SSS-Rank Awakening: My Talent Multiplies Everything
Chapter 204: Strange Patterns.Without wasting any more time, the men began asking their questions.
Fortunately, none of them were particularly complicated.
They wanted to know what Kael remembered about the Rift, what he had encountered inside, how the exploration had progressed.
Their questions were direct, and Kael answered them just as simply, describing the events he could remember without adding unnecessary details.
He couldn’t help but notice how respectful they were toward him throughout the questioning.
Perhaps it was because he was an S-Rank Hunter. If an ordinary Hunter had been in his position, Kael suspected the Association’s Investigation Unit would have pressed much harder, especially considering the strange circumstances surrounding the Rift’s disappearance.
Regardless, he had no intention of making things difficult for them.
Kael carefully described most of what he remembered while deliberately keeping one particular detail to himself.
The moment he had snapped out of the illusion.
He still didn’t understand what had happened during that moment, so there was no reason to hand over information he couldn’t even properly explain.
After receiving all the answers they needed, Mr. Smith thanked him before standing.
"That should be everything for now. If we require anything else, someone from the Association will contact you."
Kael nodded.
"Alright."
The three men left shortly afterward, the door closing behind them and leaving Kael alone in the hospital room once again.
The moment they disappeared, Kael’s relaxed expression faded.
His brows furrowed.
He immediately dove into his memories.
Fortunately, the Cataloguer Title made searching through his memories far easier than it should have been. Rather than being a chaotic collection of fragmented experiences, his memories were organized almost like an enormous archive. Finding a particular event was normally a matter of locating the right section and following the sequence backward.
It didn’t take him long to find what he was looking for.
There it was.
A particular memory had been tucked away in the deepest corner of his mental archive, almost like an old book shoved into the farthest corner of an enormous library.
Kael stared at it through the strange perspective of his own consciousness.
His brows slowly tightened.
"Am I not supposed to see what’s inside?"
That was the missing section of his memory.
The hole.
Some part of what happened during his fight with the brain-like creature, had disappeared from his conscious recollection, yet here it was, sitting quietly inside his mind as though it had been deliberately placed somewhere he wouldn’t stumble upon it by accident.
For several seconds, Kael hesitated.
Every instinct told him that there was a reason this particular memory had been buried so deeply.
But curiosity eventually won.
He reached toward it.
The instant his consciousness touched the memory, it unraveled.
The cave appeared before his eyes.
Kael saw the final moments of the battle.
He saw the brain-like creature transform.
He saw himself pushed toward death.
Then came the Doomsday Protocol.
Everything after that became a blur.
The memory accelerated through events that Kael could barely process. He saw himself obtain some kind of mysterious power before his body changed and he entered the Equalizer Form.
Then the world changed.
No.
Not the world.
His perception of it.
Everything around him transformed into something completely different from what his eyes had previously understood. The cave vanished beneath layers upon layers of incomprehensible patterns. Everything existed as information.
Streams.
Countless streams.
Data flowed through his vision in quantities that should have been impossible for a human mind to process. Every object, every movement, every fragment of space seemed to contain endless amounts of information, all of which suddenly became visible to him.
Kael couldn’t understand any of it.
Yet his mind continued trying.
More information poured in.
The sheer volume overwhelmed his consciousness.
His thoughts slowed.
His awareness faded.
He entered a trance.
The strange patterns became the only thing that existed within his world. He no longer noticed the cave. He no longer noticed his body. He couldn’t even tell whether he was still standing or whether time itself had stopped.
There was only the endless stream of information.
And then something jolted him.
Kael’s consciousness was violently ripped away from the memory.
The scene collapsed.
The memory sealed itself once again.
His vision went dark for an instant before reality returned.
Kael’s eyes slowly opened.
"Kael."
He blinked.
"Kael?"
The voice sounded distant.
His vision remained blurry for several seconds before finally coming into focus.
Lyra was standing directly in front of him.
"Kael, are you alright?"
Kael stared at her blankly.
His mind felt groggy, as though he had just woken from an extremely deep sleep.
"Huh?"
Lyra frowned.
"I asked if you’re alright. Should I call the doctor?"
Kael slowly shook his head.
"Yeah. I’m alright. No need to call the doctor."
"You were just sitting there completely unresponsive."
"I’m fine. I was just out for a while."
"Out for a while?"
Lyra stared at him incredulously.
"You literally looked like an idiot. You were literally drooling so much that I thought you’d lost your mind."
Kael’s eyes widened.
"I was drooling?"
"You were."
"You must be exaggerating."
"I’m not."
Kael rubbed his face before glancing toward her with a confused expression.
"Anyway, didn’t you say you were going home? You’re already back?"
Lyra gave him a strange look.
"Of course I’m back. It’s been three hours, bro."
Kael froze.
"Three hours?"
His mind immediately exploded.
Three hours?
He had been inside that memory for three hours?
That was impossible.
He had only experienced what felt like a few moments of memories, yet three entire hours had passed in the real world.
Kael slowly turned his head toward the window.
The sunlight entering the room had shifted noticeably from where it had been earlier. The direction of the shadows had changed as well.
There was no denying it.
Lyra wasn’t exaggerating.
He had really been unconscious for three hours.
Kael’s expression became solemn.
What exactly had happened inside that memory?
He couldn’t even begin to understand it.
Lyra continued staring at him.
"Are you sure you don’t want me to call the doctor?"
"No."
Kael shook his head.
"I’m truly alright."
He didn’t mention what had happened.
There was no point.
If anything, the experience had taught him one very important lesson.
Never touch that memory again.
It had been tucked away for a reason.
Kael leaned back against the pillow and sighed internally.
Perhaps I really am developing a penchant for courting death.
Why else would he deliberately examine a memory that had been carefully isolated and buried in the deepest corner of his mind?
He had practically invited trouble.
Kael looked up again and found Lyra staring at him.
"I’m really alright. I was just a little lost in my thoughts."
Lyra stared at him for another moment before finally looking away.
"Sure. I didn’t say anything."
She went quiet for a few seconds before remembering why she had returned.
"Anyways, the doctor said you’ll need a few more checkups. After that, you’ll be discharged. So you’ll probably be getting out of here this afternoon, or tomorrow morning at the latest."
Kael nodded.
"That’s good."
He had no intention of spending another night in a hospital room if he could avoid it.
Lyra suddenly lifted the bag she had been carrying.
"Okay."
She placed it on the small table beside the bed.
"Time to eat."
