"Bravery is the capacity to perform properly even when scared half to death." — Omar Bradley.

The golden roulette wheel materialized in Micah’s mind.

It spun wildly through the colors as the rush of combat made the borders blur together.

It clicked past the low-tier sections and locked onto a glowing blue orb. The orb shattered.

[Talent Acquired: Kinetic Shockwave (Active, Mid-Tier)]

[Kinetic Shockwave: Releases a concentrated burst of kinetic force from any point on the user’s body. Effective for crowd control and disrupting enemy formations.]

Micah didn’t hesitate. He completely ignored the bleeding bite wound on his thigh and channeled a massive surge of his Awakened Flux Energy directly down into his right boot.

He raised his leg and stomped his foot against the cracked pavement with everything he had.

BOOM!

A large shockwave of pure kinetic force erupted outward from the point of impact. It rippled through the dense concrete like an earthquake.

The ground cracked in a circle around him.

Dozens of charging wolves were violently thrown into the air. The overwhelming blast shattered their ribs and completely disrupted the pack’s coordinated offensive formation.

The explosive shockwave left the lesser wolves disoriented. They crashed into one another in a chaotic pile of broken limbs and shattered teeth.

The wall of fur and fangs that had been pressing in from all sides suddenly broke apart. The street was littered with twitching, whimpering bodies.

The surviving wolves stumbled around in blind circles, their coordination gone, their formation shattered.

The massive devastation provided the exact opening the squad needed.

"Move!" Micah roared.

Dexter charged forward. The paralyzing panic from the first ambush was gone, replaced by the fierce, trained aggression of one of the academy’s top-ranked recruits.

He gripped his broadsword with proper form and threw himself into the staggered wolves with brutal efficiency.

He swung the heavy blade in wide, powerful arcs that bisected the stunned mutants. He fought like a man who had finally accepted that his noble name meant nothing out here, but his skill and strength meant everything.

A wolf lunged at him from the left. Dexter pivoted on his front foot and brought the broadsword around in a horizontal sweep that caught the beast across the neck.

The blade didn’t cut clean like the Widow’s Wail would have, but the sheer force behind the swing was enough to snap the creature’s spine.

The wolf dropped mid-leap and skidded across the concrete.

Another wolf came from the right. Dexter didn’t flinch. He kicked the fallen body of the first wolf into the second one’s path, tripping it, and followed up with a downward chop that drove his blade through the creature’s skull.

The broadsword buried itself to the hilt in bone and brain matter.

He pulled it free and moved to the next one.

Myra had already disappeared. Her stealth technique swallowed her completely as she wove through the staggered beasts.

She moved like a ghost. Her daggers found vital organs with the ruthless efficiency of a trained assassin.

Wolves collapsed without a sound as she cut their throats and severed their spines from the shadows.

She reappeared for a split second behind a wolf that was trying to circle around Thomas. She drove her blade through the base of its skull.

The creature stiffened before collapsing to the ground.

Thomas held the rear with everything he’s got!

His iron blade was heavy and crude compared to the Widow’s Wail, but he made it work. He didn’t chase the wolves.

He let them come to him, planted his feet, and hit them so hard that the ones behind stumbled over the bodies of the ones in front.

He caught a wolf mid-leap with an uppercut that lifted the creature off the ground. It flipped backward and landed on its back with its jaw hanging at the wrong angle.

Thomas stepped on its chest and drove his blade through its heart.

Tasha fought beautifully. Her acrobatic movements were perfectly synchronized with Micah’s as she protected his blind spots.

She flipped over a charging wolf and brought both blades down into its back. The dual strike drove the creature into the ground. She spun past another beast and severed its tendons without missing a beat.

She was a whirlwind of steel and muscle, cutting down any beasts that tried to flank Micah’s position.

Two wolves tried to rush Micah from behind while he was focused on the Alpha.

Tasha appeared between them like she had materialized from thin air. Her left blade caught the first wolf across the eyes, blinding it.

Her right blade caught the second wolf under the jaw, the tip punching through the top of its skull.

Both wolves dropped. She was already moving before the bodies settled.

Micah ignored the dying fodder. He focused his absolute attention entirely on the towering Alpha at the far end of the street.

His Beast Analysis talent highlighted the creature’s highly complex, dual-nervous system.

The system mapped the network of energy connecting the monster’s two massive heads to a single primary spinal column.

He studied the data. The Alpha’s two heads shared a centralized core at the base of the neck.

Unless he simultaneously severed the primary spinal column, the Alpha would simply regenerate the damage and continue the relentless assault.

A single clean cut to one head wouldn’t be enough. He needed to take both heads at once, or sever the spine connecting them.

The Alpha roared in fury. It completely ignored its dying pack.

The massive beast lowered both of its heads and lunged directly at Micah.

Its twin maws slammed together with enough kinetic force to crush solid steel.

Micah engaged his Shadow Step Boots. The thrusters fired at maximum capacity.

He slid completely under the beast’s initial pounce. The creature’s jaws snapped shut above his head.

The wind from the bite ruffled his hair as he skimmed across the concrete on his back.

As he slid beneath the beast, he dragged the Widow’s Wail along its thickly armored underbelly.

The micro-vibrating blade cut into the dense bone plating.

Sparks flew from the contact point. The blade failed to penetrate deeply. It left a bleeding gash across the Alpha’s stomach, but the thick armor stopped the edge from reaching the vital organs underneath.

The beast roared in pain and fury. The shallow gash further infuriated the monstrous leader.

It spun around faster than something that size should have been able to move. Its paws tore deep gouges into the concrete as it pivoted. It locked both pairs of golden eyes onto Micah and prepared for another charge.

Micah scrambled to his feet. His thigh throbbed where the wolf had bitten him, and the sheer force of the Alpha’s movement sent a wave of pressure across the street.

The Widow’s Wail hummed in his grip. The micro-vibrating edge was desperate for a clean strike, but the Alpha’s armor was too thick for a standard slash.

He needed a bigger opening. He needed to hit the creature with something it couldn’t ignore.

The Alpha pawed the ground. Both heads snarled. The dual sound was deafening. It was getting ready to charge again, and this time, it wasn’t going to miss.

Around them, the slaughter continued. Dexter was carving through wolves with a controlled fury that was nothing like his panicked flailing from the first ambush.

Myra was a shadow that killed without being seen. Thomas was a wall that hit back. Tasha was a storm of blades that protected Micah’s flanks without being asked.
