Max did not wait any longer.
He rushed toward the grave as void magic gathered around his head, covering him beneath a thick layer of darkness and hiding every trace of his presence from the observing eyes upon the walls. None of the guards stationed inside or around the city noticed him landing beside the mound, nor did they hear anything when the black mist pushed through the manure and began digging into the ground.
The soil moved quickly beneath his magic, separating without making a sound before gathering into piles around the grave. It did not take long before Max opened a hole large enough to reveal the body buried beneath it.
"There I am, in all my ugliness," Max laughed as he looked down at himself.
His corpse remained surprisingly well preserved, though the skin had become pale beneath the dirt covering it. The enormous opening Augustus had left in his chest was still there, while the torn remains of his neck showed where the Imperial soldiers had removed his head. His body had been thrown into the grave without care, its arms twisted beneath its back and its damaged wings folded against one another at an uncomfortable angle.
With a single thought, the fingers of his right hand twitched.
The movement was weak, but it proved that the connection between his soul and body had become stronger now that they were close to one another. Max tried again, causing several claws to dig into the damp soil even though his head remained separated from the rest of him.
"If any of my women saw me like this, they would probably lose their minds."
The four void blades supporting Max carefully carried him into the grave. He positioned himself beside the corpse before allowing the limbs to shorten, slowly lowering his head toward the torn neck until the two damaged ends were almost touching.
"Now... how do I reattach myself?"
He barely finished speaking before a powerful force pulled his head downward.
It felt as though a piece of metal had been drawn toward an enormous magnet. The remains of his neck slammed together, and immense pain immediately shot through his body as broken bones, severed nerves, and torn muscles began reconnecting.
Max’s eyes widened.
His entire corpse convulsed inside the grave while his fingers curled violently into the soil. Every muscle that had remained asleep since his death suddenly contracted at once, forcing his arms and legs to twist against the dirt as feeling returned to them in painful waves.
His wings spread beneath the ground and struck the walls of the grave, sending loose soil falling across his face.
The flesh around Max’s neck stretched and joined together, leaving black veins spreading beneath the skin as void magic filled every damaged part that could no longer heal on its own. His spine shifted with several loud cracks before locking back into place, finally allowing him to feel the rest of his body as something belonging to him again.
Then his lungs expanded for the first time since his death.
A burst of golden flame escaped Max’s mouth alongside dirt and dust, nearly setting the inside of the grave on fire. He immediately began coughing violently, his chest shaking as he desperately tried to expel everything that had entered his lungs while he remained buried.
"Damn... bastards..." Max forced out between coughs.
The new Void Heart spun wildly inside his chest. Black mist poured from it in waves, spreading through his veins and forcing the remaining organs to awaken one after another. His blood began moving again, his muscles tightened beneath his skin, and dark flesh slowly grew across the hole as his body continued rebuilding itself around the strange heart now keeping him alive.
"System, are you there?" Max asked while the Void Heart continued forcing power through his recovering body.
A familiar translucent window appeared before his face.
[Master.]
"Great. Check my body and find out more about this damn Death Bloodline."
[All right. I will see what I can find.]
The system window remained floating above him for a long time without showing anything else. Max continued coughing dirt from his lungs while waiting, occasionally forcing his stiff fingers and legs to move so they would recover faster.
New words finally began appearing across the screen.
[This is what I discovered: Your Death Bloodline remains dormant and requires a sacrifice to awaken. The exact requirements are unclear, but the sacrifice will most likely involve the deaths of other living beings.]
[Once awakened, the bloodline should grant you powers related to controlling death. However, I cannot determine the exact abilities because neither I nor my creator produced this bloodline. It was created inside you when the powers of death and the true void merged.]
"There is something even you do not know?" Max laughed through the pain. "Now that is a surprise."
The system had become noticeably more sentient since his death. Its answers no longer sounded as cold as they once had, and it now spoke to him more like a servant capable of understanding his situation instead of a mindless tool following simple instructions.
Max could not tell whether the creator had changed it while rebuilding his soul or whether the system had evolved naturally alongside him.
"Can the Death Bloodline be combined with my other bloodlines through the skill?"
The window flickered once.
[Uncertain.]
"Well, thank you for that useful answer."
Max placed both palms against the bottom of the grave and pushed himself upright. His legs felt heavy beneath him, and several muscles cramped the moment they were forced to support his weight, but the weakness disappeared quickly as the Void Heart continued spreading power throughout his body.
He looked down at his arms before allowing his bloodlines to react.
Dark scales covered his skin as his body expanded, turning pitch-black while two familiar horns emerged from his head. His wings opened behind him and struck the sides of the grave, while a thick tail pushed through the soil gathering around his legs. Black claws replaced his fingers, and the pressure of his dragon hybrid form forced several cracks through the ground above him.
"Heh, I still have it." Max felt relieved. After all, he had worked hard to gain those powers, and losing them would have dealt a painful blow to his pride.
Max returned to his human form, allowing the wings, horns, tail, and scales to disappear. His body was still covered in dirt, his clothes were badly damaged, and the skin across his chest had only recently closed, but none of that mattered.
"I will not need that form for the remaining trash inside this city."
He bent his knees and jumped.
The ground beneath his feet cracked as Max launched himself out of the grave, easily clearing the deep hole before landing upon the soil above it. He rolled his shoulders several times and moved his neck from side to side, producing a series of unpleasant cracks as the last stiffness left his body.
A sickening smile slowly appeared upon his lips.
"Hey! What are you doing out here at night?"
One of the Imperial Court soldiers stationed near the outer wall had finally noticed him. The man stepped away from the others and placed one hand upon the sword hanging from his waist, while several nearby guards turned to see who had caught his attention.
"Are you Frankindian?" the soldier demanded as he drew his weapon. "Get the fuck back inside the city! Who gave you permission to walk around freely?"
Max continued walking slowly, taking his time as more Imperial soldiers gathered ahead of him. None recognized his face beneath the dirt, and none noticed the thin layer of void magic spreading from every step he took.
The darkness moved across the ground, slipped beneath the walls, and continued flowing into the streets of Parahdon.
"Are you deaf?" the soldier shouted as golden mana gathered around his sword. "I said stop!"
Max stopped several meters away from him.
Within a split second, every trace of mana disappeared from the surrounding air.
The golden light covering the soldier’s sword vanished. Enchanted lanterns across the walls went dark, while the magic stored inside the repaired defensive formations was ripped away before anyone could activate them.
All of it rushed toward Max.
His expanded mana container swallowed the power hungrily, taking everything without showing the slightest sign of becoming full. Black mist continued pouring across Parahdon, climbing its surviving towers and spreading over the ruined walls until the darkness met high above the capital.
A massive black sphere formed around the entire city.
The Imperial soldiers looked upward as the stars disappeared behind it, their earlier anger quickly giving way to confusion. Shouts spread from the walls and streets as thousands of citizens and warriors realized that every path out of Parahdon had been sealed.
Max’s smile widened.
The city had become a cage, trapping every Frankindian citizen and Imperial warrior inside with the beast that intended to sacrifice them to awaken his new Death Bloodline.
