Darkness surrounded a single motionless figure in every direction, stretching so far beyond him that it resembled the empty vacuum between distant worlds.
There was no sound, no movement, and no visible end to the space in which he remained suspended. Even the darkness itself appeared unnaturally still, without the slightest current of wind to disturb its surface.
The figure possessed the broad shoulders and athletic frame of a man, but nothing else about him could be seen with the naked eye.
Thick black mist wrapped around his body like a second skin, covering every scar and familiar feature beneath a constantly shifting layer of darkness. It did not drift away or spread into the surrounding void. It remained attached to him, moving so slowly that it appeared to be breathing in his place.
Hidden beneath that mask of darkness, Max’s face rested peacefully with his eyes closed. There was no pain remaining upon his expression, nor any trace of the anger that had consumed him during his final moments upon the battlefield. He did not breathe, and his heart did not beat, because there was no longer anything inside his chest capable of sustaining his life.
Only the hole remained.
A thick drop of darkness slowly formed along its lower edge, hanging there for an impossibly long time before finally separating and falling into the void below.
The drop never struck anything. It continued descending until it became too small to follow, eventually disappearing into the same darkness that surrounded Max.
At first, another drop had formed every second. As more time passed, the distance between them stretched into minutes, then hours, days, and weeks.
By now, a single drop emerged only once every month, as though the last remaining piece of Max was slowly leaking from the wound and being consumed by the world around him.
Another month passed before the next drop began to form.
It gathered beneath the opening, stretched toward the depths below, and remained there.
This time, it did not fall.
"I had never imagined you would fall so quickly or so miserably. Max, why did you have to disappoint me?"
A woman’s voice suddenly traveled through the darkness, coming from every direction at once without revealing a source. It was neither distant nor close, and although the words were spoken quietly, they passed through the void without weakening until even the black mist wrapped around Max’s body trembled beneath their weight.
One after another, enormous eyes opened within the darkness.
Some appeared directly above Max, while others watched from beneath and from distances too great to measure.
They possessed no faces or bodies, only pupils of different shapes and colors staring through the void with an ancient sorrow that could not be expressed through tears.
None of them blinked as they observed the motionless figure suspended between them, and yet Max did not react to their presence, as though he had already passed beyond the point where anything could reach him.
The attention of those eyes carried a pressure of its own, causing the darkness around Max to bend and gather more tightly against his body.
Several pupils narrowed when they looked upon the empty opening in his chest, while others moved across his face as though searching for the smallest sign that something remained inside him.
They found no response from him, yet they continued watching with the patience of beings for whom months and centuries held little difference.
His body remained empty, and his soul appeared to have abandoned the broken shell long ago, but the woman knew that a small piece of it was still there.
Max’s soul had not escaped into another world or disappeared after his death. The darkness leaking from the hole in his chest was what remained of it.
"I suppose some of the blame belongs to me," the woman continued, her voice growing stronger as the eyes surrounding Max watched in silence.
"I should have guided you more carefully, but I allowed you to grow without ever teaching you how insignificant your strength truly was. Even so, you gave me hope. You were never the strongest among those who came before you, nor were you the most talented, yet beneath all the darkness masking your existence, you possessed a heart that remained painfully warm and kind."
Her voice continued rising until every word carried the sound of a great bell struck beneath the light of a full moon. The darkness rippled with each echo, spreading farther than the watching eyes and disturbing a place that had remained silent for longer than any living creature could comprehend.
"It truly is a pity that such a heart could not save you."
The last drop of darkness remained suspended beneath the opening in Max’s chest. Its surface trembled at the sound of her voice, slowly changing from a perfect sphere into an unstable mass that stretched in several directions before pulling itself together again.
The woman released a quiet sigh.
"However, I am not ready to let you die. Not yet. Even if surviving means that you must change into something you were never meant to become."
The drop moved upward.
It returned to the hole in Max’s chest and stopped at its center, where it began expanding as more darkness gathered around it. Thin streams of black mist separated from the surrounding void and entered the drop from every direction, forcing it to grow until it became almost as large as the heart that had once beaten inside him.
The substance refused to hold a stable form. One moment it appeared liquid, with waves moving across its surface, while the next it hardened into something resembling black crystal before collapsing into mist again. Each transformation released a pulse that shook Max’s motionless body and caused fractures to appear across the dark skin surrounding the wound.
"Perhaps kindness was the weakness that brought you here," the woman said as the unstable mass continued changing. "Perhaps the heart you carried prevented you from becoming what this world demands. If that is true, then I will replace it with something that will never hesitate, never forgive, and never break for those who would gladly watch you die."
The mass contracted violently.
For the first time since Max had arrived in that place, a sound entered the darkness.
A heartbeat.
The pulse was weak and uneven, yet it traveled through Max’s entire body, causing his fingers to curl slightly and the black mist covering his skin to rise. Thin veins formed around the unstable heart and spread through the empty chest, attaching themselves to his damaged flesh before carrying liquid darkness toward his arms and head.
A second heartbeat followed.
This one was stronger.
The first wave of darkness reached Max’s damaged organs and wrapped around them, filling every tear and replacing the blood that had long since disappeared from his body.
His lungs expanded without drawing breath, his muscles tightened beneath the mist, and the broken remains of his bones shifted back toward their original positions.
The void did not repair what had been lost as much as it filled the empty spaces with pieces of itself, becoming part of Max wherever his original body could no longer be restored.
The hole in Max’s chest began closing around the new organ as flesh formed along its edges. Broken bones stretched across the opening and connected once again. The process was slow and violent, repeatedly tearing apart whenever the heart changed its form, only to begin again with the next pulse.
The attention of the surrounding eyes remained fixed upon the transformation.
Some shifted uneasily, while others slowly closed as though they could not bear to witness what Max was becoming. The heart forming inside him was not an organ that belonged to any race.
It was an unstable concentration of void magic forced into the shape of something capable of sustaining life, and every beat threatened to tear apart the body it was attempting to restore.
Yet it continued beating.
With every pulse, more of Max’s soul returned from the darkness surrounding him. The countless drops that had disappeared into the depths began rising from below, moving backward through the void before entering his body through the closing wound. Memories, emotions, and broken pieces of his existence returned with them, but something warm that had once rested at the center of it all was gradually buried beneath the new heart’s hunger.
"Perhaps now you can win," the woman whispered as her voice softened once again.
"Perhaps now you will finally become strong enough to free me."
The final opening in Max’s chest closed.
His new heart contracted, releasing a pulse powerful enough to force every eye in the darkness to shut at once. Black mist exploded from his body and spread through the surrounding void, swallowing everything until even the woman’s presence could no longer be felt.
After countless months without breath or movement, Max opened his eyes.
Yet the darkness refused to release him.
