"Death is not the greatest loss in life. The greatest loss is what dies inside us while we live." — Norman Cousins.

The Alpha came like a landslide.
Both heads were low and angled outward, and the twin jaws spread wide enough to swallow Micah whole.
Its paws tore through the concrete with every stride.
Micah planted his feet and waited. The Widow’s Wail hummed in his grip, and the Shadow Step Boots were primed.
Beast Analysis was feeding him data in real time.
BOOM!!!
The first head lunged high and the second lunged low. Both jaws snapped at him from different angles.
One aimed for his throat and the other aimed for his legs. It was a coordinated attack designed to catch him no matter which way he moved.
He couldn’t dodge both.
The Shadow Step Boots fired. He threw himself to the right, away from the high jaw, but the low jaw caught his leg.
The fangs didn’t sink in, but the force of the impact sent him spinning through the air.
He hit the ground hard on his shoulder as he rolled twice before his boots finally found solid footing.
The Alpha was already turning. Both heads were bleeding from the belly gash, and the golden eyes were brighter now, burning with a fury that went beyond pain.
It was learning.
The first charge had been a straight lunge, and the second had been a dual-angle trap. The third would probably be worse.
Micah got to his feet. His thigh was bleeding freely and his ribs were bruised. The Phantom Carapace had saved him from the worst of the damage, but the Alpha’s raw power was pushing through the suit’s diffusion layer with every hit.
The Alpha charged again.
This time, it came in low with both heads sweeping across the ground like twin battering rams.
The tactic eliminated Micah’s ability to slide underneath. There was no gap between the creature’s body and the ground.
It was a wall of fur and fangs moving at full speed, and Micah had nowhere to go.
He tried to pivot. The Shadow Step Boots fired a lateral burst and he moved three feet to the left.
The first head missed him, but the second head didn’t.
The creature’s skull caught him in the side. The impact was devastating. His body left the ground entirely and flew sideways through the air before crashing through the wall of a ruined building.
BOOM!
The concrete wall collapsed around him. Bricks and dust rained down as he hit the floor inside the building on his back.
His spine slammed against the stone hard enough to turn his vision blurry. Blood filled his mouth, and pain shot through his left side as he felt something shift unnaturally.
He tried to stand, but his left leg buckled. He caught himself on one knee and coughed blood onto the floor.
The Widow’s Wail was still in his right hand. He didn’t remember keeping hold of it, but his grip was still tight around it.
Through Beast Analysis, he could see the Alpha turning outside. Both heads were scanning the rubble, and the golden eyes found him through the hole in the wall.
The creature pawed the ground and charged straight at the building.
Micah threw himself sideways as the Alpha hit the wall like a battering ram.
The entire structure shook and the ceiling cracked.
Chunks of concrete fell as the creature’s head punched through the wall where Micah had been kneeling a second before.
He scrambled through a gap in the rubble and made it back to the street, but the Alpha was already pulling itself free from the collapsed wall.
Both heads shook off the dust and debris, and the golden eyes found him again.
Micah’s breathing was ragged. His body was failing him, and the Phantom Carapace had limits.
The force of being thrown through a wall and having a building collapsed on top of him had pushed through the diffusion layer repeatedly.
The Widow’s Wail hummed in his grip. The blade was untouched and the micro-vibration edge was still singing at forty thousand cycles per second.
But the blade couldn’t help him if he couldn’t land a clean hit on the Alpha’s spine.
The creature’s armor was too thick and the belly gash wasn’t deep enough to kill. The Kinetic Disruption strike would work on the spine, but he needed to get close enough to touch it.
And every time he got close, the Alpha hit him harder than anything he’d faced since the Obsidian Drake.
The Alpha charged a third time, and this time it was different. Both heads split apart. One went left and one went right as the creature’s neck stretched outward.
Micah couldn’t go left, he couldn’t go right, and he couldn’t go under. The only direction left was forward.
He charged directly at the Alpha.
The Shadow Step Boots fired at maximum thrust, propelling him forward. The left head lunged at him, and he ducked. Its jaws closed above his head, but the right head was already coming for him.
He couldn’t avoid it.
The right head’s fangs sank into his left shoulder, and the pain was catastrophic.
The fangs punched through the Phantom Carapace at the shoulder joint where the protection was thinnest.
They drove deep into the muscle and bone beneath, and Micah felt his shoulder separate.
The fangs were so long and so deep that they severed the muscle fibers connecting his deltoid to his collarbone.
Blood sprayed from the wound in thick, pulsing streams.
He screamed. It was a painful scream that filled the ruined street.
His knees buckled.
The Alpha shook him like a rag doll, swinging itm head from side to side.
His body was dragged through the air, still caught on its fangs, until the creature finally released him.
He crashed onto the concrete.
He hit the ground on his back. His left arm was completely dead and his shoulder was a mess of torn muscle and blood.
The Phantom Carapace was shredded at the joint, and the advanced fabric hung in ribbons around the wound.
His uniform was soaked through, and the concrete beneath him was turning dark.
