SSS-Class Zombie Overlord: My Undead Legion Evolves Infinitely!
Chapter 55: Familiar ScentA few hours ago, when the sky was still painted in a deep blue hue and a giant moon shimmered above the center of the world, Jake stood silently within the second innermost district of Valeria City.
As someone who had spent nearly a decade protecting this place, there was hardly an alley, street, or hidden corner that Jake didn’t know about. Yet, at this moment, he deliberately avoided the main roads.
A few days ago, he had suffered severe injuries after being forced to use the last resort of his class against the White Serpent.
Originally, Jake had awakened a C-rank class—the Storm General. It was a class that allowed him to harness the power of storms and lightning in battle, fighting like a general commanding these destructive forces of nature.
However, an awakener could only bring out the true potential of their class after reaching an overall rank comparable to it. Jake, on the other hand, was only D-rank.
Thus, when he forcefully circulated the purest and most condensed lightning through his body, the backlash had nearly destroyed him from the inside.
His flesh had been torn apart, his bones had been burnt, and even his Nox channels had suffered considerable damage.
"Thankfully, the blood ants helped me quite a lot," Jake muttered beneath his breath as he glanced down at his body.
Several small crimson crystals were still attached to different parts of his flesh. They had been crude in their treatment, but they had done exactly what Jake needed at the time.
The crystals had sealed his wounds and prevented his condition from worsening, giving his body enough time to begin recovering on its own.
Even so, Jake wasn’t certain about his current condition. His strength had fallen all the way to E-rank after the battle, and although his body had begun recovering, he didn’t know how much damage remained hidden beneath the surface.
That was precisely why he had chosen to sneak into the city instead of simply walking through the main entrance. The guards stationed around Valeria City were often subordinates of the other Radiant Stars.
If they discovered that Jake had survived, there was no telling how the others would react. In his current condition, fighting even one of the Radiant Stars would be extremely troublesome. Frankly speaking, Jake had no intention of gambling his life on their goodwill.
Most of his clothes had already been reduced to little more than rags, so he eventually removed his shirt and wrapped the torn fabric around his face and hair.
He found it considerably more bearable to expose his bare chest than to reveal his face. After all, there were plenty of people in Valeria City who knew what Jake looked like.
His current appearance was already suspicious enough. But if someone recognized his face, it would be troublesome.
Jake quickly made his way toward the shopping district, keeping his head lowered as he passed through the streets. A few people stared at his strange appearance, but Jake ignored them with the best of his abilities.
He simply continued walking until he reached a narrow alley. The moment he entered, the air changed drastically.
The alley was filthy, damp, and filled with the foul smell of sewage. Even ordinary residents avoided entering such places unless absolutely necessary.
’It should be here.’ His eyes swept across the surroundings before finally landing on a large dumpster pushed against the farthest wall.
The metal surface had become covered with moss, while the garbage inside had already begun to rot.
Jake walked toward it without hesitation, and then he swiftly started rummaging through the trash.
One after another, large trash bags were thrown onto the ground as Jake patiently searched through the disgusting pile.
Under normal circumstances, he would never have willingly touched such a place, but at this moment, he couldn’t care less.
After searching for several minutes, his fingers finally touched something cold and metallic. Instantly, his movements hastened as he quickly pushed the remaining trash aside.
A silver briefcase appeared beneath the garbage. His eyes brightened at the sight of it.
"Found it..." He muttered under his breath, his voice heavy with emotion. A trace of genuine hope appeared within Jake’s expression.
He quickly pulled the briefcase out and wiped some of the dirt from its surface before opening it.
Click.
Inside were nearly ten small glass tubes, each carefully placed within a layer of soft foam.
These tubes were filled with a bright green liquid, with a small wooden cork sealing their mouths.
"Healing potions..." Jake stared at them for a moment before letting out a quiet breath.
After the apocalypse, almost everything in the world had been affected by Nox. Monsters had appeared, animals had mutated, humans had awakened strange powers, and even the earth itself had undergone tremendous changes.
Naturally, plants were no exception either.
Countless herbs and plants had developed properties that had never existed before the apocalypse.
With the emergence of support-type classes such as alchemists, humans eventually discovered ways to utilize these mutated materials and turn them into potions.
Healing potions were among the most common. Of course, potions were also divided according to ranks.
The ones inside Jake’s briefcase were only mid-tier at best, but that was more than enough for an awakener of Jake’s current rank.
Staring at these glass vials, he couldn’t help but smile bitterly. He had placed these potions throughout the city at different locations over the years.
’Looks like I wasn’t being paranoid after all.’ He shook his head slightly.
He had never considered himself a stupid man; the fact that he had survived this long in the apocalypse was proof enough.
Even when Ethan had questioned him, Jake had continuously managed to strike back with enough answers to avoid exposing himself.
If he hadn’t been burdened by his current condition, he might have even been able to give that strange man a much more troublesome fight.
Unfortunately, the timing had simply been wrong.
Jake removed the cloth covering his face and threw it aside. Then, without wasting another moment, he picked up the first glass tube.
He removed the cork and gulped it down at once.
A strange green light immediately began spreading from within his body. Jake’s expression showed no change; he expected such a reaction.
The warmth gradually reached his chest before spreading toward his limbs; at the same time, he quickly drank another.
Before long, he finished drinking the last vial. With every potion he consumed, the green light surrounding his body became brighter.
His torn flesh began closing, while his burnt bones gradually recovered. Even the destroyed Nox channels within his body began repairing themselves at an astonishing speed.
The sensation was almost surreal, as a strange warmth spread throughout his body, replacing the pain that had accompanied him for the past few days.
He slowly sat down in a puddle of stagnant water and leaned his back against the dirty wall.
He didn’t care about his surroundings. Right now, nothing else mattered more than his body’s recovery.
In only a few breaths, Jake could already feel his lost strength beginning to return.
’I’m not too late.’ That realization caused his eyes to become slightly moist.
He had been prepared for the possibility that his body might never completely recover.
But now, His strength was steadily climbing beyond E-rank.
The small crimson crystals that had been attached to his wounds began falling from his body one after another.
Clink.
Clink.
Clink.
Beneath them, the damaged flesh had already healed completely, given that He had consumed all ten potions.
They were precious enough that even an ordinary awakener would hesitate to use them all at once.
But Jake didn’t regret it; he needed his strength back.
And within approximately thirty minutes, his body had completely recovered.
Jake slowly clenched his fist, feeling a familiar strength coursing through every inch of his body.
He couldn’t help but smile heartily before recalling the details of these past days.
The strange figure—Noah Reeds.
The White Serpent.
Thinking about these two topics, Jake’s expression slowly became solemn.
’What happened to the White Serpent?’ He couldn’t stop thinking about it.
He had unleashed nearly everything he possessed in that final attack. The lightning had descended with enough force to create a massive crater where the Blood Ravine once stood.
Hundreds of monsters had been caught in the aftermath, while the White Serpent had disappeared.
Jake had hoped that it was dead. But another part of his mind couldn’t accept such an easy conclusion.
’If I survived that attack...’ His eyes darkened. ’Then there’s no reason to believe it couldn’t have survived as well.’
That particular thought continuously gnawed at his peace. Eventually, he decided to stop thinking about it.
For once, he simply wanted to rest. No matter how strong an awakener became, he was still human.
His body had spent days desperately repairing itself. As such, it needed time to recover and return to its best condition.
Thus, Jake decided to remain inside the filthy alley.

Several hours passed.
The deep blue sky gradually disappeared as crimson light began spreading across the horizon. At this moment, Jake eventually opened his eyes.
He slowly stood up and stretched his body, feeling refreshed.
Now, he could finally return to the association’s branch and inquire about the serpent without worrying about the other stars.
However, just as Jake had begun to move, his body suddenly froze. Almost instantly, his expression worsened as his sharp senses caught a familiar scent.
The scent was extremely faint, enough for one to ignore it completely, especially in a setting like that. But Jake caught it perfectly, almost as if he recognized it.
His eyes widened as his heart began pounding in a ragged pattern. "No..."
He immediately rushed out of the alley. His appearance was haggard, his body covered with dirt, while his hair and skin remained damp with dirty water.
But Jake didn’t care; instead, he focused on running as fast as he physically could.
People on the streets turned their heads in confusion as the strange man sprinted past them.
Jake didn’t even notice them; his mind had become completely occupied by the scent.
’No, no, no, no...’
He repeatedly denied a certain possibility in his mind as his speed continued increasing.
’It can’t be.’ But the closer he got, the stronger and the clearer the scent became.
Eventually, Jake’s legs gradually came to a halt. His breathing became rough as his eyes wildly stared ahead.
At some distance ahead, a group of seven people was moving together.
Six members of the Seven Radiant Stars and one veiled man.
Jake’s gaze immediately landed on the man walking somewhat aloofly at the very back of the group, his long white robes moving gently with every step. His face remained hidden beneath the veil.
In that moment, despite the distance, his sharp senses allowed him to clearly catch the man’s voice.
"Well then..." the veiled man spoke casually, as though discussing something completely ordinary. "...let’s go harvest the Ironfeather Eagle before ending the White Serpent."
