Ethan’s breathing gradually became heavier. For several seconds, he simply stared at the screen without saying anything.
It felt as if an enormous mountain had suddenly collapsed upon his shoulders, forcing him into a corner before he could even understand what was happening.
He didn’t even know the enemy’s strength.
Only the connections between him and his undead continued disappearing one after another, each loss causing a strange emptiness to spread through his mind.
’Twenty-seven...’ He repeated in his mind.
Frankly, it was quite ironic.
Over the past few battles, Ethan had gradually become accustomed to winning.
From awakening as a zombie to obtaining the Zombie Overlord class, from surviving his first encounters with monsters to establishing an entire colony under his authority, everything had progressed far faster than he had expected.
His strength had increased, and so did his subordinates’. Even his understanding of the world had begun expanding. Because of that, although Ethan had never completely forgotten his desire to survive, he had indeed become slightly full of himself.
In a way, his confidence was justified.
Who wouldn’t become confident after possessing an SSS-rank class, an SSS-rank evolution skill, an entire colony of undead, and the ability to continuously grow stronger?
But this confidence had always been controlled; at least, Ethan had believed so.
He had never considered himself invincible. Yet even while standing in an open forest without any obvious restrictions, an unprecedented danger had suddenly fallen upon him.
’Who is attacking them?’ That was the only question that mattered right now.
Even more precisely, ’How strong are they?’
Ethan began analyzing the situation from the very beginning. First of all, the zombie blood ants never moved together in large groups.
Whenever they left the nest, Ethan deliberately ordered them to spread throughout the surrounding forest, allowing them to form an enormous web around the colony.
Because of this, killing twenty-seven of them simultaneously would be nearly impossible unless the attacker had attacked the nest itself.
’They’re not being hunted individually.’ As the stress continued to accumulate and muddle his thoughts, he tightened his jaw.
’The nest is being attacked.’
The blood ants weren’t ordinary living creatures anymore.
Their stats were low, but they had numbers and coordination, and most importantly, they possessed no fear of death.
Every F-rank monster, regardless of its potential, had its attributes capped at ten.
Humans, on the other hand, possessed stats capped at fifteen when they were F-rank.
The difference alone was enough for a human to defeat an ordinary F-rank monster under normal circumstances.
But numbers changed everything.
Against dozens of F-rank monsters, even an E-rank awakener could face considerable trouble if they were surrounded.
The blood ants were even more troublesome because they specialized in coordinated attacks.
’But there’s another problem,’ he rummaged through his thoughts.
The blood ants weren’t alive.
When an ordinary living creature sensed danger, its first instinct was to preserve itself.
Fear. Pain. The desire to escape.
Those instincts existed for the sake of survival, but the zombie blood ants had already lost them.
They didn’t care about their own lives; if an enemy entered the nest, the ants would rush toward it without hesitation, sacrificing their bodies if necessary to protect the colony.
Therefore, even an E-rank monster shouldn’t have been capable of casually slaughtering more than twenty of them in an instant.
’Unless the difference in strength is enormous.’
Reaching an unfortunate conclusion, he gritted his teeth. ’At least D-rank...’
The conclusion was rushed, and Ethan knew that. There were too many variables that he didn’t even understand.
Maybe the attacker possessed an extremely powerful skill.
Maybe the terrain had influenced the battle.
Maybe there were more enemies than he imagined.
But based on the information he currently possessed, D-rank was the safest assumption.
Unfortunately, that wasn’t the only problem.
Whoever was attacking the colony wasn’t stopping. Every passing second meant another subordinate could be lost.
Ethan desperately searched through his thoughts, attempting to find any method that could help him escape this situation.
But the more he thought, the more helpless he felt. He was too far away from the nest, and he didn’t even know what he was fighting against.
’What can I do?’ His gaze slowly drifted toward the enormous eagle lying in the distance.
For several hours, Ethan had remained hidden while observing it.
He had considered killing it; he had considered leaving, and he had even considered waiting.
But he had never dared to approach it since there were simply too many unknown factors surrounding the creature.
However, Ethan suddenly remembered the reward he had just received.
Soul Agreement.
His gaze flickered with inspiration as an idea jolted into his mind. ’An agreement that wagers the souls of both parties...’
For the first time since the emergency notification appeared, he halted his thoughts.
The Overlord System had always been strange. It had occasionally malfunctioned, and its responses were sometimes delayed, but despite that, it had never truly betrayed him.
Whenever it rewarded him, the reward was usually far more useful than he initially understood.
So why had it given him Soul Agreement at this exact moment?
’Could it be...’ Ethan’s eyes shifted toward the eagle again.
Perhaps this wasn’t a coincidence after all?
Maybe the system had already recognized something he didn’t?
His mind flashed through the possibilities before he finally made his decision.
’I don’t have time to hesitate anymore.’ He clenched his fingers into fists before moving out resolutely.
After hiding for so long, he had already confirmed that the surrounding area was relatively safe.
The creatures feeding on the eagle were vigilant, constantly watching its movements to avoid being crushed or struck by its enormous body. But the moment Ethan stepped out from the vegetation, every single creature surrounding the eagle froze.
Their tiny bodies instinctively stiffened: the rats stopped chewing while the insects scattered.
Even the weaker monsters that had been consuming the eagle’s flesh immediately raised their heads.
A strange darkness radiated from Ethan’s jade-green body, one that was only visible to them.
The animals were already close to becoming monsters, but they were still animals at their core.
With just a single glance, they could tell that the creature standing before them was dangerous.
Their hearts trembled as they immediately fled in different directions, abandoning the enormous corpse they had been feeding upon.
Ethan didn’t pay them any attention as his eyes were fixed on the eagle.
He slowly approached until he stood beside one of its enormous wings.
The creature didn’t react to his movements, given that its body was simply too exhausted.
Its enormous chest rose and fell weakly as a fine stream of blood continued flowing from its wounds.
Ethan extended his hand toward it. His fingers eventually touched one of the eagle’s massive feathers.
The moment his jade-green skin came into contact with it, a familiar cerulean screen appeared before his eyes.

Ethan’s eyes slightly widened as the deep lines completely disappeared from his forehead.
"C-rank..." he muttered unconsciously, trying to digest the truth.
So this was the difference between himself and a true high-rank monster.
Even while lying half-dead on the ground, the creature before him possessed a rank that was two major stages above his own.
