Supreme Bloodline Evolution System
Chapter 224: Defeated for the First TimeThe battle that had shaken the entire mountainside ended just like that, decided by a single movement so fast and overwhelming that almost nobody understood what had happened until they saw the enormous hole left in the center of Max’s chest.
Cheers erupted from both invading armies as thousands of soldiers raised their weapons and shouted the titles of their emperors, celebrating the fall of the dragon king who had swallowed their magic, stopped their siege, and nearly crushed six of their strongest warriors at once.
The six warriors who had fought Max did not immediately join the celebration.
Relief could be seen upon their faces, but beneath it remained humiliation and fear, because despite surrounding Max and attacking him together, they had still needed their emperors to save them from the final eruption of his void magic.
That knowledge was a painful slap against their pride, especially after they had mocked him, demanded his surrender, and treated the entire battle as entertainment.
Yet the person most shocked by what had happened was Max himself.
He could not understand how or why the attack had reached him. He had not sensed the movement of mana, the slightest trace of killing intent, or even the familiar warning from his instincts that had saved him countless times before.
The golden emperor had merely raised one hand and extended a finger toward him, and before Max could understand what he intended to do, a large portion of his chest had already disappeared.
The difference between their strength existed on a level Max could not comprehend.
Everything he had achieved inside the Dragon Region, every ruler he had defeated, and every kingdom he had brought beneath Voidstar suddenly felt painfully insignificant. He had grown confident after defeating the Arbiter and conquering enemies who had once appeared untouchable.
But the man standing in the distance had destroyed that confidence without taking a single step toward him.
The system had grown deathly quiet as well. No warning appeared before his eyes, no message offered to heal his body, and no sudden ability emerged to grant him enough strength to survive.
Max desperately waited for the familiar voice to respond, but the system remained silent as though it had abandoned him at the moment he needed it most.
For the first time since arriving in this world, Max understood that he was truly alone.
The golden light filling the hole in his chest began to fade, and the moment it disappeared, hot blood burst from both sides of the opening before pouring down the dark scales covering his body.
The remaining strength inside his legs vanished, causing him to sway as his wings lowered toward the shattered ground and his tail stopped moving behind him.
Max managed to turn his head slightly, finding Clotilde only several dozen meters away from him. She had dropped to both knees, her silver eyes overflowing with tears as she stared at the ruin left in the center of his chest.
Her lips moved as she screamed his name, but the sound never reached him, drowned beneath the ringing inside his ears and the distant celebration of the two invading armies.
An eerie silence filled Max’s mind, followed by a calm and comfort he had never experienced before.
The pain spreading through his body gradually faded, his fear disappeared, and even the heavy pressure he had carried throughout both of his lives seemed to lift from his shoulders as the battlefield around him became increasingly distant.
He did not want that peace. He did not want to die, and every part of him refused to accept that his journey would end here before his children were born, before Voidstar became the kingdom he had imagined, and before the people he loved could finally live without fearing every powerful enemy waiting beyond their borders.
In his previous world, Max had fought against death until his final breath, refusing to surrender even as his body failed beneath him.
This time, however, the wound was too great, and he could not gather enough strength to voice his defiance. His mouth opened, but no words came out, while the claws supporting his weight slowly slipped across the blood-covered stone.
Max refused to die, yet his body was no longer listening.
His eyelids grew unbearably heavy as the last strength inside his arms disappeared, causing him to collapse face-first against the shattered ground. His cheek struck the stone, but even the pain was distant now, barely noticeable beneath the coldness spreading from the empty hole in his chest.
Through his fading vision, Max saw two pairs of feet approaching him.
One pair was covered in heavy crimson armor, each step leaving a faint blood-red glow upon the stone, while the other moved beneath long golden robes that remained perfectly clean despite the dust, blood, and destruction covering the battlefield. The pressure accompanying them was so overwhelming that Max’s damaged body trembled simply from having them nearby.
"So this is the pest you were complaining to me about?" the crimson emperor asked, his extremely deep voice rolling across the battlefield like distant thunder. "Isn’t he a little too weak to have caused the Imperial Court so much trouble?"
A cruel laugh escaped him as he stopped beside Max and lowered one armored boot onto the side of his head.
The emperor pressed down slowly, forcing Max’s face deeper against the broken stone. His scales scraped across the ground, blood spreading beneath his cheek as the pressure continued increasing, grinding his face against the surface until several of the smaller scales cracked and broke away.
Max tried to lift one claw, but his fingers only twitched against the ground.
"Easy now," the man in gold said, watching the humiliation with a calm smile. "I want to send his head back to those troublesome dragons intact. After all, my son would have been more than pleased to see his killer displayed upon a spear before that wretched race."
The golden emperor laughed, the sound resembling the roar of an enormous lion as it traveled across the mountainside and shook what remained of Frankindia’s damaged walls. The soldiers of the Imperial Court immediately joined him, their voices rising with renewed excitement as they looked forward to seeing the dragon king executed before them.
"No... No! Get off him!"
Clotilde’s desperate voice cut through the celebration.
Max could still hear her, even as every other sound around him grew increasingly distant. He could still feel the emperor’s boot pressing against his head and the humiliation of being treated like a defeated animal before tens of thousands of soldiers.
Had his heart still been beating inside his chest, his blood would have boiled with enough fury to drive him back onto his feet. He would have torn the hearts from both emperors and forced them to swallow the organs before killing them.
However, his heart was gone, and his body no longer carried enough strength to obey his rage.
"Oh?" The golden emperor turned toward Clotilde as she rushed across the ruined battlefield. His eyes moved over the black armor covering her body before a cold smirk replaced the gentle smile upon his face. Before speaking, his gaze briefly shifted toward the shadowy figure standing several steps behind the two emperors. "Is this the bitch you were telling me about?"
Clotilde tightened both hands around her spear and forced the last of her mana into its crystal core. Transparent shards erupted around the weapon, spreading outward until they formed a thick barrier before her body.
She did not slow down.
Crystal magic spilled from the point of her spear as she thrust it toward the two emperors, attempting to force them away from Max long enough to reach him.
The crimson emperor did not remove his foot from Max’s head.
He merely turned toward Clotilde and flicked one finger.
The crystal barrier shattered instantly.
Thousands of transparent fragments exploded backward as an invisible force struck Clotilde in the chest and ripped her from the ground. Her body crossed the battlefield before crashing into one of the damaged defensive walls with enough force to split the remaining black stone.
The wall collapsed around her.
Clotilde disappeared beneath the falling rubble as dust and broken crystal spread through the air, leaving no trace of her black armor visible beneath the destruction.
Max’s claw dug weakly against the ground.
He wanted to move, but his body refused to rise. Even the void magic that had nearly consumed both armies no longer responded.
Then another figure walked out from behind the two emperors.
The man moved almost like a shadow, his steps quiet and his body partially hidden beneath the golden and crimson light surrounding the two rulers. Golden ice flame covered his arms and shoulders, burning without producing any visible smoke, while strips of skin had begun peeling away from several parts of his face and hands.
There was something horribly unnatural about his appearance, as though the power moving through his body no longer belonged inside him.
Max’s vision had already begun to darken, preventing him from seeing the man’s face clearly, yet the moment the figure spoke, he recognized the voice.
"She served her purpose perfectly," the man said as he looked toward the rubble burying Clotilde. "Just as expected, she proved to be the perfect bait for drawing him out of the Dragon Region."
The voice belonged to Henry.
