The more Max reached into his new power and the magic that had shaped his heart, the more violently the realm of darkness trembled around him. The void no longer resisted his presence or remained at a distance. It rushed toward his spiritual form from every direction as though it had always belonged to him, forcing itself into every empty space within his soul and attempting to fill the emptiness where his old heart had once existed.
His spiritual form became darker with every passing moment until it resembled a figure cut from the night itself. Even the pale energy of the Death Bloodline disappeared beneath its surface, leaving only brief colorless flashes moving through the blackness whenever his new heart contracted.
The mana container within his soul began expanding as well. The larger it became, the stronger the pull surrounding Max grew, allowing him to draw magic toward himself faster than ever before.
The creator watched without interfering as the entire realm bent toward him.
A loud pop suddenly traveled through the darkness.
Max vanished without leaving so much as a fragment of mist behind.
For several moments, the system creator remained silent. The silver rings surrounding her pupils slowed before disappearing as the enormous eyes closed around the empty space where Max had been floating.
She released a deep sigh, but when she spoke, clear amusement had returned to her voice.
"Finally. That was exactly what I needed to push him into growing faster."
The darkness gradually settled around her, hiding the countless eyes once again.
"He may become capable of helping me far sooner than I expected, and when that time comes... all of creation itself will burn."
Max experienced an unusual sensation the moment his awareness returned.
He felt light.
Far too light.
The sound of metal clanking repeatedly reached his ears, accompanied by heavy footsteps striking the ground at an uneven pace. Armor plates scraped against one another, weapons knocked against shields, and several men talked loudly nearby as they traveled without any concern for who might hear them.
Max’s eyelids remained heavy, while a constant swaying motion made it difficult for him to understand what was happening. He had expected to awaken beneath the ground inside his buried corpse, yet something was carrying him forward and holding him high above everyone surrounding him.
He forced his eyes open.
The world moved from side to side as his vision adjusted to the sunlight. Max could see armored shoulders, helmets, and the tops of several crimson and golden banners below him. He attempted to turn his neck, only to discover that he could not feel anything beneath his jaw.
A long wooden pole had been driven through the remains of his severed neck and was holding his head high above the soldiers.
Max remained silent as he listened.
"I wonder how the dragons will react when they see their ruler’s head brought back to them on a stick?" one of the soldiers shouted before releasing a loud laugh. "Bahaha! I hope they kneel before we even reach their walls."
"I bet their women taste good," another man answered from somewhere behind him. "I want to see how those sluts who were fucking Maximus bounce on our cocks once they understand that nobody is coming to save them."
Several soldiers laughed together, their armor rattling as they continued marching.
"Just wait until we reach Voidstar," a third warrior said. "If the head hasn’t rotted by then, we will give them a good show before we take the city."
Max listened calmly as the pieces began falling into place.
The creator had told him that his physical body was buried, and it appeared she had spoken the truth. The emperors had buried what remained of his corpse while keeping his head as a trophy to send back to Voidstar. When his soul returned to the living world, it had followed the connection to the only part of his body that was no longer beneath the ground.
Instead of returning to his corpse, Max had awakened inside his severed head.
It made everything far more complicated.
However, he was alive, and the fact that he could see, hear, and think without possessing a heart, lungs, or body could only be the work of his Death Bloodline.
A slow smirk spread across his lips.
"Hey, fuckers!" Max roared.
His voice did not come from lungs or a throat. Death magic vibrated through the remains of his neck and carried the sound across the road with enough force to make every soldier stop at once.
Confused faces turned in every direction as hands tightened around sword hilts and spears were pulled from armored shoulders.
"Who said that?" one of them demanded.
"Up here!" Max shouted.
Every pair of eyes slowly rose toward the severed head held above them.
Several soldiers went pale. One man dropped his shield, while another stumbled backward and crashed into the warrior behind him.
"Yes, up here," Max continued, glaring down at them from the top of the pole. "Now put me down, you pieces of shit, before I slaughter every last one of you."
The soldier carrying the pole released it immediately, his instincts overwhelming every trace of discipline as his hands flew away from the wood.
"Ghost!" he screamed, feeling the strength disappear from his legs.
Max watched the ground rush toward him and realized the flaw in his command a moment too late.
His expression became visibly irritated.
"Not like that..."
The pole struck the road first, and Max’s head tore free from its end before slamming into the dirt. He rolled several times across the ground, his vision repeatedly switching between the sky, armored boots, and loose stones until he finally stopped on the side of his face.
The violent movement left him dizzy, quite literally making his head spin as dirt pressed against his cheek.
The soldiers exchanged frightened and confused looks.
There were approximately twenty of them, forming a small escort unit made from both Crimson Horde and Imperial Court warriors. Their task had been simple: carry the head of the fallen king back to Voidstar and use it as proof that the era of Maximus Hollow had ended.
Now that same head was glaring at them from the ground.
