"Where am I?" Max asked coldly as his newly opened eyes moved through the darkness surrounding him.

He did not panic upon finding himself suspended inside a place without ground or sky. His gaze calmly searched the empty space, while the black mist covering his restored form moved against him with every powerful contraction of the new heart inside his chest.

"I see you are finally awake," the creator of the system said with a soft laugh.

Her voice came from every direction, but Max turned before its final echo disappeared. All the enormous eyes that had watched his transformation remained closed except for one pair hidden far within the darkness.

The silver pupils were surrounded by rings of changing color, though their faint glow revealed nothing of the face behind them. They shifted when Max looked directly at them, surprised that he had discovered their location so easily.

"Where am I?" Max demanded again.

His quiet voice shook the empty space, causing the mist around him to spread before gathering against his body once more. The woman continued watching him, though her laughter faded when Max extended one hand toward her and the darkness between them began twisting around his fingers.

"I will not ask a third time."

A deep sigh answered him.

"You were slain in battle."

Max’s gaze briefly lost focus as the memories returned. He remembered the two emperors appearing on the battlefield, the man in gold extending a single finger, and Clotilde dropping to her knees after the attack passed through his chest.

"Then I’m dead?" he asked.

"Yes," the woman answered. "But at the same time, you are not."

"What do you mean?"

"Your physical body is lying beneath the ground, buried as a corpse everyone wishes to forget. Your heart was destroyed, your blood stopped moving, and there was nothing left capable of keeping you alive."

"Then why am I here?"

"Because your soul refused to sever its connection to your body."

Faint movement appeared within the darkness, briefly forming the shape of loose soil pressing against a motionless body. Max watched the image without changing his expression until it faded.

"Even after your heart was destroyed, part of your soul continued clinging to what remained of you," the woman explained. "It should have separated completely, but your void magic would not allow that connection to break."

Max looked down at himself.

"The body you see here is not your physical body," she continued before he could ask. "It is the shape your soul remembers, held together by the void and rebuilt around the heart I created. Your corpse remains buried in the living world, but the connection between the two still exists."

No scar remained where the golden attack had passed through his spiritual form, though something unstable continued changing beneath its surface with every beat.

"The true void shines brightest when you are at your emptiest," the woman said. "Your strength, blood, mana, and hope were taken from you upon that battlefield. There was nothing left inside you, and that emptiness finally allowed the void to reveal what it had always been capable of."

Max raised his eyes toward her again.

"It kept me alive?"

"It kept your soul attached to your corpse," she corrected him. "I would not call that living."

"Then what were the drops?"

"Fragments of your soul. Every drop that fell from your wound carried another piece of you into the darkness. The void caught those fragments before they could disappear, but it could not return them without something capable of holding them together."

"And the heart?"

"That was my help."

"What did you do to me?"

"I took the final fragment of your soul and used it as the foundation for a new heart. The void supplied the power, while I forced that power to take a shape capable of sustaining you."

The mist covering Max’s chest briefly thinned, revealing dark veins beneath the surface before concealing them again.

"This heart is not human, nor does it belong to any bloodline you have collected," the woman said. "It is made entirely from the true void, and it now exists inside your soul. When you return, both your soul and the heart will merge with your buried body."

"Can it restore the corpse?"

"The void preserved your connection to it, and I gave you something capable of bringing life back into it," she answered. "Whether the body can survive what you have become is something neither of us can know until you return."

"Then return me to it," Max said without hesitation.

The darkness around the silver eyes remained still.

"Not yet."

Max’s expression hardened. "Why?"

"Because restoring your soul was only the first part of what needed to be done. Your body has remained beneath the ground without blood, breath, or mana for far longer than it should have survived. Even with the void preserving it, forcing your soul back inside without preparation would only kill you again."

"How long have I been here?"

"Time does not pass through this place in the same way it moves through the living world," the woman answered. "You experienced months between the final drops of your soul, but that does not mean the same amount of time passed around your grave."

Max remained silent for a moment before his gaze became colder.

"What happened to Clotilde?"

"I cannot see everything occurring outside while your soul remains separated from the living world."

The mist around Max suddenly grew heavier, spreading from his shoulders and gathering between him and the distant eyes.

"You created the system," he said. "Do not tell me there is something you cannot see."

"There are many things I cannot see, Max, especially now. The system is connected to your soul, and when your presence disappeared from the living world, so did most of what I could observe through you. If you want to know what happened to Clotilde, your kingdom, or the people you left behind, then you will have to return and find them yourself."

"Then stop wasting my time."

The changing rings surrounding her pupils slowed before beginning to rotate in the opposite direction, while the pressure carried by Max’s voice continued traveling through the darkness.

"You truly have changed," she eventually said.

"I was killed because I was weak. Whatever you changed inside me does not matter as long as it prevents that from happening again."

"That is exactly what concerns me."

Max lowered his hand, but the darkness gathered around his fingers remained in place.

"You said my body needs preparation. What else is wrong with it?"

"Death touched more than your heart," the woman answered. "It entered every part of your body the moment the golden emperor’s attack killed you. Normally, your bloodlines would have begun disappearing as soon as your soul separated from the living world, leaving behind nothing more than an empty corpse."

"But my soul never separated from it completely."

"No. The connection remained, and so did the void. It continued moving through your corpse while holding your soul here, leaving death and void pressed against one another throughout the entire time you remained trapped between both worlds."

Faint lines appeared in the darkness between them, one side completely black while the other carried a pale color that looked almost white. The two moved against each other before twisting together and becoming impossible to separate.

"Void and death are not the same power," the woman continued, "but they understand one another better than life ever could. The void represents absolute emptiness, while death creates that emptiness by removing life from everything it touches."

Max watched the pale light disappear into the blackness.

"What happened when you created the heart?"

"I gave both powers somewhere to gather. The true void formed the heart itself, but death had already spread too deeply through your body and soul to be removed. Instead of rejecting it, the new heart absorbed it."

The image between them collapsed as the woman’s voice grew quieter.

"You crossed the boundary between life and death, remained there long enough for your soul to begin falling apart, and then returned with pieces of that boundary trapped inside you. No living creature should be capable of doing such a thing."

Max showed no fear at the warning.

"What does that make me?"

The silver pupils narrowed slightly.

"You are still Max Hollow, although I cannot promise that everything inside you remains human."

"That does not answer my question."

"No," the woman agreed. "It does not."

For the first time since the conversation began, a faint light appeared beneath Max’s skin. It was not the multicolored mana of the Spirit Sovereign, the golden flame, or the purple ice fire he had used before his death. The color was pale and lifeless, moving through his spiritual form beside the black veins created by the void.

Max watched as the unfamiliar power spread across his arms.

"You did not inherit this power from one of your mates, nor did you absorb it from a creature you defeated," the woman explained. "It was created inside you through your own death, which means even I cannot know what abilities it will give you once you return to the living world."

The pale light reached Max’s fingertips and gathered around his claws, causing the nearby darkness to weaken without being consumed.

"You possess another bloodline now," the woman said.

Max looked toward her.

"What bloodline?"

The silver rings around her pupils stopped moving.

"Death."
