Kael’s eyes narrowed as he focused on the monk standing several dozen meters away. The man’s serene expression hadn’t changed since the beginning of the trial, and despite the pressure surrounding him, he remained completely still, his hands resting loosely at his sides. Kael’s gaze sharpened as he activated Eye of Judgment.

A familiar sensation spread through his eyes.

For a brief moment, the world seemed to become clearer as the skill attempted to pierce through the monk’s existence and reveal his information.

Then it happened.

A strange force suddenly collided with the probing power of Eye of Judgment, causing it to immediately crumble. Kael was astonished.

"What?"

He immediately activated Eye of Judgment again.

Nothing.

The same invisible resistance appeared, forcibly repelling the skill before it could gather enough information to reveal anything about the monk.

Kael stared at him in disbelief.

The only person he had ever encountered who could completely repel Eye of Judgment was his mother. He had never expected to encounter someone else capable of doing the same.

Kael tightened his fist. Just from the ability to repel the Eye of Judgment’s probing, it was clear this person wasn’t normal. He could already feel the pressure building. This fight wasn’t going to be easy, that much was already clear.

Just then, the monk suddenly turned toward him.

His eyes closed.

Yet Kael could somehow feel the man’s attention settling directly upon him, as though those closed eyes weren’t obstructing his vision in the slightest.

The monk slowly brought his palms together.

"Amitabha, Benefactor."

His voice carried a strange warmth. It was calm and gentle, almost soothing, as though the monk were genuinely trying to defuse the situation rather than preparing to fight someone to the death.

"This humble monk apologizes for the intrusion, but the Tower’s grace upon this floor is needed elsewhere. My temple is starving, and the mountain’s heart grows cold."

There was genuine sorrow in his voice when he said the last part, as though the thought of what he was about to do truly pained him.

"Please forgive this monk for what he must do."

Kael’s eye twitched.

Then his blood boiled.

"Fuck you."

The monk remained silent.

"What does your temple’s condition have to do with me?" Kael’s voice hardened as his killing intent began to rise. "You invaded the floor of someone more than sixty floors beneath you, and you’re standing there talking like you’re the righteous one."

The monk’s expression didn’t change.

"Good and evil are merely fables created by mortal hearts. Only those who walk the Way of the Great Buddha and seek cleansing can truly be considered pure."

His head tilted slightly toward Kael.

"You, dear Benefactor, carry countless weights of blood and death upon your shoulders."

The monk’s voice remained gentle.

"Allow this humble one to cleanse you. I harbor no evil thoughts toward you, my dear Benefactor. The Dharma is my witness."

Kael stared at him.

"Fuck you and your Dharma."

His killing intent surged.

"Sounds like nothing more than some bullshit excuse you use to clear your conscience after all the atrocities you and your bald-headed friends commit."

For the first time, something changed.

The monk’s fingers tightened slightly against one another.

His closed eyes narrowed.

"Wash your mouth, ignorant one."

The warmth in his voice disappeared.

"I even used the might of a Lucky Charm offered by one of my greatest seniors to initiate this trial."

The monk’s head lifted.

"This is fate."

His voice became colder.

"Your fate."

He slowly separated his palms.

"Accept it."

Kael’s expression darkened.

"Fuck you, your great senior, and your fate."

He didn’t waste another second.

His body exploded forward.

The ground beneath his feet shattered as Kael accelerated, his eyes blazing with pure rage and killing intent. The distance between them vanished almost instantly, his fist already moving as he prepared to tear through the monk’s defenses.

Then a sense of dread descended upon him.

It was sudden.

Instinctive.

Every cell in Kael’s body screamed danger.

His expression changed immediately.

The rage didn’t disappear, but his instincts took control before his mind could even process what was happening.

The monk moved.

His palm pressed forward.

There was no grand motion behind it. No dramatic preparation. Just a simple palm strike aimed directly at Kael’s center mass.

Yet Kael’s pupils contracted as he felt the power behind the seemingly casual strike. He most definitely couldn’t tank that.

Without hesitation, his body responded before the thought had even fully formed. Kael pivoted sharply on his right foot, twisting his torso as the monk’s palm whistled past his ribs with only a few centimeters to spare.

The instant the attack passed, Kael retaliated.

Earth energy surged through his finger before rapidly compressing into a single point. The energy became dense enough to give the tip of his finger the sharpness of a weapon, the force concentrated entirely into a tiny area.

Kael thrust forward.

The attack was aimed directly at the monk’s throat.

The monk reacted immediately.

His body swayed.

Barely a few inches.

That was all it took.

Kael’s finger pierced through empty air as the monk’s head tilted slightly to the left, allowing the attack to pass harmlessly beside his throat.

At the same time, the monk’s other hand snapped upward.

His elbow came toward Kael’s jaw with frightening speed.

Kael’s forearm rose instantly.

BANG!

The impact rang through his entire skeleton.

Kael’s body shifted backward half a step as the force traveled from his forearm through his shoulder and into the rest of his body.

His eyes widened.

That strike was powerful.

Extremely powerful.

And the monk hadn’t even looked as though he had put his full strength behind it.

Worse, it was extremely fast.

Yet Kael didn’t retreat.

Instead, he dropped his center of gravity and swept his leg outward.

Earth energy immediately hardened his shin, gathering along its edge until it formed something resembling an axe blade. The reinforced limb tore toward the monk’s ankle with enough force to slice through flesh and bone in a single strike.

The monk saw it coming.

His foot touched the ground once.

Then he hopped backward.

Light.

Almost weightless.

His body drifted through the air with an ease that looked completely out of place, as if he were a light feather carried by the wind rather than a full-grown man.

Kael’s hardened shin swept through empty space, missing entirely.

The momentum of the monk’s retreat caused his robes to shift.

A flash of gold caught Kael’s eyes.

His brows furrowed.

Beneath the saffron-colored patch around the monk’s collar was a small talisman etched with intricate golden markings. It was partially hidden beneath the robe, but its surface was glowing with a faint golden radiance that pulsed gently against the monk’s chest.

Kael’s gaze locked onto it.

His expression became thoughtful.

"Is that the Lucky Charm he was talking about?"

The monk had specifically mentioned using a Lucky Charm offered by one of his seniors to initiate the invasion.

If that thing had really been responsible for initiating this trial, then there was a good chance it wasn’t merely some decorative ornament.

And if it was protecting the monk in some way, Kael needed to find out exactly how it works
