The man acted as if he had not heard Jackson’s words at all and continued his own narrative.
"My All Heaven Store sells everything. Here, I got something specially chosen for you, since you looked like someone who readily takes risks every day..."
"Here’s life insurance. In case you were to meet an untimely death, your family would not have to suffer..."
Jackson’s lips twitched instantly when he heard the last sentence.
"What is it, old man? Do you want me to die...?"
"Oh, the heavens above, speak only good words, young hunter. Why would I want my customer to die? Every day I wish long life for my customers."
Jackson’s ears twitched as he noticed something, and he shouted back,
"But I am not your customer."
"Yeah, that’s why, young hunter. You better hurry and purchase your first item from my All Heaven Store, and rest assured, for your first purchase I will give you the best discount..."
The two argued back and forth. In the end, Jackson grew frustrated. He did not want to say a single word anymore and simply turned to leave. However, just as he had taken the first step, a possible thought flashed through his mind.
He turned back to the All Heaven merchant and asked,
"You mentioned something about buying. What can you pay me for these beast cores?"
Saying those words, he took out a Blue-Horned Deer beast core from his storage pouch.
The Blue-Horned Deer beast core was not very large, only the size of a marble. From time to time, the core would glow crimson red as the trapped mana tried to escape into the atmosphere.
The merchant, who was about to walk away in resignation, quickly became interested and eagerly took the Blue-Horned Deer core from Jackson’s hands.
While looking at it intently, he murmured in a low voice,
"Hm... low-grade core, zero signs of damage."
By the end of those words, the merchant’s eyes flashed with slight surprise. The way he looked at Jackson changed slightly. Normally, during combat, the chances of a beast core getting damaged were incredibly high. The fact that Jackson was able to kill the monster and extract the core without damaging it spoke about just how skilled he was, and in the merchant’s eyes, skill deserved respect.
Jackson also noticed the change in the merchant’s expression and his face turned a slight shade of red. Feeling slightly embarrassed, he spoke the truth.
"This was just luck."
The words Jackson spoke to excuse himself caused the merchant’s admiration to grow even further.
"Hm, what a fun hunter. Not only talented, but humble as well."
"Customer, your behavior has impressed me. Allow me to introduce myself. The name is Aron. It is a pleasure meeting you..."
"Yeah, the pleasure is mine..."
Jackson also went along. After a line of superficial talk, his gaze turned upward. The sun was about to set.
Damn, it’s too late. I need to get home before dinner, otherwise they’ll start to worry.
Thinking of his mother and younger sister waiting for him at home, Jackson knew he had to hurry.
Aron sensed his urgency and quoted a price.
"For you only, I will offer an exclusive buying price of twenty-five mana stones each."
Huh?!
For a moment, Jackson thought he had misheard. Twenty-five mana stones? Usually, these red-colored grade beast cores only sold for roughly twenty or so mana stones.
Yet here this man was offering him a full five stones extra.
Jackson did not know what to say.
Maybe seeing Jackson’s reaction or for some other reason, Aron smiled.
"My All Heaven Store is not as shady as those corporate stores. The fair value of these beast cores is only twenty-five stones. Don’t think too much, just accept them..."
"Would you like to accept the payment in cash...?"
Just as Aron was continuing, Jackson took a deep breath and took out the other five beast cores. He did not want to miss out on such a good deal.
While taking them out, he carefully calculated.
A single beast core for twenty-five mana stones, so the six should net me a total of a full 150 mana stones...
Aron also stopped whatever he was about to say and looked at the newly presented five monster cores. He quickly inspected them, and a stunned look appeared on his face.
"Perfect. All five of them are at perfect quality..."
If it had been only one, Aron could have pinned it on luck. But now every single beast core was in perfect condition. Suddenly, the way he looked at Jackson changed. The young hunter in his eyes had been shrouded in a mysterious fog that he could not see beyond.
Aron only came out of this dazed state when Jackson urged him.
"Mr. Merchant, please hurry. My family is waiting for me at home..."
Hearing those words, Aron coughed and pocketed the six beast cores. Then he said,
"How would you like me to pay? Cash, or transfer the funds to your hunter license?"
"Hunter license...?"
Jackson was surprised hearing those words. He was still a rookie fresh out of school. How could he have something like a hunter license? So he chose to accept the payment in cash.
Aron respected his wish and handed him a storage pouch filled with mana stones. Aron weighed them, and after feeling satisfied, he quickly accepted the payment. The transaction was complete.
"Pleasure doing business with you, customer."
"In the future, if you need anything, you can always find me here..."
After exchanging some pleasantries, the two parted ways. Aron left to look for his next customer, while on the other hand Jackson moved carefully, holding the pouch in his hands, with a slight smile on his face.
I managed to earn the month’s rent in just one day...
Now that he was alone, huge waves of emotion surged in Jackson’s heart. In just one day, his family had been desperate for merely fifty mana stones, and now after just one day of hunting he had managed to earn three times that amount.
Jackson was now finally starting to understand why everyone wanted to risk their lives outside.
Maybe he had been too cautious or something else, but Jackson seemed to realize that in hunting these six Blue-Horned Deer, he had nearly lost his life three times.
Moreover, what had taken him to accomplish was, for other hunters, the result of days of meticulous planning and teamwork.
Of course, Jackson was not the one to pay attention to those thoughts. He looked at the time and realized he still had half an hour left.
"Tomorrow I should go to the forest early. I should use this time to buy a few essential items..."
Today had been successful. Although he had killed six Blue-Horned Deer, his final encounter with the demonic hunter made him realize how easily a strong opponent could crush him.
He had to prepare accordingly to face such an enemy.
