SSS Awakening: I Can Class Change at will
Chapter 646: Battle of The Alphas [2]Before the thread could fully complete its bond, Moon felt something snap.
It was nothing like the pushback he usually recieved when mentally powerful targets resisted his skill.
It was a different experience alltogether.
The thread cut in half from an external source, cleanly, as if a third party had reached in and severed the connection at its midpoint.
Moon paused.
’What the hell was that?’
The sensation was completely unfamiliar. In his experience of using Curse across dozens of beasts and several humans, he had never experienced anything like it.
Failed attempts felt like the target pushing back, using their strong soul power to stop him from taking over.
External interference wasn’t something he had ever encountered.
There was no one else in the chamber.
Suspicious and curious, he cast Curse again despite the high mana cost of a repeat cast so soon after the first.
The thread reached out. Made contact before snapping again.
The same identical sensation.
Whatever had interrupted his first attempt was still active and had done the same thing on the second attempt.
"There’s something wrong about you. I just don’t know what it is." Moon muttered under his breath, casting his legendary skill on the alpha.
The reading coming from the Eye of Truth returned the same information Moon had already knew.
Nothing in the readable information suggested a power that could defend against Curse.
Which meant whatever was blocking his skill wasn’t part of the alpha.
’Only one way to find out.’
He was going to have to beat it to death and examine the body afterward.
With the other Cragbrutes all dead and Rowan safely evacuated from the chamber, Moon felt significantly freer in his approach.
He stood in stance with both swords ready. Purple lightning threaded down one blade.
The alpha stepped out from beneath the overhang cautiously with its horns lowered, tracking Moon’s every movement, realizing that it had no choice but to engage with him in a battle to the death.
The alpha’s greatest strength during the earlier fight had been its ability to read patterns. It had catalogued Moon’s combat rhythm over minutes of exchange and had used that intelligence to time counter-strikes at the specific moments when Moon’s defensive coverage dropped.
That strength became its biggest weakness as Moon began generating fake patterns for the beast to bite on.
He opened three consecutive Tempest Symphony sequences with the footwork that suggested a fourth would follow. The alpha’s pattern-recognition kicked in. It committed to a counter-strike timed for the anticipated fourth sequence that it had seen several times.
Moon didn’t produce the fourth sequence.
He generated a Frost Pillar in the space where the alpha’s counter-strike was arriving. The pillar erupted directly into the beast’s exposed flank as it committed to a strike that no longer had a target. Ice bit into its hide., making the beast bellow and stagger in pain.
Moon’s swords carved into its exposed side while it recovered.
He repeated the tactic with variations, catching the alpha off guard numerous times. Moon’s abundance of element control and phantom strikes didn’t make things easier either.
The alpha’s intelligence turned against itself.
Every time it tried to predict Moon’s next move, Moon fed it a false signal and countered the counter. The beast’s confidence in its own pattern-reading collapsed within minutes.
It lost its rhythm and touch, no longer posing any threat to Moon. Its horns began missing more strikes than they landed. Its footing wavered as it stopped trusting its own timing.
Its body racked up wounds faster than its regeneration could handle, bringing it closer to death’s door, a step at a time.
Its bellows became more painful as blood pooled beneath its hooves.
Five minutes later, the final exchange arrived.
Moon set up a fake take, the alpha had learned to associate with the wide-area frost technique.
As the beast braced for the incoming storm of ice, Moon Air Stepped directly above the alpha’s braced position and dropped down onto its back with both swords angled downward.
The blades drove into the alpha’s spine at the base of its neck.
The strike penetrated the softer gap between two vertebrae where the beast’s strong hide was weakest.
His right sword punched through. His left sword drove in beside it, widening the wound.
~ROAR~
The alpha collapsed as its legs gave out beneath it. Its massive body hit the ground with a powerful thud. Its breathing became a wet rattle.
Moon stood atop the fallen beast, his swords still buried in its back.
The alpha was dying but not yet dead.
He cast Curse one more time. He wanted to know if the defensive effect that had blocked him earlier would still activate.
The thread reached out.
Once again, the skill was interrupted.
Whatever was defending the beast was still active even now.
Moon’s brow furrowed.
He couldn’t figure it out from the outside. He would need to examine the body properly once the fight was over. The Curse’s failure meant the alpha wasn’t useful as a subordinate anyway, so there was no reason to prolong its life.
He drove his swords deeper and twisted, rupturing vital organs that kept it alive.
The alpha shuddered once and slowly went still several seconds later.
The notification flashed in Moon’s vision.
[You have killed a Level 59 B-Rank Cragbrute Alpha]
[You have gained 9,250 Lives]
Moon exhaled slowly.
The Lives gained from killing the B-Rank beast was substantial.
The alpha had been at the pinnacle of B-Rank with the physical foundation of a peak body refiner beast.
Although it didn’t provide much spiritual energy to Moon, killing it had translated into a meaningful harvest of lives and experience.
[You have leveled up!]
The pleasant sound of levelling up soothed his ears, reaching level 42.
Moon pulled his bloodied swords free of the alpha’s spine and stepped back off the corpse.
His eyes stayed on the body, curious about what secrets it held.
Before he could move, Moon suddenly felt a sharp stinging pain in his head.
"Agh!!!"
