Moon smiled before charging directly at the alpha. Completely ignoring the mass of beasts thundering toward him from behind.

The distance closed in a heartbeat.

The alpha lowered its horns and met his charge with a lunging forward strike. Moon’s Air Step activated at the last seconds of its active time.

As Moon’s body leapt over the leader’s head, his sword made its way to the neck.

The alpha swung its head, defending its exposed neck.

Moon’s sword struck the horn, and the two were at a stalemate for a moment.

The blade bit into the horn. But the cut was shallower than it should have been.

The alpha’s horns were very dense, the Cragbrute’s strongest weapons.

Moon landed behind the alpha and immediately spun.

His right sword came around in a Tempest Symphony sequence aimed at the alpha’s rear flank. Phantom Strikes layered across the motion.

The alpha’s tail whipped sideways with impossible speed and tried to deflect two of the phantom strikes on its bony ridge.

The real strikes made their way through its defence, landing on the alpha’s hip.

The blade cut, and blood escaped.

The alpha spun.

Its three horns swept horizontally at Moon’s chest in retaliation.

Moon barely got his left sword up in time to block. The impact rocked his stance and sent him skidding backward across the packed dirt.

In front of him, the mass of charging Cragbrutes was closing in to help their alpha.

Moon activated Ice Storm.

Frost began to descend from the air in a wide burst. The chamber temperature dropped sharply as ice crystals formed across the floor and climbed the walls.

The Cragbrutes charging ran directly into the storm’s field. Their charge slowed as the Freezing Cold effect began layering onto their bodies. The Frostbite ticked across their hides, biting into muscle and bone.

Several of them collapsed mid-charge from ice shards that penetrated their skulls and necks.

Others staggered.

With the horde delayed, Moon’s attention returned to the alpha that was already charging towards him again.

Moon cast a Frost Pillar between them.

The autonomous ice structure erupted from the chamber floor and immediately began firing ice spears at the alpha. The alpha shattered the first three spears with sweeps of its horns, but the fourth caught its shoulder and slowed its charge for a critical fraction of a second.

Moon closed the distance.

Two swords, Tempest Symphony, Dual Wielding, all layered together in a beautiful display of swordsmanship that turned his blades into a blur.

Every strike sought the weak points in the alpha’s defence.

Every parry sought the favourable position to counter attack.

The alpha barely kept up with Moon.

Its horns blocked attacks that nearly killed it.

As the fight progressed, Moon grew more interested in the beast.

The alpha wasn’t using brute force like other body refiner beasts. But, rather, it was actively trying to read any pattern in his attacks before adjusting to gain an advantage.

Every other exchange, it timed a strike to arrive at exactly the moment Moon’s defensive rhythm dropped.

Some of those strikes came within inches of connecting. One grazed his side and opened a shallow cut across his ribs.

’This thing is really smart...’

Moon smiled.

He liked intelligent opponents.

They gave him the excuse to unleash everything in his arsenal.

Moon stopped playing conservatively.

Fire erupted from his palm and swept across the alpha’s face in a wide burst. The alpha bellowed and jerked back. Moon’s swords followed the fire in a quick combination that scored two fresh cuts across its exposed jaw.

Wind erupted from his stance and pushed him backward as the alpha tried to gore him again.

He landed twenty meters away and immediately conjured a wall of concentrated water between them.

The alpha charged through the wall and emerged soaked, its footing slightly compromised by the wet stone beneath its hooves.

Moon grinned, sending several bolts of purple lightning towards it.

The bolts struck the alpha, sending it into a momentary shock.

Its massive body seized as the current flooded through the puddled water and into every point of contact with its wet hide.

Moon closed the distance again.

His swords tried to find the alpha’s neck but were intercepted by a rushing Cragbrute that sacrificed its own life for its leader.

Moon’s sword slit the throat of the charging Cragbrute.

[You have killed the level 51 C-Rank Cragbrute]

[You have gained 50 Lives]

When Moon’s attention returned to the alpha, it had already regained control.

Still, Moon managed to send a final strike to the alpha’s shoulder that drew blood out before leaping away when the alpha swept its horns at his position.

Two explosive runes appeared in Moon’s hand. He hurled them forward, arcing through the air before detonating on both sides of the alpha.

Smoke rose thick around the alpha, and the chamber’s visibility dropped sharply.

The other Cragbrutes fell into chaos the moment their sightlines to Moon vanished. They began running through the chamber in erratic patterns, their heads turning wildly, their bellows echoing off the walls as they tried to locate the target they had been ordered to trample.

The alpha roared inside the smoke, its vision equally impaired.

Moon activated Air Step and rose silently into the air above the confusion.

Beneath him, the Cragbrutes ran through the chamber searching. Their hooves thundered across the packed dirt. Their horns swept low, trying to catch him if he was hiding at ground level.

Without the alpha directing them and without visual contact with their target, they were just angry beasts trying to find a needle in a haystack.

Moon smiled.

"I’m here."

Purple lightning crackled to life in his right hand.

He released both simultaneously.

The water burst downward first, spreading across the chamber floor in a wide radial sheet that soaked every Cragbrute below him.

The lightning followed a fraction of a second later.

Purple current tore into the water.

Every Cragbrute standing in the water simultaneously convulsed as the current flooded through their bodies.

Notifications flooded Moon’s vision.

[You have killed a Level 51 C-Rank Cragbrute]

[You have gained 50 Lives]

[You have killed a Level 49 C-Rank Cragbrute]

[You have gained 25 Lives]

[You have killed a Level 52 C-Rank Cragbrute]

[You have gained 75 Lives]

The notifications kept coming. Except for one, the alpha’s.

After several seconds, Moon cast a wind current from his palm and swept the smoke away in a single gust.

The alpha stood in the chamber’s far corner. Its massive frame was tucked beneath a natural stone overhang that extended from the wall. Its three horns were angled downward.

Its posture was crouched. Its hide was almost entirely dry.

It had taken cover.

The moment the water had started falling, it had recognized the danger from Moon’s earlier lightning-water combination and moved for hard cover before the lightning followed.

The overhang had shielded it from the water.

The alpha had learned.

Moon’s brows rose.

"Oh?"

The beast stared at him from beneath its cover. Its eyes locked with his in the air.

Every Cragbrute in the chamber except this one was now dead or dying at Moon’s feet.

The alpha stood alone.

Moon lowered himself slowly. His swords returned to his hands.

His stance stayed ready but he didn’t attack as he studied the beast

"You’re really smart. It would be a waste to kill you."

His voice was quiet, half musing to himself rather than expecting a response.

"Why don’t you become my subordinate instead? You’ll have a good life. Better than being alpha of a colony in a forgotten corner of a floating island. I’d take you to places you can’t even imagine. Give you fights worth your intelligence. Give you a purpose bigger than defending a nest."

He raised his hand.

[Curse]

The thread activated and reached across the chamber toward the alpha’s mind.
