SSS-Class Zombie Overlord: My Undead Legion Evolves Infinitely!
Chapter 54: There You AreValeria City was home to nearly ten thousand residents. As such, under the rules established by the Awakeners Association, the enormous city had been divided into four distinct sections.
Each of these sections served a different purpose and was carefully separated from the others.
The guards and various awakener teams primarily used the fourth and outermost section. It was the first line of defense against the monsters that occasionally wandered toward the city.
Precisely because of this, the awakeners could be seen patrolling throughout the area at almost every hour of the day.
Some were preparing to leave the city in search of monsters, while others had just returned from their hunts, carrying the remains of their prey to exchange for resources.
The third section, located further within the city, belonged to the ordinary residents. Unlike the outermost district, this area was relatively peaceful, consisting of countless households, apartments, and residential buildings where normal humans could live their lives without constantly worrying about the monsters outside.
The second section, however, was somewhat different, as it contained schools, hospitals, stores, and various facilities that served both ordinary humans and awakeners.
There were grocery stores where normal residents could purchase food, while specialized equipment shops sold weapons, armor, potions, and other items that only awakeners could properly utilize.
However, the innermost section was reserved solely for awakeners. It was deliberately separated from the ordinary residents, creating a clear boundary between the two groups while still keeping the awakeners close to the center of the city.
And at the very heart of Valeria City stood the most important building of them all—the Awakeners Association.
The enormous structure was twelve stories tall, making it the tallest tower within the entire city. Its exterior had been reinforced with materials extracted from monsters, giving the building an appearance that was both modern and sturdy enough to withstand attacks.
The highest floor had been assigned as the private meeting hall of the Seven Radiant Stars. Normally, whenever the seven members needed to discuss important matters, they would gather there.
But today, instead of meeting on the top floor, all six members currently present had gathered in the lobby.
Christine was among them as well, her expression considerably more serious than usual. The other five Radiant Stars remained hidden beneath their familiar robes and masks.
None of them had revealed their identities to the public. It wasn’t because they didn’t care about the envoy. In fact, if there was anything they cared about right now, it was probably him.
Fame.
Who didn’t want a piece of it?
For ordinary people, fame represented admiration, respect, and authority. But for awakeners, fame could sometimes become a pair of shackles.
If an awakener with little power suddenly obtained an enormous amount of authority, there would inevitably be people who envied them. Some would admire them while others would come to bear hatred against them.
And eventually, some would even attempt to drag them down—it was simply a part of human nature.
But the same principle applied in reverse as well.
For people like the other five Radiant Stars, who had spent years using their subordinates as expendable pieces and manipulating others for their own benefit, revealing their identities would be nothing short of foolish.
Who knew how many enemies they had created over the years? How many people had suffered because of them? How many families had lost someone because one of the Radiant Stars had decided that their lives were worth sacrificing?
There was no way to know; every human being spent a portion of their lives wearing different faces.
A face for their friends, a face for their enemies, a face for the people beneath them, and another for those standing above them.
But there was always a time when a person could finally remove all those masks. A moment when they could lower their guard and become nothing more than themselves.
And in that moment, they were naturally at their weakest.
If someone decided to strike them down then, what could they do?
That was why the five Radiant Stars had always hidden their identities.
It wasn’t fear; or at least, that was what they told themselves.
At this moment, the five of them stood around the lobby while quietly discussing the arrival of the Association’s envoy.
Their voices remained low, yet their expressions were considerably more tense than before.
"Do you think he’s already inside the city?" One of them asked quietly.
"Impossible." Another shook his head in disagreement.
"The guards would’ve noticed."
Christine chose to remain silent as she quietly listened. Although she didn’t particularly like their attitudes, she understood why they were nervous.
An envoy wasn’t someone they could afford to underestimate.
Whoosh.
Suddenly, a faint gust of wind swept through the lobby. Instantly, Christine’s expression changed.
Similarly, the others immediately stopped talking, widening their eyes as they looked around.
There wasn’t a single door or window open on this floor. Yet somehow, a cold breeze had passed directly through the lobby.
"D-Did you feel that?" One of them hesitantly stammered, but nobody answered him.
Because at the same time, another sound entered their ears.
Jingle...
It was extremely faint, almost like the soft ringing of several small bells. Christine’s heart suddenly tightened as her hand instinctively reached for her chest.
Then, she noticed something even stranger. The expressions of the five awakeners sitting around her had changed completely.
Their faces had become pale as all of them stared directly towards her with horrified expressions.
But as she saw their faces, Christine noticed a subtle change. They didn’t seem to be looking at her...
But rather, behind her...
Christine’s breathing slowed down for a moment as a strange chill slowly traveled down her spine.
She didn’t immediately turn around, since for some reason, every instinct within her body was telling her not to.
However, she couldn’t remain like this forever. Slowly, she twisted her neck and looked back.
And the moment she saw what was behind her, her pupils contracted.
A tall man was squatting on the farthest edge of the backrest of her couch.
Even while crouching, his body appeared imposing, and judging from his proportions, he was easily over six feet and five inches in height.
But what truly made Christine’s heart skip a beat wasn’t his height; instead, it was the way he was sitting.
Only the tips of his toes were touching the backrest.
Most of his feet were hanging in the air, while the rest of his body extended outward with almost no support.
His balance was so unnatural that an ordinary human would have fallen immediately, and yet the man remained there effortlessly.
It was almost as if gravity had little to no effect on his body. He wore long, baggy white robes that covered most of his body.
The clothing was loose enough that it swayed gently with every movement, while a long veil descended from his head and covered his face from the top of his forehead all the way down to his chest.
Only a small portion of his features could be seen beneath it.
His body, however, was clearly lean and muscular beneath the loose robes. Long dark hair flowed wildly over his shoulders, some strands slipping across the veil and moving gently with the faint breeze.
But what immediately caught Christine’s attention were his ears.
Two distinct teal bells hung from them like earrings. They were attached through bright crimson threads that contrasted sharply against his pale robes.
Jingle...
One of the bells moved slightly; the sound entered Christine’s ears as her entire body instinctively froze.
The man playfully tilted his head; the long veil swayed with the movement, revealing just enough of his lower face for Christine to notice the faint curve of his lips.
There was no obvious hostility within his expression. However, He seemed strangely amused, as though he had simply found something entertaining.
Christine’s hand slowly tightened around her chest as her mind was already moving rapidly.
How had he entered? Where were the guards? How had none of them noticed?
How had he appeared directly behind her without making a single sound?
The other five Radiant Stars remained completely still; none of them dared to make the first move.
They had all sensed a strange pressure surrounding the man. The pressure was neither overwhelming nor particularly violent.
But there was something about his presence that made their instincts scream. It was equivalent to the feeling of standing before something they couldn’t understand.
Christine slowly raised her gaze, while the man continued staring at her from behind the veil.
For a moment, neither side spoke. Then the man tilted his head once again, causing the teal bells hanging from his ears to sway gently.
Jingle...
At last, he finally spoke; his voice was soft—almost soothing. But strangely, the voice caused a sudden chill to run through Christine’s spine.
"There you are."
