"Not bad. At least you know how to dodge," the warrior laughed.
He pulled one armored arm backward, and the thick chain snapped taut between them. The chained mace tore itself free from the crater before returning to him, dragging broken stone through the air as it crossed the distance. He caught the handle without looking, allowing the enormous spiked head to swing once beside his mount before resting it against one armored shoulder.
At first glance, it looked like an ordinary weapon, aside from its ridiculous size and the crimson runes carved across its black surface. Yet Max knew there was something deeply wrong with it. His body had sensed the danger only a moment before the strike reached him, and that warning had likely saved his arm from being shattered or completely torn away.
Max looked down at the crater left behind by the attack, his sharpened pupils studying the scorched stone surrounding it. The chained mace had not merely struck the mountainside with overwhelming physical force. It had produced a violent explosion the moment it made contact, releasing all the energy stored within it at once.
It reminded him of a grenade from his old world, though the destruction caused by this weapon existed on an entirely different scale.
"But let’s see how long you can keep dodging!" the warrior roared.
His mount lowered its armored head as he swung the chained mace around his body again. The chain rattled louder with every rotation, scattering the dust surrounding him before he released the weapon with another powerful motion.
The spiked head shot toward Max.
This time, he was ready.
Black mist condensed around his right hand and stretched outward, forming a long void blade whose edge shone with an unnatural dark light. Max’s body distorted as mana erupted behind him, launching him forward with enough speed to produce a sharp crack through the air.
The chained mace missed him by less than a meter.
Max twisted around it with ease and continued toward the warrior, his void blade already raised to cut through the crimson armor covering his chest. However, the weapon did not strike the ground or produce another explosion. The chain suddenly tightened, and the mace reversed direction in midair, rushing back toward its owner even faster than Max could reach him.
The warrior’s eyes followed Max from beneath his horned helmet.
He had expected him to close the distance.
Just as Max brought his void blade down, the chained mace returned to the warrior’s hand and rose between them.
Darkness collided with crimson metal.
The resulting explosion shook both the air and the ground.
A deafening blast erupted from the point of impact, sending a circular shock wave across the battlefield. Dust and broken stone exploded outward while the enormous beast beneath the warrior was forced to spread all six of its legs to avoid collapsing.
The weaker soldiers nearby were not as fortunate.
Dozens were torn from their feet and thrown through the air, their armor bending beneath the pressure before their bodies crashed into the ground, siege weapons, and one another. More than one died before landing, blood spraying from inside shattered armor, while the luckier warriors managed to dive aside or raise defensive magic in time, escaping with broken bones and deep wounds.
Even the Frankindian defenders upon the wall were forced to brace themselves as the shock wave struck the battlements.
Max and the armored warrior remained locked together at the center of the blast. The void blade pressed against the spiked mace, darkness crawling across the crimson runes while explosive force continued bursting between the two weapons.
The warrior’s helmet tilted forward.
A disturbing smile became visible through the narrow opening protecting his face.
"Not bad, kid," he said, his voice almost drowned beneath the cracking mana between them. "Finally, I can enjoy a proper warm-up before the slaughter inside that city."
"The only slaughter you will see today will be on your side," Max snorted.
He abruptly released the pressure against the chained mace and twisted away. His left claw opened as several colors of mana gathered inside his palm, each one twisting around the others without fully merging. Fire, ice, wind, lightning, and void formed a violently unstable sphere, illuminating the dark scales across his arm with constantly changing light.
The armored warrior’s smile disappeared.
Max thrust his claw forward.
The gathered magic erupted at almost point-blank range.
A multicolored beam crashed into the warrior’s chest before he could swing his weapon again. The crimson armor reacted immediately, its runes blazing to life as thick red light spread across his body and formed a barrier around him.
The two powers collided.
Another explosion tore through the battlefield, far larger than the first.
Max was hurled in one direction while the armored warrior was ripped from his saddle and sent flying in the other. Both disappeared into clouds of dust and magical light, leaving only the enormous six-legged mount standing where they had clashed.
The beast stumbled but did not fall.
Blood ran down its armored back where the shock waves and fragments of magic had torn through the gaps between its plates. It threw back its horned head and released a roar filled with pain, the sound carrying across the battlefield as the ground beneath it continued to crack.
The moment Max’s feet planted firmly against the ground, several thunderous explosions erupted around him. Dust and shattered stone flew in every direction as five more figures descended onto the battlefield, each landing with enough force to leave cracks spreading beneath their feet.
From the opposite cloud of dust, the warrior with the chained mace emerged at the same time. Smoke rose from his crimson armor, and several of its spikes had been damaged by Max’s attack, yet his steps remained steady as he dragged the massive weapon behind him. He rolled one shoulder, looked toward the five newcomers, and then returned his attention to Max with the same disturbing smile.
When the dust began to clear, six powerful warriors surrounded him.
Three wore the brutal crimson armor of the Crimson Horde, while the other three were covered in the polished golden armor of the Imperial Court Empire. Every one of them carried an intimidating aura, yet none appeared particularly concerned by Max’s presence. Smirks rested upon their faces as they watched him, treating the newly arrived king as nothing more than entertainment capable of relieving the boredom of an otherwise disappointing battle.
Max slowly straightened and tightened his grip around the void blade. A heavy breath escaped him as his sharpened pupils moved from one warrior to another, studying their weapons, armor, and the pressure flowing from their bodies.
He could already tell that all five newcomers stood at the same level as the man with the chained mace.
The six warriors began spreading out, closing every possible path of escape while their combined pressure settled over Max from all directions.
For the first time in a long while, his confidence was met by a genuine warning from every instinct in his body.
Today, Max would face a battle unlike any he had fought before.
