Megan was an orphan and did not have much money, so getting good grades and finding a stable job had always been important to her. She had even worked part-time at Roan’s family mansion to support herself, which was how she had become acquainted with Roan as well. Her life had never been easy, but she had learned to keep moving forward because there had never been anyone else to do it for her.
Thinking of the mansion, she recalled the people who had died. Megan did not allow herself to dwell on it for long.
She activated her Emotion Control Skill and suppressed the fear, grief, and other negative emotions threatening to overwhelm her, allowing herself to focus on what remained. Alex and Roan had saved almost everyone who had been captured, including many of her co-workers, and that was something worth being grateful for.
When Megan reached her seventh patient, more injured people were brought into the school. They were groaning in pain, and some were in such terrible condition that Megan immediately called for additional help while preparing herself to treat them. She frowned as she looked toward the entrance, because the situation seemed to be getting worse instead of better.
After defeating the monsters, both Alex and Roan had lost consciousness. Megan still did not know what had happened to them, because the principal had taken them away shortly afterward and said that he would find someone capable of healing them. She could only hope that whoever he found would actually be able to keep the two of them alive.
The defeat of the Wild Orcs, however, had not marked the end of the disaster. More monsters started appearing after the apex predators of the region were killed, as if their deaths had removed something that had kept the other creatures under control.
Many Ascendants had formed groups to deal with them, moving through the surrounding areas and protecting the remaining survivors.
Megan was certain that Alex and Roan could have killed most of these monsters without much trouble. To the other Ascendants, however, those same creatures were nightmares, and Megan could not exactly blame them for being afraid.
She was an Ascendant herself, but knowing that did not make her feel confident whenever another monster appeared near the school.
There was another problem that could not be ignored for long. The enormous corpses left behind by the Wild Orcs had to be dealt with quickly, or they would begin to rot and contaminate the surrounding area. If things became bad enough, the result could be widespread disease and possibly even an epidemic.
’The world has really gone to shit,’ she thought.
Megan sighed internally as she continued working on the patients without stopping for long.
At least she had received superpowers in return for all this chaos, so there was that, even if she was beginning to wonder whether having powers was worth being forced to spend hours treating injured people.
Her own ability was not particularly useful in a direct fight, but it was extremely helpful in the current situation.
Megan was a Rogue, and her second skill allowed her to scan people from a distance and judge the condition of their bodies. Because of that, she could roughly estimate the conditions of one’s body, and how strong different Ascendants were, although there were limits to what she could understand through her skill.
She remembered using it when Roan and Alex had entered the school grounds to fight the Wild Orcs.
Just remembering it made her tremble unconsciously. The feedback from Roan told her his muscles were like highly compressed and tightly wound steel cables.
His entire body seemed to have surpassed the limits of ordinary human biology. Now that Megan thought about it, that was exactly what had happened.
Alex had been completely different. His body had appeared normal, with his muscles, bones, organs, and everything else looking almost exactly like those of an ordinary person. In fact, considering the injuries he had already suffered before arriving at the school, he should have been dead long before the battle ended.
Megan still could not understand how he had continued fighting. For a moment, she closed her eyes and remembered the moment when the two of them had arrived, with Roan moving with overwhelming speed and power. She had initially believed that he would be able to save everyone by himself, only for the Wild Orcs to bring him down.
Then Alex appeared.
Megan’s heart started beating faster as she recalled those moments. At first, she had not even recognized him because he was covered in dirt, injuries, and blood, with his clothes torn apart and several patches of skin burned so badly that they were difficult to recognize. Perhaps most people would have been frightened by that appearance, but Megan had thought he looked dashing.
She did not understand why she thought so. Was it because the moment he appeared, she suddenly felt that they were going to win, or because he made perfect decisions within split seconds while overpowering monsters that had seemed almost invincible only moments earlier?
Or maybe it was because she had always had a crush on Alex, so when he appeared, her mind had simply decided to see him as some kind of knight arriving to save everyone.
Megan wanted to groan at herself. She had never been able to decide whether she liked Alex or disliked him, because the two feelings had somehow existed together for years, mostly because he had always been the person standing between her and the top rank. Today, however, she could no longer honestly say that she had been unhappy to see him arrive.
"Aunty, why are you so red?"
Megan immediately snapped out of her thoughts and looked down at the new child she was treating. The corner of her lips twitched as she wondered why children these days were so damn rude, Back in her days, everyone had been much more polite and sweet.
"It’s nothing," Megan said with a smile as she finished treating the child’s injury. She patted the child’s head before giving the hair a particularly rough ruffle, deciding that a little petty revenge was completely justified.
