I was so focused on making sure the thing didn't collapse under its own mass that I built a support system with zero range of motion. It's not a gun. It's a fifty-meter steel-and-adamantium sculpture pointed permanently at whatever angle I happen to assemble it at."
Petrov set down his tools slowly, running back through his own review of the design, and winced. "...I missed that too. I was checking load-bearing capacity, not traversal range. That's a genuine oversight on both our parts."
"I need to actually aim this thing at a level two-hundred-and-fifty hydra that isn't going to conveniently stand still in one exact spot waiting for me to fire." Arista sat down hard on a nearby crate, the specific exhaustion of realizing a fundamental design flaw three days into physical construction settling over her. "This is so much worse than the timing problem. The timing problem was solvable with better triggers. This is 'I built a rigid structure with no moving parts, on a target I need to be able to point at multiple possible angles.'"
"Okay. Let's think through it properly, rather than panicking," Petrov said, already pulling out fresh paper. "What range of motion do you actually need? Full three-hundred-and-sixty-degree traversal, or something more limited?"
Arista considered that, working through the actual tactical reality rather than the worst-case scenario her tired brain had jumped to first. "...Limited, probably. I know roughly where the hydra's territory sits, the Wastelands, same general region Bram got eaten in. I don't need to aim this thing in every possible direction. I need a workable arc, horizontal and vertical, centered roughly on that territory, generous enough to track a moving target within it."

"That's considerably more achievable than full rotation." Petrov sketched a rough cone of coverage, centered on the known hydra territory. "So, traversal and elevation, but bounded, not unlimited. What if the rear mount stays largely fixed, since that's your primary recoil anchor, but the two support struts become adjustable instead of rigid?"
Arista sat with that, the shape of a solution starting to form. "...Pivoting struts. Instead of a fixed cradle point, each strut mounts on its own rotating base, same general idea as the recoil-absorption pivot you already suggested, except now it's not just absorbing shock, it's actually allowing controlled repositioning."
"Precisely. And for elevation—" Petrov tapped the vertical axis "—the rear mount could incorporate a slow, geared tilt mechanism. Nothing that needs to move fast. You're not tracking something at close range in real time. You need to be able to set an angle, confirm it, and hold that angle steady through firing."
"A worm gear, probably," Arista said, already sketching, the old, familiar problem-solving rhythm returning despite the fresh horror of the oversight. "Same logic as the gravity bike's drive ratio, small input motion, geared down into precise, controlled large-scale movement instead of anything fast or twitchy. I don't need speed. I need precision, and enough mechanical advantage that turning a fifty-meter barrel doesn't require inhuman strength."
She sketched quickly now, the design reorganizing itself around the new requirement: rear mount fitted with a geared elevation wheel, both support struts converted from fixed cradles into pivoting bases that could shift laterally within a bounded arc, everything still cushioned at every contact point with the same cloud material that had solved every previous force-related problem in her entire career.
"...Okay," she said finally, surveying the revised design, equal parts relieved and mortified. "This is fixable. It's just, considerably more moving parts than the version I was three days into building."
"Better to find this now," Petrov said, "than after the whole thing's assembled and rigidly welded into a single, permanently misaimed sculpture."
"...Yeah." Arista let out a long breath, already starting to disassemble the rigid strut sections she'd built over the past three days, without complaint, without frustration, just the familiar, practiced acceptance of a problem caught in time. "Okay. Let's go build a gun that can actually point at things."
