’Oh shit!’ Alicar’s eyes widened, ’Same rank but one level below the Wendigo.’

The creature before him was a towering monster made out of petrified wood with thick iron plates embedded into its bark, its form standing nearly three meters tall, its massive limbs ending in heavy, club-like fists that could crush stone.

It was extremely slow, each step taking several seconds as it lumbered forward, but its body was covered in layers of dense, hardened material that could tank almost any attack thrown at it.

Alicar summoned his power, channeling his mana into a massive fireball that roared through the air and struck the Ironbark directly in its chest.

The flames exploded on impact, sending waves of heat across the clearing, but when the smoke cleared, the Ironbark hadn’t even budged, its surface barely scorched.

"Damn..." Alicar mumbled, his eyes narrowing with frustration. "Still not enough firepower even with a maxed out skill? That means no awakener could even hope to scratch it..."

For the next thirty minutes, Alicar tried everything he had in his arsenal to damage the Ironbark, but unfortunately nothing he attempted succeeded in even scratching its surface.

Not only did none of his attacks work, not even a fully charged elemental blast that he poured all his mana into with devastating force, not even the devastating three-element combination that had torn through the Shadow Wraith, and not even a powerful Demon Fist strike that would have shattered most monsters of this level, but the monster didn’t even seem to want to fight him in return.

It simply stood there, towering and unmoving, its massive form casting a long shadow across the clearing.

Its iron-plated body gleamed faintly in the dim light, and it slowly walked toward Alicar but without any urgency, as if it was simply going through the motions of its existence.

Once it reached him, it just slowly lifted its massive fist, the limb moving with ponderous slowness.

BAM!

Then it slammed into the ground with such power it caused a massive shockwave that made several trees fall, the ground cracking beneath the impact, sending tremors through the earth.

Then it would repeat the cycle, lifting its fist again and bringing it down with the same slow, deliberate motion.

The attack was very easy to dodge for anyone with even basic reflexes, the pattern predictable and unchanging.

Alicar dodged again and again, his movements becoming almost automatic as he studied the creature, looking for any weakness he could exploit, any gap in its defenses that would allow him to deal damage.

He tried aiming for its joints, the spaces between its iron plates where the wood was exposed, its eyes which glowed with a faint inner light.

But nothing worked, the creature’s defenses simply too strong to penetrate with his current power level.

"I don’t think this thing is supposed to be beaten," Alicar mumbled, frustration creeping into his voice as he dodged another slow punch. "Though its made from such a strong material I’m sure the Awakener Association would pay a lot of money to make armor with it."

After realizing that the Ironbark was essentially a walking fortress with no intention of actually harming him, its attacks purely defensive in nature, Alicar decided to stop wasting his energy and move on, leaving the creature to continue its slow, aimless patrol through the forest.

He continued like this for the next few hours, moving through the dense forest and hunting anything that crossed his path.

He killed around two dozen monsters of various types and levels, which was enough to bring him on the verge of leveling up to level 18, his experience bar nearly full.

As a result, he also managed to store all these corpses in his Spatial Ring, the dimensional pocket filling up nicely with valuable materials, and acquire 5 more Evolution Points from consuming their cores, his power growing incrementally.

By the time it was night in the real world, Alicar was tired, his body aching from the constant fighting.

And so he returned to the base through the main gate, his steps heavy with exhaustion.

It was much more busy than when he had left, the plaza filled with awakeners going about their evening business.

Their voices were creating a low hum of conversation, and Alex, Daan and Levi were still present to talk with many people, surrounded by a crowd of admirers hanging on their every word.

’They didn’t even bother training for the day before the expedition, huh,’ Alicar thought, shaking his head in disbelief as he observed them. ’These guys are really dumb if they think they can just coast on their talent alone.’

He almost felt happy that they had ditched him after he didn’t acquire a class during the awakening ceremony.

Otherwise he’d have been stuck with them and their arrogance would have driven him insane over time.

"Where’s the other girl?" Alicar asked a nearby veteran of the base, a grizzled man with scars across his face, "They should be getting ready for the expedition, right?"

"In the strategy building with Lord Edwin," the awakener replied, pointing toward the large stone structure in the center of the base. "She spent most of the day fighting outside the base, and now she and Lord Edwin are speaking about their plan for tomorrow."

"Alright, thanks," Alicar nodded, filing the information away in his mind.

Edwin and Mia seemed to be the only ones who were actually careful about this entire thing, taking the Wendigo threat seriously and preparing accordingly with proper planning and research.

On the other hand, Alex, Levi and Daan were pretty carefree, believing their own strength would be enough no matter what, their overconfidence blinding them to the danger that lay ahead.

Either way, after a few minutes, Edwin, Mia, and some other veterans of the base came out of the strategy building, with Edwin holding a piece of paper in his hand, his expression grim and focused.
