~BAM~

The impact of the punch rang through the chamber.

The counter began climbing again, faster than before. The digits blurred as they rose past ten thousand, past twenty thousand, past twenty-five thousand. The dummy itself rocked backward slightly against its floor mount before the reinforced base held.

The counter stopped.

<30,726>

Moon exhaled slowly.

"Thirty thousand. Ten times my max as a new Evolver. From a punch."

He looked at his fist. His body felt the same as it had before the punch.

His real max would be significantly higher.

His max with skills layered on top would be in an entirely different category.

He wanted to test it. But he also knew that pushing hard right now would either extend his recovery timeline or damage the dummy beyond Tom’s warranty. Neither outcome was worth the satisfaction of a full-power benchmark.

He lowered his fist and stepped back.

"Another day, at the association. They can pay for the damages."

’Time to learn a new skill.’

The excitement Moon always felt when he identified his next opportunity rushed through him. By the end of the day, he needed to be ready for Sierra’s training tomorrow. Before that, he wanted to expand his archery foundation as much as possible. And what better way to prepare for an Ascender’s training than by copying a powerful archer’s class ahead of time?

Copying a class from a strong practitioner would be his fastest and best way. Sierra’s training, layered on top of that foundation, would refine the details into something he could claim as his very own.

Moon had spent most of the week at Tom’s estate, but the place he had been most excited to explore was the training grounds. Tom ran a specific privilege for the talented fighters affiliated with the Glassy Group. Once a week, Awakeners and Evolvers received free training from Surpasser-tier practitioners across every combat category. Tanks. Assassins. Mages. Healers. Rangers.

The full spectrum.

Moon had been itching to copy some classes since the first time he had heard about the sessions.

The class today was starting in an hour. This time around, he could use his Eye of Truth to gain some insight on the various classes on offer, evaluate which one would provide the best fit for his current build, and copy the best option.

He pulled out his phone and sent Tom a quick text.

’I’ll be ready for Sierra’s training tomorrow. Let her know.’

Tom’s reply came back within seconds. A thumbs up.

Moon pocketed the phone and made his way toward the training grounds.

The training grounds occupied a large open-air complex at the northern edge of Tom’s estate. Multiple sparring rings. Archery lanes. Elemental containment fields for mage practice. A large stone circle for tank drills. Everything a serious practitioner would want, laid out in their own zones.

Moon arrived early.

He was the first person there.

He walked through the empty complex slowly to pass time. The grounds were pristine, Tom’s staff maintained everything to a professional standard even on non-training days. Every practice weapon was properly racked. Every dummy was in perfect repair.

He sat on a stone bench along the eastern edge of the complex and waited.

The Evolvers began to arrive twenty minutes before the session was set to start.

They came in small groups, walking together, discussing techniques, sponsors, and other things.

Standard training-day chatter.

Then one of them noticed Moon.

The people around him followed his gaze and a few clapped their friends on the shoulder to make them look. Voices dropped to hushed tones of the "is that really him" variety.

The group approached the bench, their expressions a mixture of excitement and awkwardness that came from meeting someone whose accomplishments they had followed on national news but who they had never expected to encounter in person so soon.

The bravest of them stepped forward first. A tall Evolver in his mid twenties, with a longsword strapped to his back and the composed bearing of a small-team leader.

"Sir Moon. We didn’t expect to see you here. It’s an honor."

The others behind him nodded in unison.

Moon rose from the bench.

His smile was warm and easy. He didn’t hold himself aloof. He simply extended his hand in greeting.

"Just Moon is fine. And the honor is mine. Tom told me about the training program. I’ve been looking forward to sitting in on a session for some time."

The tall Evolver blinked. He hadn’t expected the handshake. He recovered quickly and took Moon’s hand with both of his own, his grip firm and respectful.

"Please. Sit with us. Or don’t sit with us. Wherever you want. We’re... we’re just really glad you’re here."

Moon laughed softly.

"I’d like that. Sitting with you sounds good."

The Evolvers relaxed visibly.

One of them, a smaller woman with an archer’s stance and a soft, quiet voice, whispered something.

"What was that? I didn’t hear you." Moon said, staring at the petite woman.

Her face flushed for a moment before raising her tone, "We all watched the tournament, you were great...we were rooting for you to win."

She trailed off, unsure how to finish.

Moon smiled at her.

"I see, thank you for trusting me."

The tension in the group broke completely.

"Right. Speaking of the tournament, what happens now?" one of them asked curiously. "Will you receive the reward as the previous number-one contender?"

Moon shrugged. "I’m not really sure. I haven’t heard anything from the association about the tournament. But I doubt they’ll simply hand me the reward. Too many powerful people would be unhappy with how everything ended."

He paused before adding, "They’ll probably resume the tournament from where it was originally interrupted."

The others nodded in agreement. Moon’s reasoning made sense.

"Well, you’ll win it anyway," another person said confidently. "You’ve already shown everyone the gap between you and the rest of the competition. The only person who really stood a chance was Ace Morgan... but..."

The sentence trailed off, leaving the unspoken conclusion hanging in the air.

By the time the instructors arrived for the session, Moon had already learned everyone’s names.
