"Aren’t you having all the fun for yourself, Urus?" a young voice called from within the circle surrounding Max.

Urus emerged from the dust, dragging his chained mace behind him. Smoke rose from his damaged crimson armor, but his steps remained steady as he returned to the group. With a pull of his arm, he swung the mace in a wide circle and scattered the dust clinging to him.

"Ulaghchi, Nogai," Urus greeted the two Crimson Horde warriors already holding their positions around Max. "Aren’t you ashamed of stealing food from your brother’s table? This prey is mine."

Ulaghchi stood to Max’s left, appearing almost delicate beside the burly warrior. He had a narrow face, sharp brown eyes, and long black hair braided down his back. His lighter crimson armor was formed from overlapping plates, while two curved blades rested inside black sheaths at his hips. Small silver bells hung from their handles, remaining strangely silent despite the wind.

A playful smile rested upon his lips as he looked Max up and down.

"Your prey?" Ulaghchi raised one eyebrow. "From where I stood, it looked like your prey knocked you from your mount and burned half the spikes from your armor."

Urus glanced at the damaged plates covering his chest, where several crimson runes continued flickering weakly.

"Say that again after I pull your tongue out."

Ulaghchi’s smile widened as he spread his arms, inviting Urus to try.

Nogai showed no interest in their argument. He stood behind Max, completing the Crimson Horde’s half of the circle. He was older than the other two, with a weathered face, a thick black-and-gray beard, and several scars cutting across his cheeks. Dark crimson plates covered layers of black leather and beast fur, while a long composite bow rested in one hand. Mana gathered around its string, revealing that it was far more dangerous than it appeared.

"Stop barking at each other," Nogai said, his quiet voice carrying enough weight to silence them. His cold eyes never left Max. "That thing in front of us is no ordinary dragon."

On the opposite half of the circle stood three warriors dressed in polished golden armor. Unlike the Crimson Horde warriors, they remained disciplined and completely focused upon Max, each positioned far enough apart to attack without obstructing the others.

The first was a tall man in his early forties, with short black hair touched by silver and a closely trimmed beard framing his stern face. Overlapping golden plates covered his body, engraved with eagles, laurel leaves, and rays of sunlight. A deep-red cloak rested upon his shoulders, while a long spear glowed with concentrated golden mana in his hand.

He planted the lower end of the weapon against the cracked ground and raised his chin.

"Legate Cassian Varro, commander of the First Golden Legion."

The younger man beside him possessed neatly curled blond hair, pale skin, and a handsome face untouched by lasting scars. A white cloak trimmed with crimson thread covered his lighter golden armor, while a broad rectangular shield protected his left side. A short sword rested at his waist.

His blue eyes studied Max with open amusement.

"Tribune Lucius Marcellus." He gave Max a shallow, mocking bow without leaving his position. "I expected the infamous King Maximus to be taller."

Max’s claws tightened around the handle of his void blade.

Lucius noticed and smiled.

The final Imperial warrior was a tall, muscular woman dressed in segmented golden armor. Her dark auburn hair had been pulled into a long braid, revealing a sharp face marked by a thin scar across the bridge of her nose. A golden half-mask shaped like an expressionless woman’s face hung from her waist.

She carried two short spears, their narrow points surrounded by faint golden flames.

"Praetorian Valeria Drusa," she said without bowing. "Personal blade of Emperor Augustus."

Unlike Lucius, Valeria displayed no amusement. Her amber eyes followed every movement of Max’s hands and shoulders, while her spears remained lowered at angles that allowed her to raise them without warning.

Cassian turned his stern gaze toward Urus as the burly warrior took the final open position in the circle.

"You were ordered to wait until the Frankindian barrier collapsed," the legate said. "Instead, you charged forward because your pride could not tolerate someone interrupting your fun."

Urus dragged the chained mace across the stone, carving a deep line behind it.

"If your golden dogs moved any slower, the war would end from old age."

Lucius’s smile disappeared as he shifted his shield forward.

"What did you call us?"

"Enough," Valeria interrupted without taking her eyes off Max. "Save your hatred for after the capital falls."

The circle tightened.

Urus stood directly ahead with the crimson runes across his chained mace glowing again. Ulaghchi rested his hands upon the handles of his curved blades, while Nogai raised his bow. On the opposite side, Cassian held his golden spear upright, Lucius positioned his shield in front of him, and Valeria watched Max from behind with both short spears ready.

Their formation was too precise to be improvised. Despite serving two different powers, they had either fought together before or prepared for enemies strong enough to require all six of them.

Max slowly turned his head, studying each opponent without revealing which one concerned him most. Every aura pressing against him carried enough strength to rival Urus.

Cassian’s pressure was the heaviest, disciplined and steady like an army advancing behind an unbreakable shield. Valeria’s mana remained concentrated around the points of her spears, while Lucius spread his golden power across his body and shield. The Crimson Horde warriors felt wilder, their mana moving like beasts struggling against chains, yet none lacked control.

Ulaghchi slowly pulled one curved blade halfway from its sheath.

The silver bells attached to its handle finally rang, their quiet sound carrying through the explosions and screams echoing around the mountain.

Lucius drew his short sword and rested the flat of its blade against the top of his shield as his smile returned.

"This should be entertaining."

Max tightened his grip around the void blade and released a slow breath through his nose. Every instinct in his body screamed that none of the warriors surrounding him could be treated lightly.

One had nearly destroyed his arm.

Now there were six.
