Chapter 1: The Most Ordinary Day

Leon let out a quiet sigh as he rested his chin on his palm, absentmindedly watching the clouds drift past the classroom window.

Another Monday.

Another painfully ordinary day.

The classroom buzzed with conversation as students chatted in small groups before their homeroom teacher arrived. Some were rushing to finish homework, others were scrolling through social media, while a few had somehow turned the back row into an unofficial marketplace for snacks.

None of it caught Leon’s interest.

"Eighteen..." He muttered the number under his breath.

One more month. Just one more month until his eighteenth birthday.

His best friend, Ryan, looked up from his phone and frowned. "You’ve been saying that all morning. Is there something magical about turning eighteen?"

Leon didn’t even bother looking at him. "It marks the beginning of my freedom."

"...You say that like you’ve been imprisoned."

"I have."

Ryan raised an eyebrow. "Oh?"

Leon nodded with complete seriousness. "People keep saying I’m too young."

Ryan stared at him for several seconds before realizing exactly where this conversation was heading. "...Please don’t."

Leon ignored the warning. "I’ve already accepted that girls my age aren’t my type."

"There it is."

"I prefer women who have their lives together." Leon spoke with great emotion.

Ryan pinched the bridge of his nose. "Older women?"

"Exactly."

"You’ve had this preference since middle school."

"It has only matured with time."

Ryan couldn’t even argue with that. The worst part wasn’t Leon’s unusual taste. It was how sincere he was. He never made crude jokes. Never bragged. Never acted like a pervert around women. He simply spoke about mature women with the same admiration someone else might reserve for movie stars or famous athletes.

Ryan had long since given up trying to understand it. "You really are hopeless."

"I prefer to be dedicated."

Ryan snorted. "I’ll pray for your future."

Leon chuckled before glancing around the classroom.

Several girls sat near the windows chatting excitedly about an upcoming school festival. Others were discussing university entrance exams.

The boys, meanwhile, had somehow begun arguing over who the prettiest girl in school was.

"No contest," One declared confidently. "Student Council President."

"Dude, she’s way out of everyone’s league."

"The volleyball captain is better."

"What? You have terrible taste."

Within moments, half the class had joined the debate. Even some of the girls started throwing in their own opinions.

Leon simply smiled to himself.

Ryan noticed. "You’re not joining?"

"I don’t really have an opinion."

"Seriously?"

"I mean..." Leon shrugged. "They’re all nice."

Ryan stared. "...That’s it?"

"They’re classmates."

"You’ve become enlightened."

"I just don’t see them that way."

Ryan laughed. "I swear you’re one of the weirdest people I’ve ever met."

Before Leon could respond, the classroom door slid open.

Everyone instinctively returned to their seats. Only to collectively groan. It wasn’t their teacher. Just another student from a neighboring class delivering attendance sheets.

False alarm.

The room instantly became noisy again.

Leon leaned back in his chair, letting the chatter wash over him. It was strangely comforting. The familiar classroom.

His classmates laughing. Ryan complaining about homework. It was the kind of ordinary day people rarely appreciated until it disappeared.

None of them knew that this would be the last normal morning of their lives.

A loud gasp echoed from somewhere near the windows.

"Hey..." Someone stood. "What is that?"

Leon lazily turned toward the window.

At first, he saw nothing unusual. Just blue skies stretching endlessly overhead.

Then—a tiny golden light appeared in the distance.

"It looks like a shooting star."

"...During the day?"

More students gathered near the windows.

The light grew larger. And larger.

Ryan frowned. "...Wait."

The golden object wasn’t moving across the horizon. It was falling. Straight toward the city.

A nervous laugh spread through the classroom.

"No way."

"That’s impossible."

"It’ll land somewhere else."

"It has to."

The object rapidly expanded until it was impossible to mistake for anything else.

A meteor. Its blazing golden tail split the sky apart like a burning sword.

The classroom gradually fell silent.

Outside, students flooded into the school courtyard. Teachers shouted for everyone to remain calm. Some were already dialing emergency services.

The ground trembled. A low rumble rolled across the city.

Ryan grabbed Leon’s arm. "We should go."

Leon nodded.

For the first time that morning... He felt genuinely afraid.

The entire class rushed toward the door.

Then—

The meteor struck. Or at least... It should have.

Instead of an explosion, an overwhelming pillar of golden light erupted from somewhere beyond the school.

The entire world froze.

Every sound disappeared.

Every movement stopped.

Even the trembling ground became eerily still.

"What..." Leon looked around in confusion.

Golden particles drifted through the classroom like glowing snowflakes.

The desks. The walls. Even the ceiling. Everything began dissolving into streams of light.

Students screamed. Someone tried opening the classroom door. It dissolved beneath their hands.

"What is happening?!" Ryan shouted.

"I don’t know!" Leon reached toward him.

Before either of them could move another step, an intricate golden magic circle spread beneath every student’s feet.

Symbols unlike any language Leon had ever seen rotated along its edge.

One ring became two. Two became five. The air itself shimmered.

An indescribable force wrapped around Leon’s body.

Weightless. Warm. Comforting. Yet terrifying.

The classroom disappeared. The school vanished. The city faded into countless fragments of light.

Leon felt himself falling through endless darkness. Voices echoed all around him.

Some cried. Some screamed. Others called out the names of friends and family.

Then...Everything went black.

***

"...Recruit." A stern voice pierced the silence. "Recruit."

Leon’s eyes slowly opened. Cold stone greeted his vision. He blinked several times before pushing himself upright. "...Where..."

The classroom was gone. Instead, he found himself standing inside what looked like a medieval barracks.

Rows of weapon racks lined the walls. Wooden training dummies filled one side of the room. Men and women dressed in chainmail armor stood at attention.

Every one of them looked concentrated unlike him.

A towering man with a scar running across his left eye walked down the line, his heavy boots echoing against the stone floor. He wore polished steel armor beneath a crimson cloak. The badge on his chest depicted a silver tower crossed by a spear.

When the man reached Leon, he stopped. "You finally awake?"

Leon instinctively nodded. "...Yes?"

The man looked him up and down before tossing something toward him.

Leon barely caught it.

A folded blue uniform. Leather armor. A short sword. And a wooden badge engraved with a city wall.

The commander spoke in a firm, emotionless voice. "Congratulations."

Leon frowned. "For what?"

"You’ve been assigned your role."

A translucent screen suddenly appeared before Leon’s eyes.

[Identity Registered

Name: Leon

Age: 18

Faction: Ravellion Empire

Occupation: City Guard (Undergoing) ]

Leon stared at the floating screen.

His mind went blank. ’...What?’

The commander folded his arms. "Orientation begins in ten minutes, recruit. Try not to die during your first task."

Without another word, the man turned and walked away.

Leon remained frozen where he stood, clutching the unfamiliar uniform.

One question echoed endlessly in his mind.

"...Where the hell am I?"
