Chapter 237: I Am Not Your Servant

Max continued breathing heavily, his void heart pulsing with so much power that his head began to spin. Each beat sent another violent surge through his body, filling his veins with darkness and spreading far beyond the limits of what he could control.

"I am nothing like him. Nothing..." he repeated, his voice becoming increasingly unstable as William’s words continued echoing through his mind. "I am nothing like Henry..."

He repeated it again and again, no longer realizing how much damage he was causing to the castle around him. His void magic continued pouring from his body, crawling across the floor before spreading into the walls and ceiling. It devoured everything it touched, draining away the mana within the ancient stone before consuming the material itself.

The remaining furniture crumbled into dark dust, while golden decorations were torn from the walls and swallowed before they could strike the floor. Cracks spread through the white pillars supporting the castle, growing wider each time Max’s void heart released another pulse of power.

The destruction quickly spread beyond the room.

Darkness poured into the surrounding corridors, drawing the mana out of every defensive formation and magical artifact it encountered. Enchanted lights flickered before going dark, and the entire castle began trembling as its foundations gradually weakened.

Yet Max remained at the center of it all, his hands clenched at his sides and his head lowered as he continued denying William’s accusation.

"I protected them..." Max muttered. "I built everything they have. I gave them a future... I am nothing like him."

William stared at Max for several more seconds, struggling against the force pulling at the mana inside his own body. The purple light within his draconic eyes flickered, while the white scales covering his arms gradually lost their shine. Even his hybrid form was becoming difficult to maintain as Max’s void continued draining everything within its reach.

Part of William still wanted to approach him. He wanted to strike Max, shout at him, or do anything that might force him to remember the people waiting for him in Voidstar.

However, the man standing before him was no longer listening.

William could see the darkness tightening around Max’s body, growing more violent with every passing second. If he remained there, Max would eventually send him to an early grave without even realizing what he had done. His power was slowly consuming him, and William no longer knew whether Max was controlling the void or whether the void had begun controlling him.

After giving Max one final look, William turned around and rushed through the broken doorway.

The corridor outside had already begun falling apart. Pieces of white stone broke from the ceiling, forcing William to raise one scaled arm over his head as he pushed forward. Long cracks opened beneath his feet, while the enchanted lights along the walls dimmed one after another as their mana disappeared.

Several weakened guards and servants stumbled through the corridor ahead of him, some supporting one another while others had already collapsed. William did not stop to explain what was happening.

"Get out of the castle!" he shouted as he passed them. "Do not stop for anything!"

Another wave of void magic spread through the structure, causing the floor to shake violently beneath his feet. William caught himself against the wall and continued forward, only to notice someone lying several meters ahead.

Senuna rested near one of the damaged walls, partially covered by dust and small fragments of stone. Her eyes were barely open, trembling as she fought to regain consciousness, yet her weakened body refused to move.

Even in that state, she could feel the danger closing in around her.

"Lady Senuna!"

William rushed toward her and dropped to one knee. He brushed the pieces of stone from her clothes before slipping one arm beneath her back and the other beneath her legs, carefully lifting her into his arms.

Senuna’s head fell against his chest as he rose. Her face had become pale, and each breath escaped her lips weakly as the surrounding void continued draining what little mana remained within her body.

"What... is happening?" she whispered through her barely parted lips.

Her unfocused eyes moved toward the darkness spreading along the corridor behind them. Although she could no longer clearly see the man standing at its center, she recognized the overwhelming presence consuming everything around him.

"Is that... Maximus?"

William tightened his grip around her and began running again, shielding her body from the debris falling from above.

Senuna struggled to keep her eyes open as the castle shook around them. The disappearance of the surrounding mana made it almost impossible for her to remain conscious. Every trace of energy within the vicinity was being pulled toward Max until nothing remained for anyone else, not even the slightest amount that her body could absorb to sustain itself.

"Will he..." Senuna’s fingers weakly tightened around William’s damaged clothing. "Will he destroy my home?"

William’s expression hardened, but he could not give her the answer she wanted.

"If he does not stop," he said as another deep rumble travelled through the castle, "there may not be anything left."

Senuna’s eyes slowly closed again.

William accelerated, forcing the last of his available mana through his body as he carried her toward the nearest opening. The walls on either side of him cracked apart, and a section of the ceiling collapsed only moments after he passed beneath it.

He reached the end of the corridor just as the floor behind him began falling away. Without slowing down, William leaped through the shattered opening and spread his white wings, shooting out of the castle with Senuna held tightly against his chest.

Only after reaching the air did he see how far Max’s power had already spread.

Dark fractures crawled outward from the castle and tore through the surrounding streets. The brilliant white structures throughout the capital began trembling as the mana sustaining them was stripped away. Their enchanted surfaces shone one final time, releasing a faint white glow before the light vanished completely.

"Flee!" William roared toward the people below. "Everybody, flee!"

Citizens stopped in the streets and raised their heads, staring at the bloodied dragon hybrid carrying Senuna away from the collapsing castle.

"The capital is done for!" William shouted, forcing his voice across as much of the city as he could. "Leave everything behind and flee!"

Panic spread through the streets as the first of the white towers cracked down the center. Its upper section leaned toward the castle before breaking apart, followed by several surrounding buildings whose weakened foundations could no longer support them.

One after another, the magnificent white structures began collapsing inward, pulled toward the darkness spreading from the heart of the capital.

Toward Max, who remained inside the dying castle, still repeating the same words while his void devoured everything around him.

Those who survived watched as the city they cherished, the capital that had once given them hope, slowly disappeared into nothing. The brilliant white structures, crowded streets, and homes they had spent their entire lives building were gone, leaving behind only a vast emptiness where the capital had once stood.

Only a single man remained standing at its center, his eyes calmly fixed upon the distant horizon.

By now, Max had managed to calm himself slightly, and the void magic pouring from his body had finally receded. However, his heart remained an unstable mess, while foreign anger and violent thoughts continued moving through his mind.

"I’m not myself anymore..." Max muttered as he looked down at his hands. "I need to do something."

He looked back at William and Senuna, followed by the people he had left without homes. Every person stared at him with the same expression in their eyes.

Fear.

Even William watched him cautiously, still holding the barely conscious Senuna in his arms.

Max turned away from them and clenched his fists.

"You’re the one inside my head, aren’t you?" he asked.

Nothing replied. The voice inside his mind had fallen completely silent, as though it had never existed.

"I know it’s you, System Creator," Max continued, his voice growing colder. "I promise you, if you attempt to control me again, or feed me anger that I cannot control, I will make certain that you rot inside your prison once and for all."

The silence remained.

"I am not your servant, and you are not my master. If you want my help, then you will follow my rules and pay whatever price I consider worthy of my cooperation."

White scales spread across Max’s body as he transformed into his dragon-hybrid form. His wings unfolded behind him before driving downward and carrying him into the sky.

Max turned toward William, who remained hovering nearby with Senuna in his arms.

"Follow me," he said coldly.

Max never apologized to the people of Britana for destroying their home. He did not apologize to William for nearly killing him, nor did he offer Senuna a single word after taking everything away from her people.

He simply turned away and flew toward Voidstar, knowing that William would follow.
