Ethan’s eyes slightly widened as the deep lines completely disappeared from his forehead.

"C-rank..." he muttered unconsciously, trying to digest the truth.

So this was the difference between himself and a true high-rank monster.

Even while lying half-dead on the ground, the creature before him possessed a rank that was two major stages above his own.

The Ironfeather Eagle felt something touch its body.

For the past several days, all it had felt was pain. Every passing moment had been accompanied by the stinging sensation of claws and teeth tearing through its flesh, while countless creatures gathered around its body in search of even the smallest piece of meat.

Yet, it now felt something different. It was a simple touch, one that wasn’t warm. Instead, it was cold, almost like the touch of a corpse.

The eagle’s dormant senses slowly began returning as it attempted to understand the unfamiliar sensation. Its enormous body remained motionless against the ground, but its consciousness gradually became clearer.

The eagle’s eyelids slowly opened as its deep brown eyes swept across the surroundings. The animals that had been feeding on its flesh were gone.

Instead, standing merely at an arm’s distance from its enormous body was a strange creature—a zombie.

But unlike the mindless undead creatures the eagle had encountered before, this one possessed an intelligence that was immediately apparent from its expression.

The zombie stood quietly, seemingly lost within his own thoughts. His jade-green body radiated a strange darkness, while his eyes remained fixed upon a flickering screen that only he could see.

The eagle stared at him for several seconds, thinking, ’What... is this creature?’

Meanwhile, Ethan continued staring at the information before him.

C-rank.

Boss Monster.

Even after everything he had experienced since awakening, encountering such a powerful monster so suddenly was something he had never expected.

The difference between E-rank and C-rank wasn’t something that could simply be ignored.

If this creature were in perfect condition, Ethan doubted he would even have the qualifications to stand before it.

But right now, he had no time to think about such matters. A familiar sensation suddenly appeared within his mind.

Yet another connection had disappeared in the blink of an eye, turning his expression into a grimace.

The emptiness that accompanied the destruction of his subordinates was becoming increasingly noticeable.

His system continuously notified him of their deaths, while the invisible connections that had once existed between him and the zombie blood ants were being severed one after another.

’They’re still dying.’ Ethan finally snapped out of his thoughts.

His gaze immediately shifted toward the enormous creature lying before him as the eagle’s deep brown eyes stared directly at him.

For some reason, Ethan couldn’t detect any obvious emotion within them—it was strange.

Monsters weren’t mindless creatures.

Although their intelligence varied depending on their rank and potential, stronger monsters often possessed intelligence comparable to humans.

They could feel hatred; they could experience fear, while some even possessed pride and ambition.

Eris had already explained all about this to him.

Monsters with greater potential naturally possessed greater intelligence, and once their strength reached a certain level, understanding human language wasn’t particularly difficult.

Some superior monsters had even developed their own languages to communicate with their kind to make sure humans couldn’t understand them.

So why wasn’t he sensing anything from this eagle?

Ethan hesitated for a moment; there was something else he needed to confirm.

He didn’t know whether the eagle could understand human speech; there was only one way to find out.

"Do you bear any hatred towards humans?"

The moment his words fell, the atmosphere changed.

Boom!

An invisible pressure suddenly descended upon Ethan. His entire body stiffened in an instant as the terrifying force wrapped around him.

It wasn’t merely pressure.

It felt as if something had wrapped itself around every part of his body, gradually tightening his muscles and crushing his bones with increasing force.

Ethan’s feet sank slightly into the blood-soaked earth while his expression changed as he realized the difference between them.

This was the pressure of a C-rank monster.

Even while heavily injured and unable to properly move, the creature still possessed enough strength to make his entire body tremble.

"SCREEEEEEEEEEEECH!"

The injured eagle’s deafening roar exploded throughout the forest.

Ethan’s eardrums ruptured almost instantly as the sound waves violently shook his head. His vision blurred, while the surrounding trees trembled beneath the force of the cry.

But Ethan didn’t retreat.

[Your skill—Pain Resistance (F)—has been activated!]

The pain that should have accompanied the damage was almost nonexistent within his zombie body.

And before the damage could become troublesome, it had already begun to heal.

└ ■ Regeneration (C)

The torn flesh around his ears regenerated rapidly, and within moments, his damaged eardrums had completely recovered.

Ethan steadied himself and continued staring at the eagle. The creature’s enormous chest rose and fell violently.

Hatred.

That was the emotion Ethan could finally see.

Ironfeather Eagles were unusual creatures by nature.

Unlike many other powerful monsters, they didn’t actively hunt humans. They lived far away from human settlements, preferring isolated territories where they could survive by hunting animals and other monsters.

This eagle had been doing exactly that. It had lived peacefully within the forest, hunting whenever it needed food and avoiding the territories of humans... Until nearly a week ago.

Humans had appeared near its nest. And as sly as they were said to be, none of them had fought it fairly.

They ambushed it and used underhanded methods the eagle couldn’t understand. Doing so, they had managed to capture it alive before dragging it into this isolated region.

The enormous metallic shackles had been wrapped around its neck and legs, while massive anchors were driven directly through the edges of its wings.

At first, the eagle had believed that its strength would be enough to break free. Though it had been wrong.

The chains weren’t anything ordinary either, since no matter how much strength it exerted, they refused to break.

Even worse, something within them seemed to suppress the eagle’s Nox; it couldn’t gather its energy.

It couldn’t properly utilize its innate strength or spread its wings freely.

For days, the Ironfeather Eagle had struggled against them. As a result, it had accidentally torn its own flesh.

It had broken feathers and exhausted nearly every ounce of strength within its body.

But it never surrendered, all because Ironfeather eagles were prideful creatures. To them, dying while fighting suited far better than dying in cowardice and submission.

And now, after days of helplessness, it had been reduced to food for weaker creatures. Every time the eagle struggled, the chains tightened, and the wounds worsened.

The hatred it felt toward humans had therefore reached a level that Ethan could immediately understand.

The eagle slowly calmed down. Its enormous eyes remained fixed upon Ethan, carrying a faint trace of hostility.

Ethan took a long breath and spoke. "As long as you help me save my subordinates, I’ll help you regain your freedom."

The eagle’s eyes flickered. "Although you may not remain yourself afterwards..." Ethan continued, his voice remaining firm despite the enormous pressure surrounding him. "I swear that I won’t act against you."

For several moments, the forest became silent as the eagle simply stared at him.

A zombie.

An intelligent zombie capable of speaking human language fluently. And yet, despite possessing such intelligence, the creature only emitted the aura of an E-rank monster.

The situation was almost amusing. If the eagle refused, it would undoubtedly die.

It was already heavily injured, its body exhausted and its strength suppressed by the strange chains.

Even if Ethan did nothing, the eagle’s death was only a matter of time.

But if it accepted... There was at least a chance.

A chance to escape. Survive.

And perhaps a chance to take revenge against the humans who had brought it to this state.

The eagle’s gaze gradually became colder; a strange thought emerged within its mind.

’Why would I refuse?’

It didn’t matter what happened to its body afterwards or what kind of existence it became.

As long as it could leave this place, it would finally be free.

And if this strange zombie truly possessed the ability to release it, then there was no reason to reject the offer.

The eagle slowly gathered what little strength remained within its body.

Its enormous head moved slightly, nodding in agreement. Ethan’s eyes widened slightly, shimmering with brilliance.
