Supreme Bloodline Evolution System
Chapter 236: Are You Still the Man I Accepted as My Ruler? The door behind Max slammed open moments after Caratacus’s verbal explosion. A young man with green eyes and long brown hair rushed into the room, only to stop the moment he saw the man standing tall before the king. His eyes trembled with disbelief, while his hands slowly curled into fists at his sides.
Max did not pay him any attention, nor did Caratacus, who was still struggling to contain his fury. However, the young man’s next words caused something within Max’s clouded eyes to shift.
"Max, enough is enough. Let’s go home."
William stood behind him in his humanoid form, his clenched fists beginning to tremble. He had remained in Britana as a diplomat ever since Max sent him there, representing the very man he had once despised with every part of his being.
When news of Max’s death reached him, William did not know how he was supposed to feel. There had been a time when he tried to defy Max with everything he had, seeing him only as the stranger who stole his future, took away the woman he loved, and claimed the home that should have belonged to him. Max had destroyed the life William believed he was meant to have, leaving him with nothing except anger and humiliation.
Yet Max was also the man who took their small, insignificant tribe and transformed it into the greatest kingdom William had ever seen. He had protected their people, given them a future far greater than anything William could have built for them, and forced William to confront the painful truth that beneath all his resentment, he had come to respect Max with all of his heart.
Now, seeing him alive should have filled William with relief.
Instead, as he looked at Max’s hollow eyes and the cold darkness surrounding him, William felt as though the man who returned from death was only a shadow of the king he had once known.
"William..." A sudden pain throbbed through Max’s temples, forcing his eyes to narrow.
Kill him... He has always seen you as a nobody. Have you forgotten how he tried to kill you while you were still powerless? He is jealous of you, of everything you possess. Keep him alive, and sooner or later, he will stab you in the back. Kill William. Rid yourself of every weakness you still have...
The mysterious voice returned, more cruel and insistent than ever. Yet beneath its malice, it sounded strangely unsteady.
"Leave..." Max shook his head and pressed one hand against his temple, attempting to suppress the voice clawing through his mind. "Go home first... There are still some things I must finish here."
"I’m not going anywhere without you, brother." William took another careful step forward, his trembling eyes fixed on Max. "You’re alive... You’re actually alive. We must return together. Rosalia is waiting for you. I know she must be devastated after believing you were dead..."
Max remained silent, but his fingers pressed harder against his temple.
"Do you remember that you’re going to be a father, Max? You have a family waiting for you, and an entire kingdom that needs its king. Let’s go home. There has already been enough slaughter. This isn’t..."
William slowly reached toward Max’s shoulder, hoping that a single touch might be enough to bring back the man he once knew.
"Leave!"
Void magic erupted from Max’s hand before William could touch him. The darkness crashed into William’s chest and sent him flying backward through the door.
Caratacus watched everything unfold, unable to move even a single finger, much less force a word from his throat. Max continued draining him without pause, drawing away so much of his strength that the sounds of the room gradually faded, leaving only the weak, uneven beating of his own heart echoing somewhere in the back of his mind.
Each beat sounded quieter than the last.
Caratacus knew that he had almost no time left. Whatever strength remained within his body was rapidly disappearing, and once his heart finally fell silent, there would be nothing left of him for Max to drain.
Then, without warning, Max stopped.
The force pulling the life and magic out of Caratacus vanished, allowing him to drag a thin, broken breath into his lungs. Max staggered slightly and began shaking his head continuously, striking the side of his temple with the heel of his palm as though he were trying to dislodge something buried deep inside his skull.
"Get out..." he muttered through clenched teeth. "Get out of me..."
We have to kill them all. We need to grow stronger, Max. Think about it. If you remain soft, those you love will continue to die. You cannot protect anything while burdening yourself with mercy. Kill the trash so that you can protect your gems.
Max’s hand suddenly stopped against his temple.
His eyes widened slightly, as though the voice’s words had finally made him understand something he had been refusing to accept. The pain twisting his expression slowly disappeared, replaced by an unsettling stillness as he lowered his hand and raised his head.
His cold, predatory gaze settled upon Caratacus once again.
The king’s faint relief disappeared instantly.
"Are you still the man I accepted as my ruler?"
A cold voice echoed from behind Max, followed by a drastic drop in the room’s temperature. Frost spread across the floor and walls as a torrent of purple ice flames rushed toward his back, carrying enough force to freeze everything in its path.
Max did not turn around.
He merely raised one finger, and the purple flames changed direction before they could touch him, twisting into a narrow stream that flowed directly into his fingertip. Within moments, the entire attack had been absorbed, leaving behind nothing but a thin layer of frost covering the room.
William walked toward him through the lingering cold. His clothes were torn, and blood covered much of his body after being thrown across the room, yet he continued moving without hesitation. White dragon scales now covered his skin, while the rest of his body had transformed fully into his hybrid form. His hands had become claws, his eyes had narrowed into draconic slits, and every breath that escaped his mouth carried a faint trail of freezing mist.
Max finally turned his head and narrowed his eyes at him.
Something shifted deep within Max the moment he saw William approaching. A violent desire to kill surged through his body, causing even his unnaturally cold blood to begin boiling within his veins.
"You gave us all of this power. You made us stronger than we ever could have become without you," William continued, forcing each word through the pain. "I still don’t understand how you did it, but I know that I owe you my life. All of us do."
He stopped several steps away from Max, his claws slowly tightening at his sides.
"And yet, I cannot allow you to continue doing this. If you refuse to let this matter go and return with me, then I will return alone. I will take control of Voidstar myself, and I will protect everything we built."
William’s gaze remained fixed upon Max, but his next words emerged far more quietly.
"Only then can I protect it from... him."
The conflict in William’s eyes was impossible to hide. He had already watched one man he admired lose himself to power and madness. There had been a time when he believed Henry was the greatest leader he would ever know, a man worthy of his complete respect, until the day William finally saw how rotten he had become beneath the image everyone else admired.
Then Max appeared.
At first, William hated him more than anyone. Yet over time, Max became far more than another figure for him to follow. He became his ruler, his brother, and eventually something close to a god in William’s eyes. Max had taken everything William thought he knew and created something greater from its ruins, earning a place in William’s heart that even Henry had never truly possessed.
But now, as William looked into Max’s empty eyes and felt the murderous power surrounding him, he could see the same history beginning to repeat itself right before him.
This time, however, William did not know whether he was supposed to save the man he considered his brother or bring him down before Voidstar suffered for what he had become.
"It’s as if you’ve lost all of your humanity..." William said, his voice trembling despite the cold resolve in his eyes. "You’ve become heartless. Just like Henry."
Max’s eyes widened.
For several seconds, he merely stared at William, unable to believe what he had just heard. He had worked tirelessly to build Voidstar from nothing. He had protected its people, strengthened them, given them homes, and created a kingdom where they could live without kneeling before anyone.
And now William was comparing him to Henry, the very man who had tormented him and treated the lives of others as though they meant nothing. A walking psychopath who had slaughtered and betrayed without remorse.
"I’m like... Henry?" Max asked, his voice falling dangerously low.
He slowly turned to face William fully. Then, with a single motion of his hand, he released the void magic still buried within Caratacus.
The king’s body exploded before William’s eyes as the void erupted from within him, spraying blood across the room and leaving nothing behind that could still be called a living man.
"I am nothing like him!" Max roared.
Void magic exploded from his body in every direction. The walls trembled beneath the pressure, the remaining furniture shattered, and William was forced to drive his claws into the floor to keep himself from being thrown backward once again.
