Supreme Bloodline Evolution System

Chapter 227: A Heart Without Mercy

"A Death Bloodline?" Max repeated as the pale light continued moving beneath his skin. "Is this some kind of joke?"

A short laugh nearly escaped him, though there was little genuine amusement behind it. Had he not encountered bloodlines capable of controlling spirits, transforming entire bodies, and bending several forms of magic together, he would have ridiculed the creator until she regretted ever revealing herself to him.

"So what does that mean?" Max asked, opening one claw as the pale power gathered around its sharp tips. "Can I now control my own life and death, or have you simply turned me into some kind of ghoul?"

"Possibly both," she replied coldly. "As I already told you, even I cannot know what the bloodline will make possible until you return."

Max raised his gaze toward the silver eyes.

"That is not much of an explanation."

"You have only just received the bloodline, and it was created through circumstances that should have been impossible. It connects you to death, but how that connection develops will depend upon what happens after you return to your physical body."

"So this connection to the new heart works like this, doesn’t it?"

Before the creator could answer, the entire space began trembling.

The darkness surrounding Max spread away from him in violent waves before reversing and rushing back toward his body. The force disturbed the countless eyes hidden throughout the void, causing them to open one after another as their attention returned to the man suspended between them.

For the first time, surprise appeared within the creator’s silver pupils.

Max had not waited for her guidance.

He closed his eyes and pressed one hand against the center of his chest, reaching past the spiritual form surrounding him until his awareness touched the unstable substance contained within the new heart. Cold void magic spun around its center, while the newly formed power of death moved along its outer edges, repeatedly entering the darkness before separating from it again.

The two powers resisted one another, yet neither attempted to destroy the other.

Max tightened his fingers against his chest.

The void around him responded immediately. It gathered beneath his feet, stretched above his head, and formed enormous spirals around his body, each one rotating in a different direction as he forced the new connection to obey him.

"You should not be able to reach it so quickly," the creator said.

"The trial I endured inside the Spirit Sovereign’s realm taught me how to recognize powers that do not fully belong to my body," Max replied in a flat tone.

The pale light spread farther across his arms before being swallowed beneath the black mist. Wherever both powers touched, the space surrounding Max weakened, forming small openings that disappeared before anything could pass through them.

The creator remained silent.

Max continued reaching deeper until the heart’s unstable rhythm began following his will. The sensation should have frightened him, because one mistake could have scattered the fragments of his soul once again, yet his face remained calm as the darkness thickened around him.

"It suits me," he eventually said. "Perhaps remaining ruthless is better."

The silver eyes narrowed.

"I care less with every passing second," Max continued, speaking aloud as though the woman was no longer part of the conversation. "Clotilde, Agnia, Rosalia... I still want them to live. I want them beside me, safe beneath the kingdom I created, and I want their strength to serve me when I return."

The names produced a faint reaction from somewhere deep inside him, but it was quieter than he remembered. The fear he had once felt at the possibility of losing them no longer controlled his thoughts, while the desperation that had forced him to rush blindly into Frankindia felt distant and foolish.

"But do I still love them?" Max asked as the black mist slowly covered the lower half of his face. "That is a good question."

The creator listened without interrupting him.

"Love does not belong inside a heart made from the void, yet at the same time, it is one of the few things capable of filling that emptiness. Somewhere deep inside me, it is still there. I can feel what remains of it, but it no longer controls every decision I make."

The enormous spirals surrounding Max slowed as he opened his eyes. Pale death energy moved through their black surface, causing the countless pupils watching him to pull farther away.

"I will not rush blindly into another kingdom because someone I care about might be in danger. I will not face enemies whose strength I do not understand, and I will never again mistake victories over dying rulers for proof that I have reached the peak of this world."

The creator’s changing rings stopped moving as she listened.

"I allowed my emotions to rule me, and they led me directly into a battle I could not win. Then I allowed the void to consume my mind when that battle turned against me, nearly destroying the same city I came to protect."

Max lowered his hand from his chest.

"That weakness ended with my death."

The darkness gathering around him pressed against his spiritual form, no longer hiding or resisting him. It moved with his will, becoming part of every gesture as the pale power of death continued flowing beneath it.

"I will allow the void to become part of me, and in return, I will become part of it. I will understand its hunger, control it, and use it until I possess enough power to flatten every kingdom standing between me and my goals."

The coldness in Max’s expression disappeared for a brief moment when he remembered the armored boot of the Crimson Horde Emperor pressing his face into the stone. Rage surged through the new heart, causing the void surrounding him to collapse inward before erupting again with enough force to shake the entire space.

"I remember their laughter," Max said as his claws slowly closed. "I remember the emperor grinding my face against the ground, Augustus speaking about sending my head back to Voidstar, and Henry revealing that Clotilde had been used to draw me into their trap."

His voice remained quiet, but the countless eyes surrounding him began closing as the pressure continued rising.

"I will return to them when I am ready, and when that day comes, I will slaughter every enemy without mercy."
