It had been three days since Veronica and Amanda had attempted to reach the temple, only to fail each time. Unlike the other raiders, however, they had not been driven back by the Sentinels. Some of those who had tried before them had been met with such immediate force that they had nearly lost their lives.

The two women had received no such treatment.

The knights had simply allowed them to sit near the gates, side by side, unmoving and unbothered by the guardians standing on either side. The gates of the temple, however, remained firmly closed to them.

Many have tried to talk to them and call them back. However, they remained firmly sure about their position, not swayed by a single of them.

At some point, Layena also arrived but was sent back by Veronica who knew that the Sentinels wouldn’t allow her anywhere close to the Temple.

And now, they waited. Away from the world, and quite closer to Kyle than anyone else.

"What do you think?" Amanda asked, staring into the distant sky. "What could have happened for him to refuse to see even us?"

For the past three days, they had little to do but talk. During those long hours, Veronica had told Amanda about her past and the bond that connected her to Kyle.

That was why Amanda now understood the depth of Veronica’s devotion and her unwavering determination to see him. And somehow, Amanda could feel closer to Veronica too.

"I... can’t be sure," Veronica said. "But whatever happened, it changed Kyle. It affected him deeply. I mean, he has always been anomalous, but this goes far beyond anything we could have expected from him."

Amanda nodded slowly. "Even his decision to kill his father was surprising, to tell the truth. He was never like this."

She wasn’t blaming Kyle but worried about his mindset.

What could have happened that he made such a drastic decision.

Veronica let out a quiet chuckle. "Well, it wasn’t exactly surprising to hear that he killed Ava."

Amanda’s eyes widened. "He did?"

Veronica nodded. "I heard from the base that Ava was found dead in her room a few days ago. An hour later, Mathew’s report came in. The footage showed that the accused was the same person."

Amanda stared at her in disbelief.

"Mathew was one thing. He was old and not even Special Grade. But Ava..." She hesitated. "She was a high-ranked warrior, experienced enough to go toe to toe with you. And yet..."

"Amanda, have you ever seen these things fight?" Veronica asked, gesturing toward the knights standing on either side of them.

Amanda sighed. "Only in videos," Mostly for training and preparations for possible future raids.

"I have fought them," Veronica said, her voice growing serious. "And trust me, there is no rank that can define what they are capable of. Yet beings like these knelt before Kyle."

She turned toward Amanda.

"Do you realize what that means?"

Amanda fell silent.

After a moment, she asked, "But how did he become so strong so suddenly?"

Veronica shook her head.

"I don’t know. But I have a feeling the reason behind it is... sad."

Amanda could only agree.

Just then,

KRIK.

The sharp sound of metal resonated through the air, causing both women to flinch.

The knights moved simultaneously.

Their weapons shifted as they turned toward an approaching figure, their posture becoming instantly aggressive.

Veronica and Amanda looked ahead.

A bespectacled man was walking toward them.

"Brother, wait!" Amanda sprang to her feet and called out.

Blake abruptly stopped.

Before he could say anything, Amanda rushed toward him.

"What are you doing here?"

Blake let out an exasperated huff.

"What do you think? I came here to bring you and that big idiot back home."

He looked displeased, his eyes sunken from several sleepless nights. Worry had taken its toll on him, and it showed in his unusually sharp temper.

Amanda sighed. "Well, we’ve been trying to call him out, but he refuses to show himself."

Blake looked at her for a moment before asking, "And how long are you two planning to sit there and wait? You haven’t eaten anything for the past three days, Amanda. Are you really going to starve yourself to death?"

Amanda offered him a faint smile.

"We both know Kyle wouldn’t let that happen. That’s why we’re sitting there, right before his eyes. Eventually, pity will get the better of him and he’ll come to us."

Blake stared at her, momentarily taken aback by the sheer absurdity of her reasoning.

He then glanced past Amanda toward Veronica and muttered, "I always knew she was a mad girl, but I never thought she’d actually support this crazy plan of yours."

Amanda chuckled. "She came up with it, actually."

Blake sighed, his shoulders sagging with exhaustion.

"And what if he never comes out?" he asked quietly. "What if something really has changed? What if he no longer cares about you, Amanda?"

Amanda’s faint smile remained.

"You see those medical camps just outside the barricade?"

Blake blinked in surprise before nodding. "Yes, I did. But why...?"

"They’re filled with officers who came to take us back with them. But the Sentinels pushed them back, allowing us to remain here, close to Kyle."

Blake fell silent.

His gaze shifted toward the temple, his expression growing increasingly bewildered.

"He won’t let you see him, yet he can’t bear to let you two leave either?" he muttered. "What kind of idiocy is this?"

Amanda offered him a helpless smile.

"I don’t know what it means. I only know that Kyle needs us, and we both feel the same way about him. So we’ll wait until he allows us to see him."

Blake remained silent for some time, his eyes carrying a storm of emotions he could not put into words.

Eventually, he voiced the concern weighing on him.

"Your parents are worried about you. And as for Veronica, the PSC base is in complete turmoil. Even the Vice-Commander is missing."

Amanda shook her head.

"My parents will understand. And Nightwalkers come and go every day. I’m sure Veronica will be replaced soon enough by someone far less love-struck."

Blake’s expression finally softened. All the arguments faded against her unbending devotion and love she carried for his brother.

He sighed and rested a hand gently on Amanda’s head.

"He’s lucky to have you and Veronica as his allies. He truly is."

Amanda lowered her head with a small smile.

Just then, thunder rolled across the sky.

Amanda glanced upward before turning toward the man.

"Go back, brother. It’s going to be a stormy night ahead."

With that, she turned and walked back toward the temple.

Blake remained where he was, watching the two women with undisguised concern in his eyes.

His gaze eventually drifted toward the towering temple gates.

"I’ve always cleaned up your messes," he muttered. "So why not trust your brother one more time, Kyle?"

Naturally, there was no answer.

Blake exhaled slowly before turning away.

RUMBLE.

Thunder tore across the heavens, illuminating the clouds for a fleeting moment.

It was going to be a long night.
