Alex woke with a jolt, but he could not focus on the screens in front of him. The only thing he could properly feel was pain, overwhelming and mind-numbing pain that made it difficult for him to even think clearly.

His instincts immediately reacted to the situation. He felt as though someone was holding him down, and there was noise coming from all around him, but he could not understand what anyone was saying.

Enemy?

Alex immediately began preparing Mana Sense, but this time he was not going to use it for observation. He condensed the spell into a hardened ring of mana around himself, intending to release it outward and throw away anyone who was grabbing him.

Before he could do that, Alex finally managed to activate Battle Instinct Spell. The spell did not remove the pain, but it gave him enough control over his mind to ignore the pain, allowing him to focus on his surroundings.

His vision slowly cleared, and he realized that several people were holding his arms and legs. One of them appeared to be a doctor wearing a white coat, while several others looked like nurses, and there were various medical devices connected to his body.

Alex stopped gathering mana as he understood what was happening. He was being treated, not attacked, and the people around him seemed relieved when he stopped struggling.

"How are you feeling, Alex?" the man in the white coat asked.

Alex used Advanced Battle Instinct to suppress the pain enough to think, then reinforced his throat and lungs with mana before speaking. "I’m good."

The doctor looked at him for a moment before smiling. "If you can say you’re good while being in that condition, then it looks like you really are doing better than expected."

Alex noticed a few of the nurses exchange glances before quietly sighing in relief. They had probably seen the mana ring he was preparing earlier, and although they would not have known what the spell was meant to do, it must have frightened them.

"I’m James Moriarty," the doctor introduced himself.

"Alex Mercer," Alex replied. Once they realized he was speaking normally, the people holding his limbs finally let go, allowing him to relax against the bed.

"Where am I?" Alex asked, as he tried to sit.

"You’re in the fourth block building of Patrick High School, third classroom, first floor. Now, if you could please stop using mana to reinforce yourself, Alex, I would appreciate it. It can interfere with the healing process," James answered.

Alex had already begun reinforcing his body when the doctor spoke, so he stopped and allowed James to push him back down. The doctor began checking his condition while the nurses adjusted some of the equipment around the bed.

Alex checked his own condition. Honestly, it was bad, really bad. Considering the state he had been in before losing consciousness, however, he was surprised that his body had recovered to such an extent, especially considering that he had already been standing with one foot in the grave during the final moments of the fight.

He sighed inwardly and smiled faintly. The battle had been fun, and although he had nearly died, he could not deny that he had been excited throughout most of it.

While looking at his body, Alex noticed something strange. There was a type of mana moving through his injuries, and after observing it carefully, he realized that it was being used to repair his damaged body.

Alex immediately became interested in it. He slowly reached his own mana to the injured areas and watched as the strange mana continued working, and without his concentrated mana interfering, the healing process became noticeably smoother.

This confirmed one of his earlier predictions. Mana could be used to heal injuries. His body continued to hurt, and he could barely move anything, but he decided not to interfere with the healing anymore. After a while, he looked toward James and asked, "How long was I out for?"

"Only one hour," James replied.

Alex looked at him with some surprise. "Only one hour?"

"The principal healed you with his skill and said you would probably need a day before waking up. So yes, I’m also surprised you’re already awake. How did you manage that?" James asked.

"Beats me. Maybe it’s related to how the bodies of Ascendants have changed," Alex answered.

James clicked his tongue and shook his head. "Altered biology. I’m going to have to start studying all of this if I want to keep working as a doctor."

The nurses nearby chuckled at his reaction. Alex smiled faintly before asking, "Are you still planning to work as a doctor? Wouldn’t it be better to become a fighter?"

"Doctors are going to become especially important now. There are going to be injuries and conditions we’ve never seen before, so I’ll probably have more work than ever. Though, yes, I’ll likely try to become a healer too," James said.

Alex nodded at that answer before looking toward the door. "Can I meet someone I know? I have a few things I want to ask."

"Sure, but don’t try doing anything reckless. Your body is still in terrible condition," James answered.

"I’ll keep that in mind," Alex replied.

The doctor left with the nurses, leaving Alex alone in the room. His body still hurt badly, but Advanced Battle Instinct allowed him to keep his expression calm while he waited.

Tina appeared as soon as the doctor left, and Alex immediately began asking her about their current situation. They talked briefly about what had happened to everyone and what condition the others were in before Tina finally started explaining everything that had happened after Alex had been left behind to fight the Wild Orcs with Roan.
