The next day.
Leon and Pooland walked through the streets under their watch. They assured and calmed the panicked hearts of every citizen.
However, they didn’t entirely spill the real incident. They told the simple fabricated story of an enemy race being caught in the hands of superiors.
What truly happened was told in the morning assembly by the commander, who had a darkened face.
Apparently, the man in the sleeping robe was from a wealthy merchant family. Unlike every night, when he would spend time in the bed of flowers in the red-light district, he arrived home quickly.
Right at that moment, he sensed an unusual magic in the hallway where his children lived. In panic, he rushed forth and caught the sight of the man in a dark cloak tying his children together.
Afterward was the scene everyone in the capital saw.
As for whether that kidnapper was caught or not, it was confidential information. However, this news has entered the ears of the emperor, and he is very angry.
"Of course, he would be angry. Having so many powerful employees in the capital, stuff like this happened." Leon shook his head as he headed to the flower shop of that old lady. He assumed it would take the afternoon before he could notify every single citizen.
However, Leon frowned, looking at the packed entrance of the flower shop. ’Why are there so many people? Did the old lady find a rare flower to sell?’
With confusion written in his face, he entered the shop amidst the packed crowd, using his identity. "Make way, make way; the city guard is here."
Hearing the word "city guard," the crowd subconsciously made a way for him to wiggle in.
Going through them, Leon heard a few whispers.
"Do you think they will try to search?"
"I do not know. This reeks of the previous incident. You know what happened that time, right?"
"It looks like we have to soothe Grandma Ling Ling silently."
Leon felt he had stumbled upon a huge, secretive incident. He quickly arrived at the front and saw the old lady, Grandma Ling Ling, the flower shop owner, speaking anxiously.
"Quick. Call the city guards! We have to find my grandchildren."
"Mother, I think we should...give it a rest." A middle-aged man said with a sigh. The women and men beside him nodded their heads, agreeing.
Grandma Ling Ling’s eyes widened in utter shock. "What...what did you say!? Your son and daughter are missing. You should be pouring your heart out to find them. Instead, you are backing out. How...how did I give birth to you all?!"
Grandma Ling Ling’s children bowed their heads in shame. They too wanted to find their children, but they still remembered what happened to those who previously tried their best to search for their children—almost everyone was missing along with their children to this day.
They understood there was a dark malice hidden deep in this district.
Grandma Ling Ling also saw and heard of this, but that didn’t matter to her. Even if the earth were torn asunder, a parent should always have their hand on their children’s shoulder.
"Grandma Ling Ling, what happened?" Leon walked forward, coming close to Grandma Ling Ling.
Leon had seen and heard their conversation. He concluded it was a missing children case, possibly a kidnapping. So he had to show himself, or she might pass out in anxiety and sadness.
"Leon, you are here." As she found a pillar of support, Grandma Ling Ling hurried ahead and grabbed Leon’s arm. "Quick, find my grandchildren. They have gone. We can’t find them anywhere."
"I will, Grandma Ling Ling. So, take deep breaths and calm down first." Leon patted her hand and asked calmly. "But can you tell me what actually happened?"
Grandma Ling Ling took deep breaths, just as Leon told her. She believed these two new city guards wholeheartedly. They have always helped her even if the request may be small yet arduous. They never complained to her or showed grievance toward her. She has lived for many years and seen many faces, so a little bit of interaction was all she needed to find the truth of a person.
Then she collected what happened in the morning and blurted out to Leon. "Last night, when that explosion happened, my little grandchildren were very scared. In fright they rushed toward me and stayed on my bed. To calm them down, I told them an old heroic epic of how no matter the adversary, the good will always prevail over the evil. Listening to it, they slept soundly by my side."
"Then...then after I woke up. They were gone. In panic, I thought last night was my imagination and they were sleeping inside their rooms. But when I went inside their room, they were still not there. I searched every place and house they played, but still they were not there." Grandma Ling Ling began to shed tears.
She looked up to Leon and pleaded. "Please, find them. I can’t bear to lose them."
"I promise I will." Leon assured her, grasping her hands. He understood she was feeling extreme guilt. Her beloved grandchildren disappeared right under her nose, so she probably was probably it was her fault.
"Thank you." Grandma Ling Ling cried while asking. "Do you need anything else? I can help you with everything."
"No need." Leon smiled before walking. "Grandman Ling Ling, just wait for your grandchildren."
Watching Leon’s figure leaving, Grandma Ling Ling’s children whispered to themselves.
"Is this the new city guard in charge of our street?"
"Yes, I heard they are very humble and always help anyone. Most of the troublesome work is done by them."
"Hmph, still too young. They have not seen what is under these streets. Give them some time, and they will go back cowering inside their barracks."
"Yea. The previous one warned us about this case himself. After that day, he was gone as if he didn’t exist to begin with."
