Clovis’s scream grew weaker as the void continued draining mana and lifeforce from his body. His legs hung beneath him without strength, while his silver eyes remained fixed upon the place where Augustus had destroyed Max’s chest.

"How..." Clovis struggled to speak as blood ran down his chin. "How are you alive?"

Max stopped the draining before the king died, leaving only enough strength inside him to remain conscious.

"Your heart was destroyed," Clovis continued, his breathing becoming faster as he stared at the flesh that had grown across the wound. "You were supposed to be dead..." His eyes remained fixed upon Max’s repaired chest. As far as Clovis knew, nobody returned from the dead.

"I was," Max answered without showing any emotion. "Now tell me—where is Clotilde?"

"I do not know."

Black mist wrapped around the king’s right hand and bent two of his fingers backward until the bones snapped. Clovis cried out and tried to pull away, but the darkness holding his body did not allow him to move even slightly.

"Try again," Max said.

"I do not know!"

Break him. He will speak.

The voice had grown louder after consuming the souls throughout Parahdon, pushing Max to stop asking questions and take whatever remained inside the old king.

Max ignored it for the moment and sent the void beneath Clovis’s skin. The darkness moved through his arm, wrapped around the broken bones, and began pulling them apart from the surrounding flesh.

Clovis screamed until his voice cracked.

"Did the Imperial Court take her?" Max asked. "Did Henry take her with him?"

"No! They were looking for her!" Clovis shouted, forcing the words out quickly before Max could hurt him again. "They searched the palace, the walls, and every building around the battlefield. And that dragon, yes, yes—Henry, he questioned my people himself. Even he did not know where she was."

Max released the bones in his hand and moved the darkness toward his chest instead. The king immediately began gasping as the void wrapped around one lung and slowly compressed it.

"Where did she go?"

"Nobody saw!" Clovis shook his head as much as the mist allowed.

The answer angered Max. Darkness tightened around Clovis’s lung until something tore inside it, causing blood to spill from the king’s mouth as his body jerked in the air.

Max continued asking the same questions, but the answers never changed. Clotilde had not returned to the palace or been taken among the prisoners.

She had vanished without anyone noticing.

Henry had even remained in the capital to search for her. He had used Clotilde to draw Max out of the Dragon Region, yet she escaped before he could take her afterward.

Clovis no longer possessed enough strength to lie. Max felt the same fear in his heartbeat every time he repeated the answer.

Clotilde had truly fled somewhere on her own.

Max pulled the darkness from the king’s lung and allowed him to breathe again. Clovis coughed blood across the floor beneath him, his entire body trembling as he desperately swallowed air.

"I told you everything," he groaned. "Let me down."

"You ordered her to remain inside this palace."

Clovis slowly raised his head. "I was her king. She was supposed to obey me."

"She came outside for me while all of you stayed here."

"What were we supposed to do?" Clovis suddenly shouted despite the pain. "You could not defeat them! Augustus killed you with one finger, and you expected my guards to run outside and throw away their lives?"

Max stared at him in silence.

"Frankindia was already lost," Clovis continued, his voice weakening again. "We could not save you. We could not even save ourselves."

"Then you should have died with your kingdom."

Yes. Take him now.

Max jerked his neck to the side. "You do not order me around. I will kill him when I choose. Shut up."

Clovis watched Max talk to himself, his eyes even more terrified now.

Max raised one hand, and the void holding Clovis began pulling inward. The remaining mana inside the king’s body rushed out through his skin, followed by his blood and lifeforce. His white hair fell loose from his head, his face dried around his skull, and the silver color disappeared from his eyes.

Clovis tried to scream, but his lungs no longer carried enough air to create a sound.

His pale soul was torn from the dying body and dragged toward Max. The Death Bloodline swallowed it before the corpse broke apart into black dust, leaving the crown to fall alone and strike the floor.

The voice released a quiet laugh inside Max’s mind.

More.

"Shut it."

The new marking upon his Magic Soul grew longer after consuming Clovis, pressing harder against the limit of the Rune Realm. Max felt the change but ignored it.

Searching Frankindia without a direction would lead him nowhere. However, he knew exactly where to find someone else who had angered him.

"Caratacus," Max muttered as he turned toward the ruined entrance of the throne room. "You should have warned me."

All the darkness covering Parahdon rushed back toward him. It left behind empty streets and houses before entering his body together with the last mana it had taken from the capital.

Max launched himself through the damaged palace roof and flew toward Britana.

Caratacus had asked for an alliance, offered Senuna to him, and promised to become his vassal if the Imperial Court was defeated, yet he allowed Max to leave without explaining that Augustus could kill him with a single finger.

Several hours later, Max crossed the Britanian border and saw the capital ahead.

He did not slow down or hide his presence. Black mist spread across the sky behind him, causing people throughout the city to look upward as he flew directly toward the castle.

The defensive formations activated before he reached it. Several barriers formed over the towers, while soldiers gathered inside the outer courtyard and aimed enchanted weapons toward the approaching darkness.

Max crashed through the first barrier without stopping.

The formation shattered around him, and he landed inside the courtyard with enough force to throw the nearest soldiers from their feet. Broken stone flew in every direction as Max rose from the crater and looked toward the castle entrance.

"Where is Caratacus?" he demanded.

Several soldiers recognized his face, while others stared at his repaired chest and whispered that King Maximus was supposed to be dead.

Their commander pushed through the group with his sword drawn.

"King Maximus or not, you entered this castle by force. Stand down and wait for His Majesty to decide what happens next—"

Black mist entered his mouth before he finished speaking.

The commander’s body lifted from the ground as every trace of mana was pulled from him. His sword lost its light, his armor became dull, and his face sank inward before Max threw the empty remains toward the soldiers standing behind him.

"I asked where your king is."

The soldiers attacked.

Max allowed the void to fill the courtyard. Spears and arrows vanished inside the darkness, while the warriors holding them were dragged from their positions and thrown against the walls. Some died from the impact, while those who survived were drained until only empty armor remained across the stone.

More guards rushed from the castle, sounding the alarm as they formed around the entrance. Max continued walking toward them without changing his pace.

The void ripped mana from their bodies, broke through their formations, and swallowed the spells released from the windows above. Max killed them group after group, leaving the courtyard covered in shattered weapons and empty armor.

Do not stop. There are more inside.

The castle doors closed before Max reached them, and several layers of defensive magic spread across the reinforced wood.

Max extended one hand and drained the formations until every rune went dark. Black mist struck the doors immediately afterward, tearing them from their hinges and throwing them into the entrance hall.

The knights waiting behind them were crushed beneath the wood. Those standing farther back raised their shields and charged, only for the void to pass around their defenses and enter through the openings in their helmets.

Max walked between them as they fell.

Servants, officials, and guards fled through the hall while more knights rushed down the staircases. Max killed anyone who approached him, sending darkness through every corridor until screams spread across the castle.

He followed the strongest concentration of mana toward the upper floors, knowing it belonged to Caratacus and the royal guards protecting him. Every defensive group gathered along the way was swallowed before it could slow him, while those attempting to escape were pulled backward and drained of everything the voice inside Max desired.

By the time he reached the final corridor, blood covered the walls and empty armor filled the staircase behind him.

The enormous doors leading toward the throne room remained closed. Max could feel Caratacus beyond them, surrounded by several warriors preparing to defend their king.

Darkness gathered around Max’s hand as he approached.

Before he could tear the doors apart, one of them opened from the other side.

Senuna stepped into the corridor.

She stopped the moment she saw Max standing among the bodies and black mist. Her face lost all color as her eyes moved toward his chest, searching for the hole that Augustus had left behind.

"Maximus..." Senuna whispered as she took one step backward. "They said you were dead."

Max stopped in front of her.
