Leon stood frozen, looking at everything around him dumbfounded. Especially at the blue screen before him.
’Am I inside a game?’ This was the only thing Leon could come up with.
It only became more convincing through the visuals presented by the other recruits like him. Some were wearing knight armor, the sunlight glistening off their polished armor. Some were carrying staff, mana swirling around the gems. Some were polishing their spears, while others were checking their bowstrings.
"Who is this guy? Why didn’t he bring his own armor and weapon?"
"Might be some idiot who is desperate for money. If anyone wants, they can already say their goodbyes to him."
"Hmph, who would talk to an idiot? Let him die."
Leon wore the blue uniform and armor while listening to the snarky comments. From their words, he could conclude that the City Guard position was highly dangerous.
Leon had to begin considering everything now, as he had gradually started coming to terms with the fact that he had been transported to another world—a fantasy world, to speak of.
He could cope with believing that he was on a movie set, but the character interface flashing before his eyes forced him to think otherwise.
The commander who had left earlier came back. Now, he had stacks of paper in his hand.
"Everyone! Stand in formation!"
The recruits’ faces immediately turned solemn as they formed four-by-four rows. Leon clumsily followed them and found a vacant spot.
Unfortunately, it was in the front center, directly facing the commander’s ferocious face.
The commander saw Leon’s performance and became extremely disappointed, but now was not the time to show it.
"As you already know, I am Commander Aldric Vayne, the Iron Shield of Asterhold. Today, I will be handing out the orientation tasks. Those who successfully complete them can join the City Guard."
Afterward, Commander Aldric Vayne handed out the orientation quests to each of the recruits.
Some frowned. Some chuckled. And some even shed tears after reading their orientation quests.
On the other hand, after Leon got his hands on his orientation quest, a game-like interface appeared before his eyes.

Leon’s face darkened after seeing the quest.
He had just arrived in this world, and he was getting a task that required him to catch a market thief in three days!
Was this something a recruit could do?
He felt Commander Aldric Veyne was purposely making it difficult for him so that he would fail to become a City Guard.
"Now, what are you all standing here for? Go and complete your tasks!" Commander Aldric Veyne sternly shouted before leaving the recruits.
Everyone left the barracks, with Leon following behind them, looking around curiously.
Just as he set foot outside the barracks, Leon felt the whole world press down on him. The unfamiliarity and unknown were squeezing his heart.
’No, I have to understand this world first!’ Leon straightened his resolve.
Grabbing the shoulder of a fellow recruit who was passing by, he asked, "Brother, where is the library?"
"Huh?" The recruit was dumbfounded by this question.
As a resident of the Asterhold District in the capital, who didn’t know where the biggest library of their district was? "Are you new here?"
"Yes, brother. I want to become more familiar with this place, so that I can increase my chance of completing the quest."
The recruit showed admiration upon hearing that. He didn’t expect there to be such a calm-headed person among their batch. "Brother, follow me. I will show you the library and study with you too."
"Oh, brother, thank you so much." Leon hugged the recruit’s shoulder with enthusiasm. "After I become a City Guard, I will throw a party just between us!"
"Brother, thank you in advance then." The recruit laughed as he led Leon toward the library. "Also, what is your name, brother?"
"My name is Leon Ashborne!" Leon proclaimed loudly, and of course, the last name was made up.
It was one of the names of a protagonist from an RPG. Finding the opportunity to finally use it, he grasped it immediately.
"Wow, that is a powerful noble name. Are you perhaps a noble or a fallen noble?" the recruit exclaimed as the name Ashborne reminded him of the nobles.
"Indeed, I am a fallen noble." Leon shook his head in dismay, as if he was thinking of his dark days. Then he asked in return, "Brother, what about you? What should I call you?"
"Me? You can call me Pooland."
Pft!
Leon almost spat out laughing upon hearing that name. So, he turned his head and started fake coughing.
"Brother, what happened? Are you sick?" Pooland asked with concern, seeing his new brother coughing like this. Diseases were deadly for mortals, so he was a bit worried about Leon.
Fortunately, Leon regained his composure and effortlessly explained. "It’s nothing, Pooland. I have an innate problem where I randomly cough. You don’t know how frustrating this coughing has become to me. No girl approaches me because of this."
"Oh." Pooland sympathetically patted Leon’s shoulder. He didn’t expect Leon’s life would be so miserable. "Anyway, Pooland. If you don’t mind, can you tell me who gave you such an epic name?"
Leon side-eyed him, very curious about this.
"This was given to me by my mother-in-law when I was born," Pooland proudly said.
"Your... your mother-in-law? Are you already married?" Leon asked in shock.
"Yes. I married my childhood friend, who was also my neighbor. But Leon, why are you acting shocked? We are already past the age of fifteen. We should be married by now. You know? Many of my friends have married their second wife, and some even have three or four."
Pooland spoke in amazement, which led to Leon’s eyes opening with pure wisdom.
"..."
’Wait a damn minute. Did he just say second wife? Three or four wives?!’ Leon suddenly stopped walking.
The fantasy world he’d been imagining was already starting to look much more interesting.
