Mysteries of spiritual force and mana could never be fully understood.
While spiritual force kept mana in check, if it was pushed too much, too fast, the damage it caused was no less severe than mana going out of control. As such, for an awakener, it was very important to keep both primary attributes in harmony. If one overpowered the other, the delicate balance could easily be harmed.
When teachers used to teach this topic back in school, Jackson had simply shrugged his shoulders, thinking they were exaggerating. But only now, when he had brushed shoulders with death, did he realize how stupid he had been. If it were not for the visualization technique quickly helping him exhaust his spiritual force, he might have already turned into mush.
While thinking this, his face turned slightly serious. Choosing today’s direction sharpened his thoughts.
I can’t rely on the visualization technique. Although it helps in calming down the spiritual force, it is too slow. I need another method in case of emergency...
For this problem, Jackson already had a solution in mind. However, to do that, he would need to return to the city.
With that thought in mind, he gave the abandoned cave one last look and started moving out.
With each step he took, the beast core in his storage pouch struck against each other, creating a muffled clinking sound.
Jackson cautiously moved out. It was already five in the evening, and the sun could set at any time. He needed to get back into the city as fast as possible.
With my condition, staying overnight would only be stupid...
Jackson muttered as he thought of the shortest path leading back to the city.
As an awakened, Jackson’s speed was incredible compared to a normal human. As he moved, the wind softly caressed his face. Years of training allowed him to move silently without making too much noise.
However, after moving for five minutes, Jackson’s eyes suddenly sharpened into a frown. His gaze turned toward the north, feeling a foreboding presence following him.
It’s not a monster...
Jackson muttered out loud, his heart growing cold. At first, he had thought some monster was following him, but soon he dismissed that idea. It was too quiet and too clean for a monster.
If it were a monster, Jackson would already have been attacked by now.
Jackson knew this very well. But if it was not a monster, then who was it? He did not even need to think. He already had an answer.
Outside the safe walls of the city, awakened not only had to guard against monsters, but also against their own kind.
Demonic hunter...?
Jackson muttered, his heart growing cold.
Unlike normal hunters who took risks by hunting monsters, there existed hunters who were reduced to taking risks by killing unpredictable awakened instead, targeting fellow awakened for their loot. The Hunter Organization labeled all such hunters as demonic hunters.
They were very scummy individuals.
If that was not enough, demonic hunters only targeted hunters several times weaker than them for easy kills.
Everyone that he knew about these trash members of society flashed through his mind. Without even realizing it, Jackson was instinctively pushing his body toward the utmost limits, but to his dismay, nothing happened. His speed remained the same.
Realizing this, he could not help but curse out loud.
Fuck, I should have bought a body movement technique when I had the chance...
However, no matter how much he regretted it, nothing was going to change now. Still, even though he was complaining, in reality even if he had wanted to buy such a thing, Jackson would still not have been able to afford the technique. His bank account simply did not allow it.
Just as Jackson felt the air in the surroundings change, from the corner of his eye he saw a black-masked figure appearing behind him. From the two holes in the mask, he could see two cold and indifferent eyes staring directly back at him. In those eyes there was no emotion, only calm killing intent.
Jackson’s heart skipped a beat. It was a demonic hunter without a doubt.
The next moment, the masked figure flicked its wrist, and two chains made out of pure darkness shot out. Jackson barely had time to blink when the chains were already close to him, and like living entities they quickly wrapped around his figure, leaving him immobile.
Jackson could do nothing but stare at the figure with anger in his eyes, unable to do anything. The difference in power was just too great.
Most importantly, this was not a mindless monster, but a cold, cruel predator.
Jackson’s journey seemed to have come to a dead end. However, he still did not panic, as he had yet to use his trump card.
As he continued to stare, finally the space in front of his vision rippled and a window flashed right before his eyes.
[Name - Samuel Twig]
[Age - 28]
[Talent - Chains of Darkness]
[Realm - Mortal]
[Spiritual Force - 12.1]
[Mana - 14.1]
Damn... no fucking way...
Jackson inwardly roared while looking at the status window. These were the stats of a first-sequence hunter. This son of a gun who attacked him was a second-sequence expert.
At this point, other than helplessness, Jackson felt pure fury. A second-sequence hunter attacking a first-sequence newbie — what kind of fairness was that?
Maybe it was the lack of fear in Jackson’s eyes, or something else, but for a very brief moment a slight surprise flashed through the masked attacker’s face.
The attacker was expecting Jackson to wallow in fear by now or beg for mercy, but Jackson’s silence caught him off guard.
Unaware of the masked figure’s thoughts, Jackson did not rush to use the golden brush to erase the masked figure’s talent. After all, even if he erased the masked figure’s talent, what then? Jackson was sure that even if he used all his strength, his sword might not be able to break the man’s defense.
The difference between the two was just too great.
Still, that did not mean he could give up and simply accept his death.
This time, Jackson had no choice but to ignore the imbalance and use the same tactic again.
