Arista sat with the wreckage for a long moment after Bram had limped off toward a healer, turning the failure over in her head the way she always did, not as an ending, but as data she hadn't finished interpreting yet.
"...Wait." She grabbed a splintered piece of the glider's wooden frame, testing its snapped edge against the memory of how the barrier had responded on impact. "The wood bounced. Hard. Almost the exact same force coming back as going in, that's classic elastic collision behavior, energy conserved, nothing absorbed."
She sat back on her heels, staring up at the distant cloud layer still hanging heavy and undisturbed above the mountain.
"What if the glider wasn't wood at all. What if it was cloud material. Same stuff as the barrier itself."
She grabbed her notebook, sketching rapidly, the old restless energy fully returned despite Bram's fresh injuries still healing somewhere behind her.
"When two different materials collide: rigid wood against elastic cloud-stuff, you get exactly what happened today. The wood can't absorb the impact the way the barrier can, so all that energy just transfers straight back, violent and immediate, textbook elastic bounce." She tapped the sketch. "But what happens when the same material hits itself? Cloud on cloud. Does it bounce the same way, or does it behave completely differently, because now there's no mismatch in how the two surfaces respond to force?"
She thought through it slowly, working from what she already knew, the shield, absorbing Bram's fall without ever cracking. The wingsuit, bleeding off wind shear instead of tearing. Every single application of the material so far had shown the same core property: it didn't fight force, it absorbed and redistributed it, given something compatible to absorb into.
"...If the glider's built from the same stuff as the barrier," she murmured, "there's no impedance mismatch anymore. No two different materials trying to force energy across a boundary that doesn't want to cooperate. It's not glider-hits-wall. It's cloud touching cloud, the same material meeting itself." She stared at the sketch, the theory forming faster than she could write it down. "Best case, it doesn't bounce at all. It just... merges. Passes through, the same way a drop of water doesn't bounce off the surface of a pond, because it's not hitting something foreign. It's just water rejoining more of itself."
She sat with that possibility for a long moment, genuinely uncertain, which was rare enough by itself to give her pause.
"...Or," she added, slower, "it does something completely different that I haven't thought of yet, because nobody's ever tried slamming a chunk of processed cloud-essence into the actual, unprocessed source material at speed."
She glanced toward the wreckage, then toward the mountain's base, where a fresh batch of cloud material sat stockpiled from her last mining expedition, still waiting to be shaped into something.
"...New glider. Full cloud-material frame this time, not just the shield and the suit panels. Same flex properties as the barrier itself, wing to wing." She was already sketching a structural layout, ribs and spars built from the same springy, energy-absorbing substance that had once bounced her iron pickaxe clean out of her hands. "If I'm right, it doesn't bounce back down at all. It just... goes through. Or gets absorbed. Or does something we genuinely can't predict yet, because this material's never been tested against itself at any real scale."
She grinned, already heading back toward the workshop, notebook clutched tight.
"...Bram's really not going to want to hear about this one."
The new build took a week, full cloud-material airframe exactly as planned, wings, spars, fuselage all shaped from the same springy, elastic essence that had bounced her pickaxe back on day one. The single exception was the cockpit itself, which Bram had been very, very clear about.
"Glass," he'd said, arms crossed, entirely unmoved by her attempts to talk him into a cloud-material canopy for structural consistency. "I want to see where I'm going this time. Every disaster so far has involved me finding out what happened after it already happened. I would like, for once, to watch it coming."
"That defeats half the point of uniform material properties—"

She'd relented, fitting a proper glass canopy into the cloud-material fuselage, sealed and reinforced as best she could manage without compromising the surrounding structure's flex.
"Hey," Bram said, midway through securing a wing spar into place, entirely too casual about it. "Did you hear about Tabula Rasa?"
"No. What?"
"Apparently it's Rosa now."
"...Why?"
Bram pointed, wordlessly, at her hair.
Arista stared at him for a long moment, then sighed, visibly fighting back a smirk.
"...Of course. Figures."
The launch went smoothly enough, trebuchet recalibrated, angle corrected, the airframe catching a clean, shallow arc exactly as designed, gliding upward toward the barrier at a controlled, deliberate speed rather than the previous attempt's violent overcorrection.
Then the nose hit the cloud layer.
And it went in.
Not bounced. Not resisted. The cloud-material nose sank into the barrier exactly as her theory predicted, no impedance mismatch, no elastic rebound, just smooth, seamless absorption, the same material meeting itself without conflict.
The cockpit did not do the same thing.
The glass canopy, rigid and utterly foreign to the barrier's elastic nature, hit that same resistant surface a fraction of a second later and simply stopped: planted, fixed, exactly the way Arista's iron pickaxe had once planted itself uselessly against the barrier before she'd ever solved the material problem in the first place.
The rest of the plane did not stop.
Wings, tail, fuselage, everything still built from cooperative, absorbing cloud material, kept its forward momentum exactly as physics demanded, the entire airframe continuing to drive forward around a cockpit that had, for all functional purposes, become an anchor.
"...oh no—" Arista, watching from the mountain, saw the plane's silhouette crumple and twist mid-flight, the glass-encased cockpit staying fixed in place while the rest of the aircraft's momentum tore it apart around that one unyielding point.
Bram was thrown backward, hard, the glass canopy's rigid resistance transferring the entire aircraft's remaining forward force directly into him at the one moment nothing else in the structure was left to absorb it.

He came down in a long, ugly tumble, wreckage scattering behind him, and hit the mountainside hard enough that Arista was already sprinting before he'd even finished skidding to a stop.
"BRAM—"
He lay very still for a long moment. Then, weakly, one hand lifted in a shaky, unmistakable thumbs-up.
"...Barely," he wheezed, as she skidded to her knees beside him, already fumbling for a healing potion. "Seven percent. I checked. I'm counting that as surviving, not as fine."
"You're not fine, you're barely alive—"
"I'm aware. I was there." He grabbed the potion, drinking it in one long pull, color slowly returning as the worst of the damage knitted itself back together. "What happened."
Arista sat back on her heels, replaying the whole disaster in her head, piece by piece, the theory and the failure both slotting into place with brutal, obvious clarity.
"...The cockpit," she said slowly. "The one piece I didn't build out of cloud material. Everything else passed through clean, exactly like I predicted, the nose, the wings, the fuselage, all of it merged into the barrier without resistance. But the glass canopy didn't merge with anything. It hit the barrier like a completely separate object, planted itself dead still, and the rest of the plane kept moving around it because the rest of the plane was still obeying the same physics I designed it to follow."
"...So the compromise killed the design."
"The compromise killed the design," Arista confirmed, wincing. "You wanted visibility. I gave you visibility. And the one piece of rigid, non-cooperative material in the entire aircraft turned into the exact anchor point that tore everything else apart around it."
Bram closed his eyes, letting the healing potion finish its work, saying nothing for a long moment.
"...So what now."
Arista sat with the wreckage, with the theory, with the specific, uncomfortable realization crystallizing slowly at the edges of her mind, not a failure of the material science, which had actually worked exactly as predicted, but a failure of what she'd been trying to build in the first place.
"...We're not building an airplane," she said slowly.
Bram cracked one eye open. "...What?"
"An airplane goes through air. That's the whole design philosophy, wings, lift, moving through a medium that offers minimal resistance." She stared up at the distant, heavy cloud layer, the shape of the actual problem finally, properly clicking into place. "But the barrier isn't air. It's resistant. It's dense, in its own way, even though it looks like sky. We're not flying through open atmosphere up there. We're pushing through something that behaves more like a fluid under pressure than open space."
"...You're saying it's basically water."
"I'm saying it behaves like water enough that treating it like open air was the mistake from the start." Arista was already reaching for her notebook, the old restless energy returning despite everything, despite Bram still lying flat on his back nursing seven percent of his own HP bar back to full. "We don't need an airplane. We need something built for pressure, for moving through a resistant medium without a single rigid point anywhere on the hull to catch and anchor against it."
She looked at him, grinning, the shape of the next idea already fully formed.
"...We need a submarine with wings."
Bram lay back down flat on the mountainside, staring up at the sky that had just nearly killed him, and let out the longest, most resigned sigh of his entire in-game existence.
