Max could still feel a faint connection to the rest of his body, but the sensation came from an enormous distance, so weak that he could not determine its exact location. It resembled a thin thread stretched across half the continent, pulling gently upon his soul without revealing where its other end had been buried.

"Ah... I should have left one of them alive to tell me where my body is," Max cursed as he looked across the blood-covered road.

Max stared at the corpses for several seconds before releasing another annoyed sigh.

"No matter. I simply need to return to the battlefield."

The four void blades beneath his head shifted against the stones as he turned toward the distant mountains, following the faint pull he believed would eventually lead him back toward Frankindia.

"By now, the two emperors must have already left. They have no reason to remain there after defeating me and conquering the capital. As for everyone else, I imagine they left an army behind to occupy Parahdon and control what remains of Frankindia."

The thought of returning directly to the capital caused the blades supporting Max to pause. Charging openly into another enemy army while he possessed nothing more than his head would be repeating the same mistake that had gotten him killed, and this time he had no intention of allowing his anger to overcome what remained of his judgment.

"If I do not want them to discover that I survived, I will need to be careful."

Fire gathered beneath Max’s severed neck.

The four void blades dissolved into black mist before a concentrated stream of golden flame erupted downward. The force launched his head into the air so violently that the road cracked beneath him, sending dust and loose stones scattering across the surrounding corpses.

Within moments, Max had become little more than a speck high above the ground.

Fire Dragon magic continued propelling him forward like a small rocket, while thin layers of black mist wrapped around the flame and prevented most of its light from spreading across the sky. He climbed until villages and forests appeared small beneath him, then followed the direction from which the soldiers had been traveling.

The landscape looked familiar.

Wide fields stretched between patches of woodland, narrow roads connected old stone settlements, and several watchtowers bearing Britanian banners stood upon the surrounding hills. The architecture was unmistakable, allowing Max to understand that the soldiers carrying his head had already crossed out of Frankindia and entered the Kingdom of Britana.

His flight slowed slightly.

"I will have to visit Caratacus after retrieving my body."

Max’s expression darkened.

"I know you made that promise because you expected me to die," Max muttered as the fire beneath him strengthened. "You knew what kind of monsters ruled beyond your borders, yet you watched me leave without saying a word."

Whether Caratacus had deliberately sent him toward death or merely lacked the courage to explain the difference between the Dragon Region and the great human empires no longer mattered to Max.

The king had allowed him to walk blindly into a battle against enemies whose strength existed far beyond anything he had encountered, and Max had paid for that silence with his life.

"I will remember this favor, Caratacus. One day, I will repay it in blood."

The fire exploded more violently beneath his neck and launched him farther across the sky.

Most people below never noticed him. Those who happened to look upward saw only a distant streak of golden light crossing the blue sky and disappearing toward the horizon before they could understand what they were watching.

Several farmers stopped working and pointed toward him, mistaking Max for a falling star despite the sun shining brightly above them.

None could have imagined that the light belonged to the severed head of a dead king flying back toward the battlefield where the rest of his body had been buried.

Several days passed as Max traveled back toward Frankindia, crossing the human lands as little more than a severed head propelled through the sky by Fire Dragon magic.

The journey gave him plenty of time to think about what he would do next, but more than anything, it allowed him to think about Henry.

Once again, the old man had ruined his plans. Once again, Henry had been waiting at the center of everything, manipulating events from the shadows until Max walked directly into the trap prepared for him. He had used Clotilde as bait, delivered Max to the two emperors, and watched without concern as Augustus destroyed his heart.

"The old man will suffer a heart attack when he sees me alive," Max said with a smirk.

He wanted to stand before Henry, watch the confidence disappear from his face, and stare directly into the old man’s eyes while his claws broke through his chest and gouged out the frozen heart inside him.

Thoughts of slaughter continued passing through Max’s mind throughout the journey, becoming more comforting and tempting with every hour.

Soon afterward, the familiar capital became visible in the distance.

Parahdon remained at the summit of its towering mountain, but much of the city had been left in ruins. Only a few of its black defensive towers continued standing. Long golden banners now covered their damaged walls, while enormous symbols of the Imperial Court Empire hung above the surviving gates.

Even the Frankindian crest had been torn down.

The sight made it obvious that the Imperial Court had claimed control of the capital once the battle ended. There were no crimson banners anywhere upon the mountain, suggesting that the Crimson Horde had been given no authority over the city despite spending years attempting to conquer Frankindia, just as Clotilde had once explained to him.

He did not need to search long for his body.

A wide mound of disturbed earth stood beyond the ruined outer wall.

The ground surrounding it had been covered in manure, while piles of human waste had been deliberately thrown across the disturbed soil. Judging by how thoroughly the grave had been defiled, many of the soldiers occupying Parahdon had likely taken turns humiliating the corpse of the fallen dragon king.

A broken Frankindian spear had been driven into the center of the mound, and Max’s damaged black coat hung from it like a flag marking the location of something despised.

His body was beneath it.

Max floated above the grave. His expression remained calm while he looked upon the filth covering the place where his corpse had been buried, showing none of the fury that would once have sent him rushing blindly toward the nearest soldiers.

He had already learned what uncontrolled anger cost him.

This time, there would be no reckless charge against enemies he did not understand. He would retrieve his body, discover what the Death Bloodline had done to it, and leave before the Imperial Court learned that Maximus Hollow had returned from the dead.

However, before fleeing back to Voidstar, he intended to leave the occupying army with something to remember him by.

Max’s eyes moved toward the golden banners hanging above Parahdon as a cold smile slowly spread across his face.

There would be a slaughter tonight.
