Supreme Bloodline Evolution System
Chapter 240: I Don’t Need You, You Need Me.The city of Blackspire erupted in celebration. Word quickly spread that King Maximus had been falsely reported dead and had finally returned to them.
Max sat upon his throne, feeling the cold crystal structure beneath him. It constantly reminded him of Clotilde and her now-unknown fate. The only thing he knew for certain was that both she and the child growing inside her were still alive, as he had not lost access to her bloodline power.
Yet the moment of his defeat continued playing through his mind again and again. He constantly saw Clotilde rushing toward him and remembered trying to reach her, but no matter how desperately they tried, neither of them had been able to reach the other.
Pain was something Max could feel far more clearly than happiness at the moment. The regret of being too weak to protect Clotilde, along with the pain of causing so much worry to everyone who cared about him, continued feeding his desire for greater power.
However, he did not crave strength alone.
He also wanted the emotions the System Creator had taken away from him.
The distant celebration continued beyond the citadel, loud enough for the voices of his people to occasionally penetrate the walls around him. They shouted his name, celebrating the return of the king who had united them and built the city they now called home.
Every cheer should have filled him with pride.
Instead, the voices sounded distant, as though the people were celebrating someone else.
Max closed his eyes and deliberately pictured Rosalia and Agnia throwing themselves into his arms. He remembered their tears, the warmth of their bodies, and the faint smile that had appeared upon his lips when he held them. He then thought of Clotilde, the children growing within her and Agnia, and everyone else who had placed their trust in him.
Something weak stirred within his chest, but the pain remained far stronger.
At least that meant his feelings had not disappeared completely. They were still buried somewhere within him, even if he could barely reach them.
His heavy, exhausted eyes slowly drifted closed as sleep finally began to overtake him. Max had not rested once since returning to life. While his people celebrated, he had spent every moment thinking about how to ensure the safety of his kingdom.
With his current strength, there was no way for him to protect it from the enemies closing in around him.
Yet he also refused to continue following the path the System Creator had laid out for him.
Max felt his body floating in the air without anything supporting him. When he opened his eyes, he found nothing around him except endless darkness.
"Are you going to hide from me now?" he asked coldly.
His voice echoed into the distance, causing the entire realm to reverberate as though the darkness itself were responding to his demand.
"I am not."
This time, no enormous eyes opened to watch him. Max remained alone within the darkness, while the woman’s voice responded with a coldness that surpassed even his own.
Max wanted to laugh, but he could not. The desire was there, yet the emotion needed to produce it remained beyond his reach.
"I believe the two of us have begun meeting here far too often," he said, slowly turning his head as he searched the darkness around him. "Yet I cannot deny that I hope this will be the last time. After all, there is nothing else I need from you. I only want my old self back."
"I can’t do that. Even if I could, I wouldn’t."
Max’s jaw tightened.
"You expect me to become your puppet? You call yourself a creator, but you are nothing more than a fraud. This System and everything built around it are fake, nothing but a mask hiding your desire to control others. You wanted to create a tool that could serve as your personal weapon, but I refuse."
His hands slowly curled into fists at his sides.
"I will not aid you, so you had better get out of my head."
There was no anger in Max’s voice. His words emerged calmly, almost without emotion, which made the threat within them feel even more dangerous.
The System Creator remained silent for a long time. The dark realm trembled gently several times before her voice finally returned.
"It’s not me."
Max prepared to dismiss her denial, yet the memory of the voice he had heard in Britana prevented him from responding immediately.
It had sounded different.
The voice had been cruel, but beneath that cruelty, it had also sounded unstable and strangely rushed, as though it had been desperate to force Max into acting before something could stop it. The woman speaking to him now remained cold and measured, without any trace of the urgency he remembered.
That did not prove her innocence. She could easily be changing the way she spoke to confuse him, and Max had no reason to believe anything she said.
Still, the difference left behind enough doubt to disturb him.
"Not you?" Max rolled his eyes. "It sounds a lot like you. The voice rushes me, tempts me to kill, and constantly demands that I grow stronger. If that isn’t you inside my head, then what is it? Are you truly trying to tell me that it comes from some hidden part of myself?"
He opened one hand and stared at his palm, remembering the void magic that had consumed the capital of Britana.
"I may have always craved power, but I never cared about it enough to forsake the people I love."
"Then you don’t know yourself, Max."
"Don’t tell me what I know and what I don’t." Max raised his head, his expression hardening as he stared into the darkness. "At the very least, I know myself better than you do."
"And what of it?" the woman asked. "You were already doing the same things before your death. You killed, robbed, and forced others to love you. Isn’t that right? Isn’t that what you have always wanted within that rotten heart of yours?"
The darkness around Max seemed to draw closer as she continued.
"You wanted to be relevant. You wanted others to recognize you and fear losing you. You have wanted that ever since you were a child. That is why you killed that boy just to..."
"Enough."
The word left Max’s mouth with enough force to make the darkness tremble.
His fists tightened until his nails dug into his palms, while the calmness that had covered his face finally began cracking beneath the anger rising inside him.
"Who asked you to dig through my distant memories?"
"Truth hurts, doesn’t it?"
"Yeah," Max replied, his breathing growing heavier. "But what will feel incredibly good is finally getting rid of you when you die in whatever prison is holding you."
"Not if I take away your System first. Then you will die."
Silence followed her threat.
Max’s anger slowly disappeared from his face. He remained motionless for several moments before extending both arms into the darkness, leaving himself completely exposed.
"All right. Do it."
There was no fear in his voice.
"I would rather die than become anyone’s tool." Max spread his arms even farther. "Do it! I dare you to do it, because we both fucking know what will happen if I die."
The realm trembled again, but the woman did not answer.
"You will perish too," Max continued. "That is why you resurrected me and forced this void heart upon me. You need me to grow stronger, and you need it to happen quickly. Faster and faster, without allowing me to care about anything else."
His voice rose as he stared into the darkness, no longer caring whether she appeared before him.
"Even if I lost control and killed my own women or my own children, you wouldn’t even apologize. How far would you go just to live? You would go that far, wouldn’t you?"
Max waited, but the System Creator remained silent.
"So fuck off, suck a fat one, and kill me already, because I am done playing by your rules!"
His words echoed through the realm before gradually fading, leaving Max floating alone within the darkness.
He waited for a response.
None came.
"Fine, remain silent," Max said as he slowly lowered his arms. "After all, in this life, I don’t need you. You need me."
A cold smile formed upon his lips.
"So think carefully about who serves whom."
The silence continued.
Eventually, Max felt an external force wrapping around his body and dragging him out of the dark realm. The System Creator had decided to give him nothing except the cold shoulder, and Max accepted it.
From this moment onward, he would no longer play by her rules.
He swore that to himself.
When Max opened his eyes again, he found himself sitting upon his throne. His body was covered in cold sweat, while a sharp pain pulsed through both temples, forcing him to raise one hand and hold his head.
The muffled celebration remained audible beyond the walls. His people were still rejoicing over his return, unaware that their king had just challenged the power responsible for bringing him into their world.
"It’s time to come clean to those two..." he muttered.
His fingers pressed against his temple as he forced himself to sit upright.
"I don’t care if the System kills me. I need to become myself again, so there will be no more secrets, not even about the reason I came to this world."
Max slowly rose from the throne. His exhausted body protested against the movement, but he forced his legs to remain steady as he turned toward the exit.
Rosalia and Agnia deserved to know what had brought him into their lives, what the System had demanded from him, and what could happen if he continued opposing its creator.
He would no longer hide the truth behind the excuse of protecting them.
This time, they would decide whether they still wanted to remain beside him after learning who he truly was.
