The pressure surrounding Max’s void heart continued increasing until every beat became a struggle against the invisible force attempting to crush it. His vision blurred at the edges, and the strength in his body began to fade, yet he refused to lower his gaze or take back the words he had spoken.
If the System Creator wanted his obedience, then she would have to take it from his corpse.
A moment later, the pressure vanished.
Air flooded back into Max’s lungs as his void heart expanded violently inside his chest. He bent forward, coughing as his trembling arms struggled to support him, but Rosalia and Agnia caught him before he could fall from the bed and held him until his breathing slowly steadied.
The force had withdrawn, and Max felt as though one of the chains around him had finally begun to crack.
Rosalia’s fingers moved through his hair as she continued holding him against her. Her touch remained gentle, but the hand resting against his back trembled with an anger she was struggling to contain.
"She stopped," Max whispered.
"She?" Agnia repeated. "The creator you spoke of?"
"Yes."
Max slowly pushed himself upright, though Agnia kept one arm around him in case his strength failed again.
"She has controlled what I was allowed to know and say since I arrived in this world," Max explained. "At first, I thought the System was nothing more than a magical object giving me instructions and rewards, but it changed over time and began responding to me, while its creator continued watching from somewhere I could not reach."
"And you never thought to tell us?" Agnia asked.
"I tried when Rosalia and I first met, but the pain began the moment I spoke about my world, and I understood that certain truths were forbidden." Max looked down at his hands. "Later, I feared that speaking carelessly could place all of you in danger."
"You believed that keeping us ignorant would protect us," Rosalia said.
"Yes."
Rosalia’s fingers tightened around his hand as the gentleness left her face. "You carried this alone because you feared she would punish us, yet she nearly crushed your heart the moment you finally spoke. Whatever she believes herself to be, she has no right to do this to you."
"You believe me?"
"I saw what happened before my eyes," Rosalia answered. "How could I not?"
"I believe you as well," Agnia said, though her gaze remained fixed on Max. "But I need to understand something."
"Ask."
Agnia remained silent as her hand settled over her stomach, and Max immediately understood where her thoughts had gone.
"You said the System gave you the power that allowed you to become what you are." Her black eyes hardened as she forced herself to ask the question. "Did it also bring you to us?"
Max did not answer immediately.
Rosalia looked between them before her own hand unconsciously drifted toward the child growing inside her.
"What does our meeting have to do with the System?" she asked.
"The System searches for bloodlines compatible with mine," Max admitted. "It guides my evolution by helping me obtain and fuse those bloodlines. When Rosalia conceived my child, the System gave me the Ice Dragon Bloodline. When you conceived, it gave me the Fire Dragon Bloodline and fused the two together."
The warmth inside the chamber disappeared as Rosalia withdrew her hand and Agnia rose from the bed, anger and disbelief fighting across her face.
"So that is why you wanted me," Agnia said.
"No."
"You conquered my kingdom, took me as collateral, and eventually brought me into your bed, while this thing inside you promised a reward if I carried your child." Blue flames flickered across Agnia’s fingertips before she forced them back beneath her skin. "Do not tell me that had nothing to do with it."
"I won’t lie to you and claim the System played no part." Max remained seated, refusing to hide from the pain in her eyes. "It tempted me with the power of your bloodline, and I knew that having a child with you would make me stronger."
Agnia released a bitter laugh. "At least you are honest."
"But the System did not make me spare you when I conquered the Fire Dragon Kingdom. It did not force me to respect your pride, protect you from Aurelian, or choose you over the command ordering me to flee." Max met her gaze without hesitation. "It told me to abandon you and our child. I refused."
"That was your choice?" she asked, her body relaxing as her heart skipped a beat. "You... I..." She shook her head, struggling to gather her thoughts. "I know. That day, you almost died for me. I’m sorry."
Rosalia looked at him from beside the bed. "And what about me?"
"You were the first person in this world who treated me like a human being." Max turned toward her. "The System did not make you heal me, stand against your father, or remain beside me when my power destroyed Stonehollow. I wanted you before I knew that having a child with you would grant me anything."
Rosalia lowered her eyes, though the distance she had placed between them remained.
Agnia folded her arms beneath her chest. "And now?"
"What do you feel when you look at us now?" Agnia continued. "Not what you remember feeling or what you believe you are supposed to feel. When you look at Rosalia, at me and at the children growing inside us, do you feel anything at all?"
Max looked between Rosalia’s pale face and Agnia, who kept her head raised with the pride of a queen even as one hand protected her stomach.
"I don’t know," Max admitted.
Agnia’s expression cracked for only an instant before she turned her face away.
"I know that I love both of you," Max continued. "I remember wanting Rosalia so desperately that a single touch could make me lose control, and how Agnia’s defiance drove me insane. Those memories are still mine, but the emotions attached to them have become distant."
Rosalia’s tears finally escaped, though she quickly wiped them away.
"When I entered this room, I knew I should have felt relief, happiness, and desire, but there was almost nothing." Admitting it hurt more than the pressure that had nearly crushed his heart. "I would give up every bloodline and power the System granted me if it could return what was taken."
"Was it the Creator?" Rosalia asked.
"I believe she is responsible for changing me, but there may be something else involved as well. There is a voice inside me that urges me to kill and become something I refuse to be. The Creator claims that voice does not belong to her."
"And you believe her?" Agnia asked sharply.
"No." Max’s eyes darkened. "I no longer believe anything simply because she says it."
Agnia walked back toward the bed, though she did not sit. "What does she want from you?"
"She wants me to free her."
Rosalia’s expression changed. "She is imprisoned?"
"That is what she has shown me. She chose me because she needs something from me, although I still don’t know why I was the one pulled from my world or what she truly expects me to become." Max lifted his gaze toward the crystals above them. "She has power over the System and my body, but she cannot obtain her freedom without me. That is why she threatens me instead of simply erasing me."
For the first time since his confession began, something resembling hope appeared within Rosalia’s eyes.
"Then she needs you more than you need her."
"That is what I told her."
A faint smile touched Rosalia’s lips, though tears still stained her cheeks. She reached for Max’s hand again, and this time, she did not hesitate before wrapping her fingers around his.
"Then you are not as helpless before her as you believe."
Agnia finally sat beside him, though her movements remained stiff. "I am still furious with you."
"I know."
"I do not know whether I want to burn you, the System, or the woman who created it."
"You may have to wait until I figure out how to reach her."
Agnia glared at him, but a familiar spark returned to her eyes. "When you do, she had better pray that your feelings return before I meet her."
Max almost smiled. His lips did not quite obey him, yet both women noticed the small change in his face.
Rosalia leaned closer and rested her forehead against his. "You said you know that you love us, even if you cannot feel that love the way you once did."
"Yes."
"Then until you can feel it again, we will remember it for you."
Max closed his eyes as Rosalia wrapped her arms around him. Agnia remained still for a moment longer, her pride fighting against the fear and hurt inside her, but eventually, she leaned against his other side and placed her hand over his.
For the first time since the System Creator had taken something from him, Max no longer felt as though he had to face her alone.
