The journey back to Voidstar passed in complete silence.
Max flew ahead without looking back, his large wings cutting through the air while the clouds parted around his body. The cold wind should have helped clear his mind, yet every beat of his void heart reminded him that something inside him remained unstable.
The power that should have filled him with joy continued moving through his veins like an endless current, waiting for another moment of weakness in which it could burst free. Yet even his resurrection had brought him neither joy nor hope. Instead, it made him feel as though he had lost something important.
He glanced down at his hands, watching the black scales covering his fingers shift whenever his claws tightened.
"How much of that anger was mine?" Max muttered to himself as the wind continued cutting across his face.
He could no longer tell whether he would have acted the same way before his death, but judging by how many people he had begun killing lately and the way he treated those around him, a clear pattern was beginning to form. He wondered whether the void heart had merely brought more of his true nature to the surface than he had ever known existed.
That was what disturbed Max the most.
However, he had to confirm it, and the best way to do so was to return home and witness his own feelings toward the people who depended on him and the women who loved him. More than anything, he feared that he had lost the love he had slowly begun building for them.
Behind him, William struggled to maintain the same speed. His wings moved unevenly, while the scales covering his body had lost much of their previous shine. He had already exhausted most of his mana while resisting Max’s void magic, and the additional weight of Senuna in his arms only made the journey more difficult.
Max noticed the growing distance between them.
He slowed down without saying anything.
William raised his purple eyes toward him, clearly understanding what Max had done, but neither man acknowledged it. Too much had happened for such a small gesture to repair anything between them.
Senuna shifted weakly within William’s arms.
Her eyelids trembled before slowly opening, revealing an unfocused gaze that moved across the clouds beneath them. The wind struck her face, causing her to draw in a sharp breath as she realized that she was no longer inside the castle.
"Where..." Her voice barely escaped her throat. "Where are you taking me?"
William looked down at her but continued flying.
"Voidstar."
Senuna remained silent for several seconds, struggling to remember what had happened. Her gaze eventually settled upon the black-scaled figure flying ahead of them.
"Maximus..."
The name left her lips with a mixture of confusion and fear as fragments of her memories gradually returned.
"My home..." Senuna whispered.
William’s jaw tightened.
She looked behind them, but the capital was already too far away to see. Nothing remained upon the distant horizon except a thin cloud of dust slowly spreading across the sky.
"What happened to my home?"
William did not answer immediately.
Senuna’s fingers weakly closed around the torn fabric covering his chest.
"Tell me."
"The capital is gone," William finally said.
Her expression did not change at first. She continued staring at him as though she had heard the words but could not understand their meaning.
"Gone?"
"Max..." William hesitated briefly. "I mean, King Maximus lost control of his power. His magic consumed the castle, and then it spread through the rest of the capital."
Senuna’s lips parted, yet no sound emerged.
She turned her head toward Max once again. He remained close enough to hear every word, but he did not look back.
"And my king?"
William’s wings faltered for a moment.
That small reaction was enough to answer her question.
Senuna’s face slowly lost what little color it still possessed. Her eyes remained fixed upon Max’s back as her breathing grew increasingly uneven.
"He killed him?"
"Yes."
The answer came without hesitation, and Max made no attempt to deny it.
Senuna lowered her gaze. She did not cry or scream, nor did she demand that William turn around. Her body simply became motionless within his arms as she tried to understand how quickly everything had been taken from her.
Caratacus had offered her to Max as part of an agreement. He had used her as a political tool and placed the future of Britana above anything she might have wanted for herself.
Yet Senuna had never resented the duty placed upon her. She was a duty-driven woman who had always been prepared to face whatever fate was placed upon her shoulders, even if that fate led to her death.
Now, all of it was gone. With the king dead and the people of the capital scattered, Senuna feared there might soon be no Britana left for her to return to.
Max increased his speed slightly as the dark outline of Blackspire appeared in the distance.
It did not take long for the first patrols to notice them.
Several young dragons were keeping watch in a state of high alert. News of their king’s death had spread across the entire region, and the four families had already begun fighting among themselves again, bringing Voidstar to the verge of collapse and separation, just as they had been before Max united them.
Even if that unification had been achieved through force, it was still one they had eventually accepted. Without Max himself or an offspring capable of taking control, there was no longer anyone holding Voidstar together.
"A couple of dragons are flying toward us at great speed. Does anyone know who was permitted to leave the capital and return today?" a young Wind Dragon asked.
He raised one hand to shield his eyes from the sun, but he still could not clearly distinguish the approaching figures. He could only see that one appeared to be covered in black scales, while the other was white and carrying someone in his arms.
"It could be William..." a middle-aged Ice Dragon replied.
There were very few Ice Dragons left, and only one of them was known to be outside the borders of Voidstar.
"Then who is the other one with him?" a young Thunder Dragon asked. "Black... black..."
His eyes suddenly widened as recognition struck him, shock and joy spreading across his face.
"King Maximus?!"
He shot into the air like a rocket, desperate to confirm his suspicions.
"What did he say? The king is alive?!"
The other dragons reacted immediately, rushing into the sky after him. If it was truly Max approaching the capital, an enormous weight would finally be lifted from their shoulders.
