Chapter 245: The Heart That Could Swallow a Continent

Max looked over everyone gathered before him as their vows gave way to roars and cheers that shook the crystal walls of the throne room. More than anything, he wished he could feel his heart racing with the same pride and excitement shining across their faces.

Yet his void heart did not react.

The voices of his people reached him, and he understood the weight of what had just happened, but none of it awakened the emotions that should have been burning inside him. He had witnessed the beginning of a new age for Voidstar, yet the heart within his chest remained silent.

Max slowly closed his eyes and sank into meditation, allowing his endlessly hungry void heart to absorb a thin current of ambient mana from the air. He felt the energy entering his body before disappearing into its depths, leaving behind no warmth, satisfaction or sense of fullness. No matter how much the heart consumed, everything simply vanished as though swallowed by a true void.

The cheers gradually faded around him. Footsteps crossed the throne room as the gathered leaders departed to carry out their preparations, yet Max remained motionless upon the throne, barely noticing the hours passing as the kingdom around him grew silent.

When he finally opened his eyes, the chamber was empty.

Moonlight seeped through the crystal windows, casting brilliant streams of pale light across the darkened throne room. Max remained seated for a moment longer, surrounded by the empty space where the five leaders had sworn their loyalty only hours earlier.

"I need to make a trip to the Spirit Pond," he muttered to himself.

Max rose from the throne and crossed the silent citadel, making his way toward his chambers. He stopped before the massive doors for only a moment before quietly pushing them open.

Rosalia and Agnia were sleeping soundly inside, undisturbed by his return.

Max remained in the doorway, silently watching the two women as their bodies rose and fell with each peaceful breath. He knew what he should have felt upon seeing them safe beside one another, yet once again, only silence answered him.

He closed the door without waking them and left the citadel.

Once outside, Max transformed into his dragon hybrid form, horns emerging from his head as powerful wings unfolded behind his back. A single beat launched him into the night, and moments later, Blackspire had already begun to disappear behind him.

His wings carried him through the darkened sky at a speed he had never reached before. Whatever had happened to his emotions, his body had become extraordinarily compatible with the void heart’s power, making him faster, stronger and far more capable of controlling his abilities than ever before.

The air tore past his scales as he flew beneath the moon, yet he barely felt any strain no matter how much speed he forced from his wings. It was as though the void heart had stripped away the limits his old body once possessed, rebuilding him into something better suited to containing its endless hunger.

It took him little time to reach the borders of the elven forest. Soon after, accompanied only by moonlight passing through the branches above, Max descended beside the sparkling pond.

The water remained peaceful before him, its surface reflecting the stars as though another night sky existed beneath his feet. Max walked slowly into the pond, feeling the cold water rise around his body until the realm began to swallow him.

The familiar mist welcomed him, surrounding his entire body before carrying him through the spiritual world and into the Spirit Sovereign’s citadel.

Max found himself standing inside the ancient chamber once more. He approached the familiar throne and sat down, the structure responding to his presence as the spirit women began gathering around him.

One after another, they lowered themselves to their knees.

"My Sovereign, you have returned to us." Saelunith smiled as she approached the throne, her otherworldly eyes studying Max. "What brings you here?"

Her smile vanished almost immediately.

Alarm replaced the calmness within her eyes as she sensed something wrong inside his body.

"My Sovereign, you are injured. Your heart..."

Saelunith rushed toward him before finishing her sentence, while the other spirit women rose from their knees and gathered around the throne. Their gazes moved across Max as they attempted to understand the unfamiliar power now resting inside him.

"Your heart..." Saelunith whispered. "What is this evil inside it? How did this happen?"

"It is a long story." Max reached for her soft hand and pressed her palm against his chest, allowing her to examine the void heart more closely. "I died and was resurrected by this."

Saelunith closed her eyes as her senses moved deeper. The moment they approached his heart, her body stiffened, and her fingers trembled against his chest.

"Such unstable power..." Her eyes opened as she looked at him gravely. "My Sovereign, this is not safe. This heart does not merely contain void power. It behaves as though a true void has formed within your body, endlessly consuming everything that enters it."

The other spirit women exchanged frightened glances, but Max remained unmoved.

"What happens if it loses control?" he asked.

"If this power ever goes berserk, you will not be its only victim." Saelunith slowly withdrew her senses, though Max continued holding her hand against his chest. "It could swallow everything around you, spreading farther with every source of mana it consumes. If allowed to grow without restraint, the entire continent could disappear into the void."

"Is that so?" Max raised an eyebrow, showing little concern for the danger she described. "Does that mean it possesses enough potential to grant me the power needed to defeat the Imperial Court Emperor?"

Saelunith stared at him, disturbed by how quickly he had turned her warning into a question about strength.

"How powerful is this emperor?" she asked.

"He killed me with one finger." Max’s voice remained calm, as though he were describing the death of someone else. "I could not understand his power or determine his realm. The difference between us was so great that I doubt my magic alone can compensate for it."

"One finger..." Saelunith repeated, falling silent as she considered what kind of being could kill Max so easily.
