"Fuck."

Kael stared at the crimson notification hovering before him, his expression darkening as he read the words again, a floor invasion. The instruction to prepare to defend himself was enough to make it obvious that whatever was coming wasn’t going to be pleasant.

He was still in relatively good physical condition after the battle, but his mana reserves were already sitting at roughly half their original capacity.

Several of his abilities were also unavailable.

Shadow Between Steps had only three uses remaining, and three of his Void Echoes had already been destroyed, so entering another fight in this condition would already place him at a considerable disadvantage.

Unfortunately, the Tower didn’t seem particularly interested in his concerns.

The gloomy bone-filled yard suddenly lit up.

A brilliant golden radiance descended from above, flooding the entire area with warm light. Against the crimson sky and the countless bones scattered throughout the battlefield, the sight should have been almost heavenly.

For Kael, however, it felt like the exact opposite. His eyes immediately locked onto the source of the light, his body instinctively tensing as he watched the golden radiance gather into a single point.

The light slowly began to dissipate.

A figure emerged from within it.

Kael’s eyes narrowed.

The newcomer was a small, compact man with a shaved head and a remarkably serene face. He wore charcoal-colored robes with saffron-colored patches around the shoulders, while several strings of prayer beads were wrapped around his left wrist.

He looked like a monk.

Kael stared at him for several seconds.

To be honest, this wasn’t what he had expected when the Tower announced an invader.

He had imagined someone rugged and battle-worn, perhaps a scarred veteran covered in equipment and carrying the unmistakable presence of someone who had spent years fighting their way through the Tower. Instead, the man standing before him looked like the kind of trusted adult children would happily accept candy from without a second thought.

The monk simply stood there.

Calm.

Peaceful.

Almost harmless.

That somehow made Kael even more uncomfortable.

Before he could examine the man further, another notification appeared before his eyes.

[Floor Invasion has been initiated.]

[Assessing overall situation...]

Kael’s attention immediately returned to the screen.

[It has been detected that the Invader is more than 10 Floors above the Invaded.]

Kael’s eyebrow twitched.

[It has been detected that the Invader is more than 20 Floors above the Invaded.]

His expression changed.

"How’s that even fair?"

He wasn’t stupid enough to think of himself as an ordinary challenger. His strength was already far beyond what someone on his current floor should possess, and he had repeatedly proven capable of defeating opponents who should have been considerably stronger than himself.

But there was a difference between being an irregular and fighting someone who was several floors ahead of you.

Ten floors was already troublesome.

Twenty was ridiculous.

Yet the notification continued.

[It has been detected that the Invader is more than 30 Floors above the Invaded.]

Kael’s face slowly stiffened.

[It has been detected that the Invader is more than 40 Floors above the Invaded.]

His eyes widened slightly.

[It has been detected that the Invader is more than 50 Floors above the Invaded.]

The corner of Kael’s mouth twitched.

"Surely that’s enough."

The notification ignored him.

[It has been detected that the Invader is more than 60 Floors above the Invaded.]

Kael went completely silent.

Then another line appeared.

[It has been detected that the Invader is under 70 Floors above the Invaded.]

Kael stared at the screen.

Under seventy floors.

His mind went blank for a moment as he processed the implications.

He was currently on Floor 20.

That meant the man standing before him could potentially be somewhere beyond Floor 80.

"That’s ridiculous."

There wasn’t even enough emotion in his voice to make it sound like a complaint anymore.

This wasn’t a difficult fight.

This was a joke.

Kael’s gaze shifted toward the monk.

The man still hadn’t moved.

If this person had truly reached a floor somewhere beyond eighty, then he had survived and conquered a massive portion of the Tower. And if he was climbing through Hell Difficulty as well, then his achievements became even more absurd. Hell Difficulty wasn’t something just anyone could casually clear.

Someone capable of reaching that height had to be exceptional.

Unique, perhaps.

Kael couldn’t exactly claim that his own talent was ordinary.

Far from it.

But there was no guarantee that he was the only person in the Tower possessing an absurd ability. There could be others just as monstrous as him.

And judging by the man’s appearance, he didn’t look particularly old either.

That meant he probably hadn’t spent decades climbing the Tower.

Kael’s expression became increasingly troubled.

This was completely unfair. What was he even supposed to do exactly?

Then the notification screen flickered.

[Error.]

[Error.]

[Irregularity detected.]

[Initiating correction...]

Kael blinked.

His eyes immediately brightened.

"Finally."

Perhaps the Tower had realized how absurd the situation was.

Perhaps it would correct the difference in power.

Perhaps it would simply cancel the invasion.

That would be reasonable.

For once, the Tower was actually being reasonable.

[Correction failed.]

Kael’s expression froze.

A second notification appeared before he could even react.

[Initiating Trial.]

His brief hope disappeared.

[INVASION TRIAL]

[Mission: Combat]

[Objective: Defeat your opponent to complete the Trial.]

[The Trial will only be deemed complete when one of the participants is dead.]

[Judgment: It has been detected that the Invader greatly outmatches the Invaded by more than 60 Floors.]

[Issuing Judgment.]

[The Invaded Compensation: All energy restored, body returned to full health, all skill cooldowns reset.]

[The Invader’s Punishment: The Invader receives a 35% reduction to Strength. The reduction applies to physical strength, magical strength, and all related forms of offensive power.]

Kael remained still.

Then he felt it.

A tremendous surge of energy rushed through his body.

The exhaustion accumulated from the previous battle vanished almost instantly. His depleted mana surged back to its peak, his body returned to perfect condition, and the skills that had been locked behind cooldowns became available once again.

Even the Void Echoes he had lost were restored.

Kael clenched his fist.

The sensation was excellent.

The compensation was actually quite generous.

Then, his eyes shifted toward the other half of the judgment.

Thirty-five percent.

Kael looked at the monk.

Then back at the notification.

"Only thirty-five percent?"

His expression twitched.

The man was potentially more than sixty floors above him.

Even with a thirty-five percent reduction to his strength, how much stronger was he still going to be?

Kael didn’t even want to calculate it.

Where was the fairness in that?

Still, he didn’t bother complaining.

It wasn’t as though the Tower would listen.

The Trial had already been established. The rules had already been determined. Whether Kael thought they were fair or not changed absolutely nothing.

One of them had to die.

Kael slowly tightened his fist as his gaze settled on the serene monk standing across the battlefield. He needed to find a way to win this battle.
