A Special Grade was an entirely different matter when it came to battle.

Veronica could count on one hand the number of Special Grades she had faced so far, and every encounter had unleashed enough chaos and destruction to draw others into the conflict.

She had deliberately kept the backup team uninformed about this one, knowing they would immediately rush toward the rift the moment they learned a Special Grade was present, abandoning their original objective of securing the people. She could not allow that to happen.

More importantly, she could not let them see Kyle now.

Yet, as she stood before the creature, Veronica found herself regretting that decision.

It was something born from a nightmare. Standing nearly seven feet tall, its entire body was covered in blue and black scales that seemed to defy the sunlight itself, swallowing the light rather than reflecting it.

A long, whip-like tail extended behind it, swaying with eerie freedom as though constantly sensing the space around them.

Its two dull yellow eyes remained fixed on them, or rather, on Kyle alone. Veronica might as well have not existed.

Her pride came second to her concern.

"Kyle," she called, her voice carrying a note of caution. "This looks dangerous."

If she had to judge the creature by its appearance alone, it ranked at the very bottom of everything she had encountered before. But its appearance was not what unsettled her most. Its presence was.

There was something chilling about being ignored by a creature like this. It was not the indifference of an opponent keeping track of multiple threats. No, the creature simply did not consider her worthy of its attention.

Kyle merely hummed.

"Back me up if you feel it’s necessary. If we cause too much chaos, just draw your Field."

Veronica was taken aback and hurriedly asked, "Could I really hold something like this within my bounds?" She had never contained anything so powerful before. Humans were one thing, but something releasing such a concentrated presence of Absence would place an entirely different strain on her Field.

Yet all those complications seemed to fade from her mind when he looked her way. His eyes remained calm and warm as he said, "You are stronger than you think. Just trust yourself..."

His voice was cut short, not by choice, but because he caught the creature’s piercing tail mere inches from his face.

"Hmm?"

Kyle hummed in surprise as frost rapidly crawled across his hand, wrapping around his fingers and spreading toward his wrist. He immediately released the tail and generated enough Genesis to melt the ice away.

"Kyle!" Veronica cried out in alarm as another attack followed.

The monster had no intention of giving him even a moment to recover.

Kyle sprang to his left, and the tail followed instantly. He ran behind one of the ventilation units, forcing the creature’s elongated tail to stretch after him, its tip whipping through the air in pursuit.

Kyle vaulted over the ventilation unit and charged straight toward the creature.

The monster raised one hand, extended a finger toward him, and hurled a wave of frost through the air.

Kyle answered with Aquilla.

The golden bow materialized in his hand. He drew the string and released the arrow before the frost could reach him.

Ting.

The golden arrow absorbed the incoming frost as it advanced toward the creature, continuing forward as though the attack had done nothing to slow it.

Then came a sharp,

Crack.

The arrow shattered before it could reach its target.

Kyle’s eyes narrowed slightly. The frost was not merely an attack. It was capable of negating the effectiveness of Aquilla itself.

He had learned enough.

Kyle dismissed Aquilla and reached for the dagger at his belt. Genesis immediately flowed over the blade, coating it in a thin, concentrated sheen before he hurled it forward.

The monster responded by conjuring a small wall of ice in its path, clearly intending to let the dagger bury itself harmlessly into the barrier.

But Kyle raised his hand.

The dagger abruptly changed direction, curving over the ice wall as though pulled by an invisible force.

Squelch.

It buried itself in the creature.

Veronica couldn’t help but cheer inwardly. Kyle had not taken a single hit, while the Special Grade had already been stabbed.

But Kyle’s expression remained unimpressed.

"Just its tail, huh?"

Veronica understood what he meant a moment later.

The creature reached forward and seized its own tail before tearing it free.

The severed appendage, along with the dagger embedded within it, fell away.

The wound closed almost immediately, before another tail began to grow.

Kyle’s eyes narrowed.

The attack had landed perfectly, yet the creature had simply discarded the part of itself that had been struck.

Veronica clicked her tongue. "Slick bastard. Should have taken the damage like a warrior."

Her words were promptly ignored.

The creature suddenly lowered its body, muscles coiling beneath its scaled hide, before launching itself upward. In an instant, its entire body rose above the roofline. While still airborne, it swung one arm toward Kyle.

Several ice lances erupted into existence and came hurtling down.

Kyle’s perception slowed.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

He pushed it further until the world around him crawled at a pace his mind could comfortably process, slowing his vision by roughly four times to match the limits of his physical reflexes.

His body moved before the lances could reach him.

Left.

Right.

A diagonal step.

A sudden cross.

Kyle threaded through the barrage with precise movements, each evasion carrying him just beyond the reach of the incoming projectiles. The lances struck the concrete behind him, fracturing the surface and spreading frost across it in an instant. Chunks of frozen debris exploded outward with every impact.

Kyle continued moving, his eyes never leaving the creature.

He watched the way it attacked. The intervals between each lance. The direction of its movements. The way the frost formed. The manner in which it didn’t even remotely appear to be interested in physically fighting him.

He kept observing until a realization settled over him.

In a battle of magic, he would not survive for long like this.

The creature was merely utilising the immense amount of magic it possessed to keep Kyle on the bay. It was forcing Kyle to do something in his own rather than providing an opening by drawing closer.

Kyle’s gaze hardened.

He needed a plan.

He dashed forward as the rain continued to pour around them. The monster was not even fighting seriously. It was playing with him, testing how long he could endure beneath its relentless assault.

Kyle soon reached a position directly beneath the creature.

"Pillar of Dominance."

The gravity within that section of space suddenly intensified.

The creature’s descent became violent as its body was dragged downward, hurled back toward the rooftop with tremendous force.

Kyle was already prepared.

An orb of Genesis formed within his palm, dense and radiant, ready to be gifted to the one who deserved it.

Veronica couldn’t help but cheer at the sight of the proud creature finally being dragged from the sky. Kyle was clearly preparing to end this.

Except the monster never reached the surface.

A glacier of ice erupted from the rooftop.

The frozen mass surged upward with explosive force, intercepting the creature before gravity could slam it into the ground. Kyle immediately backed away as jagged ice tore through the rooftop, rapidly expanding into a towering formation beneath the monster.

The Pillar of Dominance had intensified gravity within a single section of space, but even that immense pressure could not demolish the sheer mass of ice that had risen beneath the creature.

The monster landed atop its frozen hill, standing as proudly as ever.

Its dull yellow eyes glared down at Kyle.

Kyle stared back.

The air around Kyle had grown cold enough that every breath now emerged visibly before him.

"Not now," Kyle suddenly muttered as he realized people were advancing towards them.

"Veronica, hold the door for me." He told her before slowly backing away.

Veronica also heard the hurried footsteps and rushed without a moment of thought.

*Clank*

"Huh? Open the door!" The officers cried and tried to push through.

Veronica gritted her teeth and kept it sealed and closed.

Her eyes traveled back to Kyle and found him preparing for the battle.

’We don’t have much time, Kyle. You need to go.’

Kyle knew that himself, however, rather than leaving, he decided to end this first.

The monster glared down at Kyle and raised its hand, preparing a frost orb that more or less would freeze the whole rooftop in an instant.

Kyle didn’t give him the chance.

He closed his eyes for a moment and when he opened them,

"Huh?" The monster let out a sound as its whole froze in shock. The orb from its hand vanished and rather, it began to construct an ice pillar below the human...to allow him to reach the nightmare.

Kyle continued to watch the creature, his skill <Stalemate> working as he wanted.

He walked closer to it and muttered. "If we had a larger battlefield, I would have enjoyed battling with you longer. But now,"

It was time to wrap things up.
