ground was being controlled by a spell, then the spell should contain Origin Energy, and perhaps he could interfere with that energy and take control of the spell by forcing his Will into it.
Nothing happened.
Alex poured more mana into his soul, creating a flood of Will before sending it into the ground again, but it still did not work for some reason. The Earth Bullets were already flying toward him, leaving him no time to figure out why his method had failed.
Alex crouched and jumped, narrowly dodging the projectiles as his body shot toward the building on his right. While ascending, he reached out and grabbed a first-floor window sill, using the momentum to tilt his body sideways before his feet landed against the narrow ledge.
He jumped again, and the window sill shattered beneath his feet as he flew toward the Wild Orc Leader. The monster created two more Earth Bullets, likely because Earth Spears took more time to form, and fired them toward Alex while he was still airborne.
The Wild Orc Leader must have thought Alex could not dodge in midair. Alex created two hardened Mana Orbs, with one pushing against the front of his left shoulder while the other pushed against the back of his right shoulder.
His body twisted in midair, narrowly dodging the Earth Bullets as they passed by him. A Mana Sword formed in his hand, and Alex swung it toward the Wild Orc Leader as he reached the monster.
The Mana Sword clashed against the monster’s wand, and Alex gritted his teeth as the impact traveled through his arm and into his body. His blade vibrated violently against the wand, slowly digging into it as his feet finally landed on the ground.
At the same time, Alex fired the two Mana Bullets toward the earthen hold trapping Roan. Before he could check whether Roan had escaped, a powerful force of Origin Energy suddenly erupted from the Wild Orc Leader.
