Trash Rank items barely affected his mind at all. The higher the item’s rank, the greater the burden seemed to be while storing it. It wasn’t a groundbreaking discovery, but it was another useful detail to remember.

He picked up the shoes next.

[Comfortable Shoes (F Rank)]

[So good that you will feel like you are running on air.]

[Effect: Massages your soles and keeps your feet comfortable.]

The shoes were white with green stripes and looked surprisingly ordinary. Alex changed into them without much thought. They were quite comfortable. Going by the item effect, they could also make a noticeable difference when someone spent hours running or fighting.

His attention shifted to the final useful reward, a plain black pet collar.

[Pet Collar (A Rank)]

[Don’t you dare ditch my baby and say it’s because she’ll be difficult to protect during the apocalypse.]

[Effect: Allows your pet to better understand your intentions. Agility (+5). Constitution (+5).]

Alex raised an eyebrow after reading the description. The wording made it sound as though the System had been written by an overly protective pet owner.

More surprising was the fact that his first A Rank item only granted ten stat points. That was still equivalent to four levels, but he had expected an item of that rarity to be even stronger.

Perhaps, this was how strong A rank items were. Or perhaps, there was something about the ranks that he did not know yet.

He looked toward Mia, who was sitting quietly on the bed watching him. For a brief moment, the cat’s eyes almost seemed unusually intelligent.

Alex tried to place the collar around his own neck first. Ten stat points were quite a lot if they came for free. But the collar refused to activate no matter what he did.

"So only pets can wear it," he said.

He walked over to Mia and gently reached toward her neck. The cat immediately leaned back and let out an unhappy meow, clearly protesting the idea of wearing a collar.

"I know you don’t like collars, Mia. But things are different now. If I’m going to take you outside with me, I need you to understand what I’m trying to tell you, and this should make that easier," Alex said.

Mia complained one last time before becoming still. Alex almost wondered if she had understood him.

He couldn’t help chuckling at the thought. She had always been an unusually smart cat, but there was no way she actually understood everything he had just said.

He carefully fastened the collar around her neck before taking a step back. Nothing about her appearance changed, and he didn’t feel anything either. Curious, he decided to test it anyway.

"Can you understand me now?" he asked.

Mia simply stared at him without reacting.

Alex tried something simpler.

"Are you hungry?"

The cat immediately answered with a loud meow. Alex laughed softly, walked into the kitchen, and poured cat food into her bowl. Mia began eating with her usual slow, graceful pace, never making a mess despite how hungry she must have been.

Alex leaned against the nearby counter while waiting for her to finish. They would be leaving the apartment soon, and the world outside had become far more dangerous than before. Before putting her through that, he wanted her to enjoy at least one proper meal.

Once Mia had settled down, Alex turned his attention back to the System.

’Show me my Class Evolutions,’ he said. According to what he read on Dwitter, after reaching Level 10 everyone could evolve their Class.

Unless an ascendent evolved the Class, they could not level up. The ’progress’ in levels they made while completing the evolution would be stored for later, and it would not be wasted.

[Alex Mercer can now evolve his Class. Generating Class Evolutions... Monk Mage, Berserk Mage, Spellsword, Fire Mage, Runesmith.]

Alex raised an eyebrow as the five options appeared before him. According to everything people had shared on Dwitter, most ascendants only received two or three evolution choices.

One particularly talented person had proudly claimed to receive four, and even that had been considered exceptional. Alex had been given five.

He looked over the list carefully instead of making a rushed decision. The Guide had explained that evolved Classes granted Spells, unlike the basic Mage Class, which came without one.

That made this choice one of the most important decisions he had faced so far.

He had also learned quite a bit from Dwitter over the past few minutes. As more people shared information from the Guide, certain details kept appearing repeatedly.

While not everything online could be trusted, information confirmed by hundreds of different people was probably accurate.

One of the biggest discoveries concerned Reward Boxes. A person’s Class determined the kinds of rewards they would usually receive.

Mages would never obtain Techniques, while Warriors would never receive Spells. Every Class naturally favored rewards that matched its own path.

Class Evolutions also increased "innate talent". For example, if an ordinary Mage needed ten days to learn Fire Bullet, then someone who evolved into a Fire Mage might only need eight days to learn the same Spell.

Two days might not sound like much, but over months or years the difference would become enormous. The stronger the Spells became, the more valuable that increased learning speed would be.

All of that meant choosing a Class Evolution suited to you was extremely important. Alex slowly studied the five options displayed before him, considering not only what they could offer now, but also how they would affect his future.

A powerful Class was valuable, but one with greater long-term potential was worth even more.

Monk Mage was the first option he looked at. It sounded like a close-range mage that fought with fists or perhaps a staff, which wasn’t really his preferred style. Even so, the name made him think about healing.

If the Class granted healing Spells, then it could easily become one of the strongest choices available.

He was already reaching the point where leveling up required killing large numbers of monsters. Depending on level-ups to recover from fatal injuries would become less reliable as time went on.

Joseph’s severed leg had also taught him that leveling up wasn’t a miracle capable of restoring everything.

If he wanted dependable healing in the future, he would either need powerful Priests beside him or become capable of healing himself.
