This masked man was a professional demonic hunter, one who targeted young awakened like Jackson full-time. It did not matter how careful Jackson had been in his actions; his feat of killing six Blue-Horned Deer had not gone unnoticed. It had been sensed clearly by the masked hunter.
At this moment, Jackson was blaming his luck in reality. Even if it was not this demonic hunter, there might be someone else coming for his neck.
For a moment, the masked man ignored Jackson’s struggle and raised his head toward the sky. The next moment, the look in his eyes sharpened.
"Hmmm... these hawks are already here..." A hoarse voice, like a sheet of cold glass sliding against another, echoed through the surroundings.
After saying those words, his gaze once again turned to Jackson’s immobilized figure. His eyes were as cold and indifferent as before — a gaze one might use when looking at an insect struggling beneath one’s feet, the way humans looked at something taking away years of hard work.
...
Jackson felt the changes in the surroundings, and rage surged in his heart. Just as he was about to increase the masked hunter’s mana, he suddenly froze.
Both of my hands are tied. I can’t move an inch. How am I supposed to use the golden brush and raise the enemy’s stats...?
This thought had barely occurred to him when the golden brush moved according to his will, hovering over the masked figure’s status window. Jackson looked at the scene and realized what was happening.
He could control the golden brush with his mind alone.
Feeling ecstatic, he tried to increase the masked man’s mana all the way to twenty, intending to make him explode in a shower of blood. The number changed, but he felt nothing.
It didn’t work...
Jackson’s heart chilled as this realization popped into his mind. It seemed there was a limit to the golden brush’s ability. If he could increase the stats of any being at will, it would be too broken. Maybe the golden brush’s ability was tied to his own strength.
Jackson came to this conclusion quickly. After all, it was his awakened talent.
Just at this moment, he felt the chains tighten around his body again.
Jackson’s face turned pale.
Damn, this is so painful...
He gritted his teeth and tried to rise, but the force behind the chains was too strong and too overwhelming. Loud cracking sounds came from his body as the bones were pushed to their limits. Where the black chains directly made contact with his body, blood vessels had already ruptured due to the intense blood pressure. Crimson blood flowed out freely, and Jackson felt his vision spinning as the world around him turned hazy.
Feeling the severity of the situation he was in, Jackson gritted his teeth. In this final moment of life and death, his thoughts surged at lightning speed.
For a moment, his gaze drifted back to the masked figure’s status window. In the span of just a fraction of a second, he erased the masked figure’s talent and kind of darkness. Almost instantly, the words appeared again. This time, Jackson did not stop.
If he could not raise the masked man’s stats, then the chances of erasing the talent were even slimmer. He ignored the pain and tried something else.
There was not enough time to think. Just as the pain was about to become unbearable, and his consciousness was almost on the verge of slipping away, the golden brush moved again and two new words were added to the masked man’s talent.
To his relief, this time the words did not vanish but stayed. Just as Jackson thought he had finally succeeded, the newly added words showed signs of disappearing.

However, it was still more than enough. Although what he had done might not last for long, it could give him enough time to run.
Although it looked like a lot of time had passed, from the moment the masked man first appeared to the moment the black chains tightly wrapped around Jackson’s figure, only a few seconds had passed.
Under Jackson’s eyes, for a moment, a bewildered look flashed through the masked man’s eyes. His cold and indifferent demeanor crumbled.
Jackson wanted to continue watching, but now was not the time. His condition returned to normal as he felt the black chains around him weakening. Seizing the opportunity, Jackson launched the chains back at the masked figure with full force.
A sharp clanging sound rang through the air as the chains struck the masked figure, sending him flying through the air.
Now free, Jackson did not stop to admire the spectacle but instead ran for his life.
Without pausing for even a moment, he ran as fast as his legs could carry him. Perhaps because he was in too much of a hurry, or perhaps because the black chains had damaged the storage pouch, the small deer horn fell to the ground. Jackson did not even dare stop to pick it up.
It was only when he could see the outline of the city wall in the distance that he finally stopped and looked behind him, chest rising and falling heavily, face red as a tomato.
To think I almost died on the first day...
Jackson felt completely helpless in his situation. In just a single day outside the city, he had nearly lost his life twice. So much for being a top student.
The surrounding hunters, attracted by his near-death state, gave him a look and then ignored him. After all, it was a common sight outside the city gate.
Newbies who did not know their limits would challenge monsters much stronger than themselves and, in the end, could not handle the situation. They would run for their lives.
Just as Jackson was calming his nerves, a hunter dressed in a neat black coat, with a pair of glasses resting on the bridge of his nose, approached him silently without making a single sound.
Jackson instinctively became guarded and looked at the approaching man with unfriendly eyes.
"What do you want?"
At this moment, he was too tired to deal with anything. It would be better if this stranger did not want to waste his time.
"Young man, don’t be in a hurry. You seem like a young and hardworking lad..."
The man was well-spoken, quickly trying to warm up to Jackson. However, for him, Jackson’s face fell. Noticing this, the man hurriedly corrected himself.
"I am a representative from All Heaven Store. You look like someone who has goodies to sell, or perhaps you want to buy something? I will gladly help you..."
"All Heaven Store... never heard of it..."
