SSS Awakening: I am the First Legendary Mage

Alex stared at the three options. He was surprised by how good the rewards were because, while he had expected something valuable after completing the absurdly difficult Additional Class Evolution Requirements, he had not expected all three choices to be this useful.

Instead of choosing one at random, Alex carefully considered what each option could offer him. This was an opportunity he might not get again, so he needed to make the best possible use of it.

Mana Attunement seemed like something that would increase his compatibility with mana. After ranking up, Alex had already noticed that mana moved through his body much more smoothly than before, and he believed that ranking up had naturally improved his attunement to mana.

Increasing that attunement further should allow him to control and circulate his mana even more smoothly. This would make casting spells easier and could potentially allow him to cast them faster, which was certainly useful.

The Spell Slot was also an excellent choice. To most Mages, Alex suspected that this would probably be the weakest option because even if a spell wasn’t placed on their status screen, they could still use it normally.

His situation was different. The spells placed on Alex’s status screen could evolve, meaning that having another Spell Slot didn’t simply give him access to another ability.

It gave him another spell that could potentially grow stronger alongside him, so an additional slot could significantly increase his combat power if he chose the right spell.

Then there was the final option. A one-time meeting with a powerful Mage was extremely tempting. Alex could ask about the questions he had accumulated since becoming an Ascendant, and the Mage might even tell him something fundamental about magic that he had never considered before.

If the Mage was truly powerful, even a single piece of useful knowledge could potentially save Alex long time of experimentation. There was no doubt that this option had considerable value.

All three options were good, so Alex did what he always did when he had several choices that were difficult to compare. He used the process of elimination.

The first option he removed was Mana Attunement. It was undeniably useful, and being able to control his mana more smoothly and cast spells faster would certainly improve his combat ability, but Alex believed the other two options offered greater benefits.

That left the Spell Slot and the one-time meeting with a powerful Mage. Alex thought about the final two choices carefully before deciding to eliminate the meeting.

There were several reasons for his decision.

The first was that he didn’t know exactly what kind of Mage he would meet. Would it be an actual Mage who was a native of the Land of Origin, or would the System create some kind of being like a machine that was a Mage specifically for the purpose of this reward?

That distinction mattered quite a lot.

The System had said that Alex was the only person capable of evolving spells, at least according to the description of his Talent. Of course, the System had said this in a joking manner, and Alex had already learned that this damn thing could lie quite often.

There were times when the System’s descriptions made it seem genuinely surprised by the rewards Alex received from reward boxes. Yet on other occasions, it behaved as though it had deliberately selected those exact rewards for him.

Alex still didn’t know which version was true. It could be either. Because of that, Alex couldn’t completely trust the System’s claim that his Talent was unique.

However, if the System was telling the truth and Alex really was the only person who could evolve spells, then revealing that ability to someone from the Land of Origin could be extremely dangerous.

If the Mage somehow discovered Alex’s Talent—perhaps through some item—there was no guarantee that they would simply keep the information to themselves. A unique Talent that allowed someone to evolve spells would be incredibly valuable, and Alex couldn’t assume that everyone he met would be willing to let him keep such an ability for himself.

It was similar to discovering a huge oil field. Once people learned that something valuable existed, they would naturally want to obtain it. Just as countries could fight over oil fields, powerful individuals and factions from the Land of Origin might come after Alex and try to force him to use his Talent for their benefit. Alex had no intention of putting himself in that situation.

As for the System protecting him, it might do so, but Alex wasn’t willing to rely on that possibility. He was not the type to place his safety entirely in others’ hands when he didn’t even understand their true intentions.

The second problem was the duration of the meeting. What if Alex was immediately summoned to meet the Mage and the meeting lasted several days? That would be a huge problem because he still needed to find his parents and return to Hell Difficulty as soon as possible.

He simply didn’t have that kind of time. However, the opposite situation would also be a problem. If the meeting only lasted a few minutes, then Alex wouldn’t be able to learn much from a powerful Mage, especially if he had a large number of questions he wanted answered.

There was also another possibility that Alex couldn’t ignore. He wasn’t even sure that the Mage would be summoned to him immediately.

What if the System simply gave the Mage his location and told them to go meet Alex? If people could travel between the Land of Origin and Earth, the journey might take days or even weeks. Waiting for someone to arrive would be a waste of time that Alex couldn’t afford.

These three reasons were enough for Alex to reject the option. The meeting with a powerful Mage was certainly valuable, but there were simply too many uncertainties surrounding it, and Alex didn’t think the potential benefits were worth the risks right now.
