SSS-Rank Awakening: My Talent Multiplies Everything
Chapter 203: Men In Black.Moments later, the door opened once again, and Lyra walked back into the room with a man dressed in a white coat. Two doctors and several nurses followed behind him, carrying medical equipment as they quickly moved toward Kael’s bed.
Lyra remained near the corner of the room, watching quietly as they began their examinations.
They checked his pulse, scanned his body, examined his eyes, and ran several tests to make sure there were no lingering complications from the injuries that had left him unconscious.
Kael remained still throughout the process, allowing the medical staff to do their work.
He could feel the faint pressure of the various scanning devices passing over his body, but nothing particularly painful.
After several minutes, the doctors finally finished. The leading doctor glanced through the results displayed on his tablet, scrolling through the information before giving a small nod.
"He’s fine. His body has recovered from the injuries, and there doesn’t seem to be any internal damage either. From what I can see, he’s just about ready to be discharged. We only need to run a few more tests to be completely certain, then there shouldn’t be any reason for him to remain here."
Lyra immediately relaxed upon hearing those words.
"Thank you, Doctor."
The doctor gave her a reassuring nod before turning around. The nurses followed him out of the room, leaving the door to close behind them. For a few seconds, silence settled over the room.
Kael glanced toward Lyra.
She was still standing there, her arms folded loosely in front of her as she stared at him.
There was something strange about her expression, something he couldn’t quite place. She hadn’t said much since returning with the doctors.
Kael eventually broke the silence.
"Hey, aren’t you going to say anything to me?"
The moment the words left his mouth, something flew toward his face.
Kael reacted on instinct.
His hand shot upward and caught the object before it could smack him in the forehead. He lowered his gaze and realized he was holding Lyra’s phone.
"Why?"
Lyra’s voice trembled slightly.
"Why do you have to speak?"
Kael blinked.
Lyra turned her face away, her hands tightening against her clothes as she tried desperately to hold herself together.
"I was trying so hard to hold back my tears."
Kael stared at her for a moment before a small smile appeared on his face.
"It’s okay if you want to cry."
"No."
Lyra immediately tilted her head upward, staring at the ceiling as though physically forcing the tears back into her eyes.
"You’re the one who got hurt. Why should I be the one crying?"
Her voice became quieter toward the end.
"I’m just glad you’re alive."
For a moment, she remained like that, her eyes fixed on the ceiling. Then she lowered her head again. The tears that had threatened to fall were gone, replaced by a serious expression that made Kael instinctively feel that something unpleasant was coming.
Lyra stared directly at him.
"No more new Rift exploration for you."
Kael’s smile disappeared.
"Come on."
"Ever again."
"Lyra."
"No."
"At least let me explain."
"No."
Kael sighed.
The glare she gave him made it painfully obvious that arguing wasn’t going to get him anywhere.
"Okay, okay. Whatever you say, missus."
Lyra continued staring at him for another few seconds before finally looking away.
Kael chuckled softly before his expression became more serious.
"Anyways, what happened?"
He shifted slightly against the hospital bed, his brows furrowing.
"How did I end up in the hospital? And how long was I out for?"
He paused.
There was something bothering him.
His memories felt strange.
Scrambled.
He could remember entering the Rift. He could remember the cave. He could remember the strange creature that resembled an enormous brain. He could remember fighting it and the strange sensation that followed.
But there was something missing.
A section of his memories seemed to have been cut away.
He couldn’t tell what had happened during that missing period, only that something should have been there.
Lyra remained silent for a moment.
"I don’t know what happened either. The Association is still investigating."
She pulled a chair closer to the bed and sat down.
"The new Rift you guys entered suddenly vanished and threw everyone inside back out. You were the only one who was unconscious among them."
Her voice cracked slightly when she reached that part.
Lyra quickly composed herself before continuing.
"I don’t know much more than that. The Association is keeping everything very low-key at the moment, but since I’m family with one of the victims, they decided to let me in on some of the information."
She paused, seemingly deciding how much she should tell him.
"They believe your memories were edited."
Kael’s expression changed.
"Edited?"
The word immediately caught his attention.
He had already figured out that the brain-like creature had trapped them inside some kind of illusion, but memory editing was something else entirely.
"Wait."
Kael’s eyes narrowed.
"The Rift. How long were we inside it?"
Lyra looked at him.
"You guys were trapped in there for two days."
Kael’s eyes widened slightly.
"Two days?"
"Yes. But that’s not the strange part."
Lyra’s expression became solemn.
"Everyone who came out remembered themselves entering and exiting the Rift as if they had been inside for days."
Kael froze.
His mind went completely silent for a moment.
Then the implications struck him all at once.
Everyone remembered entering the Rift.
Everyone remembered spending days inside it.
Everyone remembered coming back out.
But according to Lyra, they had only been trapped for two days.
Kael’s fingers slowly tightened around the phone in his hand.
Did that mean they had all fallen into the illusion the moment they entered the Rift?
The thought sent a chill through his body.
What kind of ability could accomplish something like that?
It wasn’t simply creating an illusion.
It had apparently been capable of manipulating the memories of everyone trapped inside it, creating an entire false sequence of events that they accepted as reality.
Kael opened his mouth, intending to ask another question.
Knock. Knock.
Both Kael and Lyra immediately turned toward the door.
A voice came from the other side.
"Come in."
The door opened.
Three men dressed in black suits entered the room.
The man leading them appeared to be in his early thirties. He had sleek black hair and a serious expression that never seemed to waver as he stepped into the room. The other two men followed several steps behind him, their expressions equally composed.
The leading stopped beside Kael’s bed.
"Good day, Mr. Kael."
He reached into his coat and briefly presented an identification badge.
"I am Mr. Smith. We are part of the Hunter’s Association Investigation Unit."
His gaze settled on Kael.
"We’re here to ask you some questions regarding the Rift you entered. Do you have a moment?"
Lyra immediately stood.
"I’ll leave."
Kael glanced at her.
"I’ll go get you some food and a change of clothes."
With that, she left the room.
The door closed behind her.
Kael looked toward the three men standing before him.
The atmosphere in the room changed almost immediately.
Mr. Smith pulled the nearby chair toward the bed and sat down, while the other two men remained standing behind him.
Kael placed Lyra’s phone on the side of the bed and leaned back slightly.
"Alright."
His eyes narrowed.
"Ask your questions."
