Supreme Bloodline Evolution System
Chapter 223: The Arrival of Two EmperorsMax’s claw dug deeper into the broken ground as he forced himself to remain upright. Blood continued dripping from his abdomen and shoulder, while every breath sent another wave of pain through his chest.
"I’m too weak... I’m still too weak. I can’t fall here. Even if it means accepting my true self, I can’t fall yet. Not before I achieve my goals... not before all of them can live happily..." Max whispered.
To anyone watching from the side, it appeared as though the devastation had finally broken him and left him muttering senselessly to himself.
Urus raised his chained mace for another strike.
"Still trying to stand?" Lucius asked, watching Max from behind his cracked shield. "You should have remained in your little dragon kingdom."
Max barely heard him.
His mind remained fixed upon the capital behind him and the woman somewhere within it. He had crossed half the human lands to reach Clotilde, only to find two armies waiting outside her walls and six warriors preventing him from taking another step toward her.
Now, his own strength was failing him, and something inside him snapped.
His sharpened pupils disappeared as blackness consumed his eyes completely. The pain vanished from his expression, followed by the anger and desperation that had controlled him moments earlier. His face became empty, and the claw supporting his body slowly tightened until the stone beneath it crumbled into dust.
The six warriors sensed the change.
Cassian lowered his center of gravity and tightened both hands around his spear.
"Move back," he ordered.
For once, even Urus obeyed.
Max slowly rose.
The combined blade pinned beneath Valeria’s spear shattered without warning. Crystal fragments lifted from the ground and dissolved into black mist, carrying the golden and purple flames into the darkness surrounding him.
Black mist erupted from Max in every direction, spreading so violently that it swallowed both invading armies within seconds. The crimson flames burning across the mountainside disappeared, while the golden siege weapons cracked as the mana stored inside them was ripped away.
Thousands of soldiers collapsed.
Mages screamed as their reserves were pulled from their bodies, streams of multicolored light tearing from their skin before vanishing into the darkness. Enchanted armor became ordinary metal, protective formations failed, and the weapons held by both armies lost their glow.
The six warriors suffered the same fate.
The flames surrounding Valeria’s spears vanished. The golden eagle upon Lucius’s shield darkened, while Cassian’s leaf-shaped spear trembled as its stored power was dragged from the blade.
Nogai released his bowstring, but the crimson mana surrounding his arrow was stripped away in midflight. The physical shaft continued forward before striking Max’s scales and snapping harmlessly against them. Ulaghchi’s enchanted bells fell silent, and every crimson rune covering Urus’s armor and chained mace went dark.
"What is this?" Lucius gasped.
Max took one step toward them. The ground sank beneath his clawed foot.
He no longer appeared to recognize any of them. There was no satisfaction in his black eyes as he watched their power disappear, nor did he react to their fear. The void had taken control of everything inside him, leaving only its endless hunger behind.
It wanted all of them.
It wanted everything...
Until that moment, Max had deliberately prevented his void magic from crossing Frankindia’s walls.
Now, that control was gone, replaced by the fury of a man who had been driven beyond reason.
Black mist poured through the cracked defensive barrier and entered the capital. The remaining runes protecting Parahdon flickered before shattering, sending fragments of light raining across the streets.
The city’s damaged black walls began to split.
Mana was pulled from the enchantments reinforcing the sections already weakened by the siege. Entire portions of the battlements leaned toward the mountainside, while defensive towers groaned as cracks spread through their damaged foundations.
Crystal lanterns, enchanted wells, and protective formations throughout the capital failed one after another. Buildings already weakened by the constant bombardment shook when the magic supporting them disappeared. Roofs collapsed into crowded streets, windows shattered, and enormous blocks of black stone broke away from the outer wall before tumbling down the mountain.
Max had stopped the invading armies, but now he was slowly destroying the city he had come to save.
From the look of him, he was no longer in control of his magic, consumed by the desire to return everything surrounding him to the void.
Inside the palace, every golden flame went out at once.
Darkness filled the throne room as the floor trembled beneath Clotilde’s knees. The silver engravings covering her black armor lost their glow, while the crystals hidden inside her spear began leaking mana into the air.
She raised her head, her eyes shining with the fear she had desperately hoped never to feel.
Clotilde knew that presence.
She had felt it inside Voidstar, seen it moving around Max’s body, and watched it swallow every form of magic he wished to absorb. It was dangerous, perhaps more dangerous than anything else in this world, but it belonged to him.
"Max..." she whispered.
Gunthar turned toward her. "What did you say?"
"That is Maximus."
Clotilde pushed herself to her feet as another violent tremor passed through the palace. Dust poured from the ceiling, and one of the black pillars split near its base.
"He came for me."
"Remain where you are!" King Clovis ordered from his throne.
Clotilde turned toward the doors.
Two of the black-armored warriors kneeling beside her rose and moved into her path, though neither drew a weapon.
"Commander, you cannot leave," one of them warned. "The king has not dismissed you."
She continued walking anyway.
Gunthar stood and reached for her arm. "If you abandon the palace during an invasion, it will be treason."
Clotilde knocked his hand aside.
Something burned inside her silver eyes with an intensity Gunthar had never seen before, making him freeze before he could reach for her again. Her stare felt like a dagger held against his soul, warning him what would happen if he dared to cross the line.
"Then call me a traitor," Clotilde spat.
"Clotilde!" Clovis roared as he forced himself from the throne. "I order you to remain here!"
Her footsteps stopped.
For several breaths, she stood with her back toward the king she had served throughout her entire life. Her shoulders trembled, but when she finally looked back, there was no uncertainty remaining in her silver eyes.
"I am sorry, Your Majesty," she said. "But I choose him."
Clotilde reached deep into the reserves stored inside her body, forcing the mana outward faster than Max’s darkness could consume it.
Crystal magic exploded around her.
The warriors blocking the doorway were thrown aside as transparent shards spread across Clotilde’s armor and launched her through the palace entrance. The crystals were already dimming beneath the void’s pull, forcing her to continuously replace them as she rushed into the collapsing city.
She formed platforms beneath her feet and leaped across the damaged rooftops toward the outer wall. Each crystal cracked and dissolved into black mist the moment she left it behind, while the drain tearing at her body grew stronger with every step.
Behind her, Clovis continued shouting for her to return.
Clotilde did not look back.
Outside the capital, Max continued walking toward the six warriors.
Cassian’s face had lost its earlier calm. Sweat covered Lucius’s forehead, while Valeria struggled to maintain her grip around spears that no longer carried golden flame. Even Urus had stopped smiling as mana poured from the gaps in his crimson armor.
Max raised one claw.
Black mist gathered above the six warriors, forming an enormous void spiral large enough to pull all of them inside. The force shook the air itself, slowly lifting their feet from the ground against their will.
Then two figures appeared in the distance.
The first was surrounded by crimson light so dense that the air filled with the smell of fresh blood. The darkness near him twisted and withdrew, unable to consume the power burning around his body.
Beside him stood another man covered in gold.
His light was brighter than the siege weapons and more overwhelming than the barrier that had protected Parahdon. It spread across the battlefield like the arrival of a second sun, tearing open the darkness wherever it passed.
Every soldier froze.
The six warriors lowered their weapons, their faces paling as they recognized the two figures who had arrived to rescue them.
A cry rose from the golden ranks first, followed immediately by the warriors of the Crimson Horde, until the same words thundered across both armies.
"The emperors!"
Max stopped mid-step.
For the first time since his mind had disappeared into the void, his body refused to move.
Clotilde reached the outer wall and launched herself from its broken edge.
"Max!"
The man surrounded by golden light raised one hand. His expression remained gentle as he extended a single finger toward Max.
There was no explosion. No visible attack. It happened so quickly that nobody understood what they had witnessed.
The blackness vanished from Max’s eyes, revealing his sharpened pupils once again. Confusion crossed his face as he looked down.
Clotilde landed several dozen meters behind him and froze. No one had seen when it happened or how the attack had reached him.
There was nothing left in the center of Max’s chest. There was only a perfectly round hole filled with golden light.
In the distance, the man in gold smiled gently, his single finger still extended toward him.
